Nice site. Felled trees. Dug cave. Made civilization. Dreamhaze drifts. Dreamhaze steals the breath of dwarves. Dwarves die. Dreamhaze drifts yet again. Haze triggers insanity instead of killing. Two sides, loyalties broken. Turret gains a title. Life goes on.

...and then everything went to hell. Dreamhaze struck the majority of my civilization, triggering a berserk spiral, and lots of dead dwarves. Which then triggered proper tantrum spirals. Berserk dwarves awaken from confusion. Dwarves get head chopped off. End of story.

Succinctness is.

On my third attempt in the past several days to make a semi-successful fort without looking at the wiki or using the LNP pre-arranged parties, I tried creating a nice perfect matrix of 3x3 workshops. When over half the area designated to be mined out turned out to be damp stone, I simply dug a path from the aquifer out the side of the mountain into the overworld. Not the most elegant waterfall, but it adds some kind of unique touch to my fort.

I've decided to turn invaders back off on my 'Treasures in the desert' fort (fairly mineral-rich world, so of course i got coal and hematite and garnierite and kaolinite and shallow lava. But no trees on the surface, for what little that's worth).
It wasn't a challenge - put up some traps, turtle between the tenth of 'late <season>' and the tenth of 'early <season>', then collect prisoners and items. Except i was playing this with a pop_cap of ten, so no migrants past the first two waves. I had to disable all military training and the meeting hall just so the mountainous work backlog wouldn't bury them, but the gobbos keep bringing way more stuff than my midgets can clear out in the two months per season during which going outside isn't suicide.

With the watermark of 120 dead invaders and 25 prisoners (at sixteen adult dwarfs), i decided that this isn't fun. This isn't even dwarf fortress, this is Extreme Goblin Cleanup. Sorry invaders, off you go again.

But it was at least interesting to get to know you. I now know for certain that escaped ambushers _can_ show up in later ambushes. A bowgoblin squad was led by a human pikeman who upon entering the map dropped a glove and shoe - she was missing an arm and a leg, both of which were in fact sitting in my refuse stockpile, since she'd lost them in an earlier visit.

Carnagecorners lived up to it's name. The wagon embarked right next to a Conga of giant badgers who merrily slaughtered everyone before they'd had time to dig.
Distantmansions is showing a little more promise. - Magma tube in the first cavern, loads of different ores (half the map covers a separate plate), sand, rock crystals, and a thick layer of marble.

Fairly calm in my 23a fortress. Reached magma, and I have iron and coal, so I'm making some steel bars to get magma fueled smelting and such underway, to minimize my fuel use. I would like to get a bookkeeper, need to mint the coins though and I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Lost a miner to a magma man, but that problem was quickly put-down by a pair of marksdwarves before it could kill anyone else.

The first migrant wave hasn't arrived yet, and productivity has slowed to a crawl as my useful dwarves are forced to drag their own materials and products everywhere. When summer came, the space that I had planned to use as a farm flooded (good job not building those walls, Urist McPopulation) so I've had to make do with a 4x4 space near the fort's entrance. In a stunning display of brutality, a wolverine clawed a horse right through the heart. Overall, things are okay.

Modded creeping gas that either berserks victims or stuns them via sleep. Although I'm not too sure why it kills things, but I've decided to keep it anyway. :P

Just messed up the positioning of my magma channels, basically screwing up the layout of my fort...
Now I just wanna start over.

Damn my OCD.

Scratch that. Floors and channels saved my layout and magma stuff is now up.

Now I'm out of goals for my fortress.... There's some caverns out there, although I'm unsure what I want with them.

I also found some candy some ten floors down, that could be an interesting long-term plan?

It's been a few years [or at least 1, not so sure how much time since the magma sea was discovered in Silentthunders] and a nice portion of the subterranean complex has grown, what with the second tunnel being built and all.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

THE FORGES GROW!
No rampaging fire imps, no magma crabs, only one cave in and a slightly singed pig. Very soon I'll be growing my own obsidian.

The defeat of the mud crocodile by trees however will probably take the cake. Tunnels are already being built to harness this muddy adversary.

Now that I've actually gotten far enough to make traps, I realize that I've screwed up my fortress planning: the living areas and workshops are pretty much right next to the entrance on the same z-level. No room to place traps, no room for military. I'll have to slowly dismantle and rearrange the entire shebang, moving the living areas downstairs and putting more defenses up top. And of course my skilled carpenters will be tied up with removing workshops while eight or more useless haulers look on, eating plump helmets faster than my farmers can replant them.
