Hey, at least they won't give you babies aside from what's already pregnant! Plus, that's a lot of militia fodder.

I think this was in response to the 'set population cap to 35, migration filled the fort up to 66' post: population cap doesn't affect births at all, it only governs migration. The only thing that affects in-fortress pregnancies is the child cap. If over sixty dwarfs are above your capacity, you better set the child cap to ten or less, to avoid further pregnancies.

True, in my fort I actually set the child cap to 10% of the population, which seems okay for my purposes.

Amazing news for Impaledwomen!

Despite the hopeless nature of the berserk dragon woman who never bore child, the other dragon woman I neglected to train to keep her sane did give birth when next permitted out of her cage! To no less than four offspring!

In other good news, some militia have been sparring, and work progresses slowly on getting the entire fortress engraved. The vampire apparently didn't manage to kill anyone while wandering the halls, but I didn't want to risk a repeat of the tragedy of my expedition leader so while I contemplate where I might send her now that the king has her villa, I locked her in the hospital cell she was placed in.

Enemy activity has been light, permitting us to get a lot of work done recently.

Also, despite my initial and justifiable horror at having received the king within my stronghold, the king has so far remained perfectly reasonable. All he asks for are slabs and splints, he hasn't wined about anybody having rooms above their station, and he's been pretty mellow, chatting with the dwarves in the dining hall and employing himself as a weaver.

I completely dropped the ball with making crafts, so I had to trade a giant piece of chert for five plump helmet seeds. The entire rest of the time I stared at all the seeds that I needed to make something other than bloody plump helmets, but couldn't trade for because I barely had enough chert boulders to cover the cost of one seed pack.
ahahahahaha.

I had a recent cave-in that sent one of my +5 miners to the hospital for like the umpteenth time (only 3 deaths from over a dozen cave-ins in 6 years! dwarf medicine is awesome).  Unfortunately this time he broke BOTH his arms, so it looks like he'll be bedridden until his bones heal (they do heal, and there's no diagnosed nerve damage).  Also, I had about 5 eagles hatch and they immediately started running around killing vermin (i gave them dive_hunts_vermin).  They also apparently treat all floors as ramps even though they don't truly fly.  I watched a giant Olm stare at my cage traps for about 3 minutes, running forward, then backing off.  Right when he was about to get caged, one of my militia saw him and bashed its skull in.  I really wanted that giant olm.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ah, the wonders of Dwarf flight.

The digging continues, the last bits are to be hollowed out before the magma sea will be allowed to rush in. A blue newt of fire has shown up, it's breaking its way through doors to reach the Dwarves digging on the other side of the Quarry. If it continues taking the stupid path it's going to go through 8 doors, more than enough time to finish off digging another layer.

i got an one eyed weevil forgotten beast with poisonous bite attacking my fort. naturally not a challenge when you have a full squad of elite marksdwarves. one ended up killing it with a headshot, which was really surprising for me. usually when goblins attack, my squad takes forever to kill them. they always hit the legs or other non lethal areas. i saw the beast move towards a hail of bolts and suddenly drop dead.

i was originally planning to capture it using a web trap, but we didn't haul the spider fast enough. I'm a sad overseer now.

Welll a second necro siege was broken up by 5 goblin ambushes, with both necromancers being KIA. Thankfully the traders were already at the northern end of the map, inside the depot (but no walls!) and as soon as the siege was lifted I sent my military out to greet the visitors.

The southern end is finally totally sealed by raising bridges, forcing everything into two easy to manage posts. These corners will eventually be the main towers of the fort, but for now we are suffering a severe lack of labor. The military is training full time, in order to be skilled enough to be given a squad of their own and train the raw meat into hardened, battle-ready dwarves, and will eventually have a month off here and there to contribute a little to an art of their choosing.

For now, I must see the diplomat off, and give orders to send more migrants. 32 dwarves, 13 full time military, 8 children, and 11 adults aren't nearly enough to keep building at the pace required.

Mayor's husband just went berserk when he couldn't get the materials he wanted for his artifact bow, earning himself a bronze bolt through the head.  The only dwarf who seems to care is the baby.

Meanwhile, the mayor is getting slightly irritated that her mandates are being ignored.

Watermined - Year 3

Experiment with boulder-loaded "coinstar" trap a semi-success.  (And yes, there is a shut-off switch.)  The trapped section of tunnel collected five goblin corpses, a selection of goblin clothing, and also more weapons than five goblins would carry.  So presumably an ambush team or two got pounded on and left with wounded.  The trap is being expanded to be longer to see if that helps efficiency.  Might also watch the repeater (mine cart on a loop using an impulse ramp) since I watch the retracting bridges and periodically there is a  "lull" where no bridges are triggering for an extended period of time.  Oh, and since I have a dozen pressure pads in place I have also started hooking them up to an array of menacing spikes sitting on a likely approach path.

Population has topped out at 65 dwarves and about a dozen babies/children.  Housing is about complete, and the dining room, hospital and cistern are operational.  The aquifer level supplied water for the cistern, and also power for a mist generator in the dining room entrance area.

Magma was found and enough carted up to get some magma smelters and forges going.  So the iron ore can now be converted more easily into useful forms.  Trade has gotten easier as well with the discovery of native gold veins in two areas.  Fortress wealth is increasing, which should draw heavier goblin interest soon.

Food and booze supplies are good with trade and operational farm plots.  Main limitation on booze supply is containers.  Might be time to have the craftsdwarves start making stone pots. (Using purchased barrels and glass pots so far.)  Meat supply currently is mainly forgotten beast from a fire-shooting tortoise found in the caverns.  Luckily no casualties in bringing it down.

Next step is converting the collection of happy and partying idle dwarves into a trained militia.  Clothing, shields, and weapons have been accumulating in the armory -- time to start using them and the teaching ability of the veterans who migrated in.

An oddity was the first mayor losing an election -- to his wife.  All I had to do was assign her the office since the dining and bed rooms were already jointly owned.

Only have 67 dwarves... but I'm in serious need of dedicated haulers, so I might let a couple dozen in.

I'm thinking of making a golden pyramid(with silver floors).  Something to draw in invaders, fill it with an Indiana Jones style dungeon gauntlet, some axe traps, a minecart shotgun loaded with Giant steel spiked balls, a magma cistern, and drainage ditch, a shooting gallery for my Marksdwarves and at the top my Vampire who's currently smoothing out his hidy hole, and pulling a lever infinitely in seclusion.  Wall him in with Platinum gates to be "rescued"  by goblins.  And give him so levers to pull, while he cackles like a mall goth girl who's watched the Wizard of Oz one to many times.

Watermined - Year 3

 :-\ (Duplicate post)

Will instead use space to indicate that I'm going to study the repeater and coinstar trap interaction.  Will publish if I notice anything useful or a fairly simple design that makes these things easier to set-up.  Though I note that putting it 1 Z-level down and having all that area covered by the retracting bridges appears to keep all the objects on the bridges - nothing has bounced out upward yet.  And leaving a non-bridge spot on the level with the bridges will eventually start accumulating items.

4 legendary axedwarves, 2 each legendary spear, sword, mace and hammer dwarves, with legendary shield user and proficient armor and dodger skills totally decimated 6 ambush squads that tried to invade, and suffered no losses at all, even though several of them are females with children in tow. A marksdwarf is somewhere in there, but not nearly as skilled as the others since he's not been paired with anyone yet and has very little opportunity to practice. He killed a few, but has been more of a help against zombies than anything.

Good thing they will be training the military soon enough, when migrants finally decide to show up.

Well i have found mummies in masterwork are not opposed to life as I hoped. I now have a death pit containing a dark strangler and a goblin with two mummies with no death going on. Oh and a swordsdwarf got torn in half by a giant mole that is now being disassembled into its component meaty bits.
