my fort got kind of boring by now =T
the wildlife isn't agressive, I got all the food and drinks to feed my 240 dwarves, who aren't complaining much
plus the fortress is completely apart from the outside world, as I've built walls around it..
that makes sieges and ambushes easy to deal with

really thinking of abandoning it and starting again in a more difficult environment..

The city of swamphandles is a military-focused fortress. My fortress entrance is through my primary sworddwarfs' barracks, which is adjacent (via fortifications) to my primary marksdwarf barracks, and a hammerdwarf barracks.

There's magnetite, bituminous coal, limestone, and lignite. So no problem getting steel. :)

I've had a couple ambushes by by third year. Neither one made it to my fortress, as the first time I rushed above to try and save a jeweler that was roaming about, and the second time after carefully burrowing my civilians and issuing orders for my military to wait for the invaders to enter... I find one of my sworddwarves wanted to engage the enemy instead. So I rush forward, wipe out a few squads. Turns out the idiot was the leader of my primary squad. He was a teacher with my best armor user skill (although it wasn't great). :(
___

I got a forgotten beast in the first cavern; I wasn't sure if I should be afraid or not! It was a blob made of grime and filth. Well, I had been setting up my secondary marksdwarf barracks to overlook my planned entrance into the caverns, so I decided to let them take some shots at it once it was set up.

I hear a combat report... that must be it! I zoom to look -- it's dead already. A single wooden crossbow bolt. I guess blobs of grime and filth aren't beasts to be afraid of!
___

I went to explore the depths, and I unfortunately missed a chance to get a rather interesting report. It would have gone:

  • You have discovered an expansive cavern deep underground.
  • Raw adamantine! Praise the miners!
As cool as that would have been, I can't complain that I found the magma sea first, as I know the spire is already solid that far down.

I should count my blessings; the third cavern could have been a lake which would have promptly flooded my lovely adamantine spire!

One of these days I'll remember to go cavern hunting *before* I start settling the magma sea.
___

Incidentally, there are gold veins adjacent to my adamantine spires (they're also all over the edge of the magma sea). I assume adamantine overrides gold? Or are the gold veins eating away my adamantine?  :'(

I got to my first adamantine spire.
Being excited, I decided to mine all the adamantine possible.
And then everyone died.

My human village has a nasty problem with monster attacks. A farmer armed with a wooden shield had his leg ripped apart by a badger before his squadmates killed it. They aren't taking him to the hospital and he refuses to sleep. I know it's a glitch but I noticed one of the founders has a grudge against his wife.

The narrative I've constructed is thus,

Das Wraithlikeskunk is badly wounded in battle. His peers realizing that he's not going to survive leave him. When they return to collect his body they find he's still very much alive. But the founder remembers the transgressions of his vile wife and informs them that he isn't worth saving. They build a small hut around him and set up a cage trap at it's entrance leaving him no way to defend himself or escape. All he can do is scream, scream in helpless agony as his untreated wounds fester drawing in hungry beasts from the deep woods. They bring him food and water daily but his wife has no idea that somewhere in the deepwood her husband screams sleeplessly and helplessly acting as bait in a sadistic trap.

Also, my subconsciousness seems to become more dwarven again...
Whenever the elven caravans arrive, my wood runs out, and I have to get new wood from the surface (at least atm from the surface)

One of my Dorfs just made an artefact table from Milk Quartz which has an image of itself on it. Should go well in a nobles office.

Kadoledem, "Hatchetkeys", a Milk Quartz Table. 24000 Dorfbucks.

This is a milk quartz table. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with emerald cut milk quartzes and encircled with bands of octagon cut milk quartzes and pig tail fiber. This object menaces with spikes of iron. On the item is an image of Hatchetkeys the milk quartz table in milk quartz.

It's a dwarf.  Their natural habitat is "trapped on the wrong side of a wall".

Flinging children halfway across the map to land in magma is good, wholesome fun, but extramarital reproduction?  Why, that's just unseemly!

Operation "Happy Fun Bloody Water Time" is about to begin.  My vampiric bookkeeper is in his tank with all levers primed for bloodletting.  Booze has been forbidden and the well will be used shortly.  Hopefully my bookkeeper doesn't die because he's the best I've got.  Non-lethal things are not my strong point.  Food production needs to be converted to cloth production, as increasing the value of the fort will increase the number of tasty tasty snacks available.

In other news, Operation "Tasty Tasty Snacks" is well underway, with plenty of doors requested and the bedrooms almost complete.

In other other news, Operation "Happy Fun Slashy Time" is sufficient for a small force, but a siege will cause jamming before the appropriate number of giblets are created.

Cleaning up two back to back forts, picking out the bits of goblin and troll stuck in my traps. Just as the pointy ear diplomat arrives, the goblin crossbowmen take up post outside my gate.... Shame.

Had a mood in my evil embark. The following is a transcript of what followed.

Dwarf Command: Okay Urist there's a fresh cut log right outside the gate. Just run outside, grab it, and run back in.

Urist: But there are Zombies outside.

DC: No it's okay, we have ten marksdwarves on the roof they're going to kill anything that comes near you.

Urist: Oh, okay.

DC: So just run out, grab the log, and run back in. That's it. Now, you may see a zombie or two don't panic. Because again, there are marksdwarves on the roof and they will kill the zombies if they come near you.

Urist: Okay.

DC: Alright, now above all else don't run into the forest. If you get scared just stand closer to the entrance so the archers can get a better shot.

Urist: Okay.

DC: Good, because the woods are lousy with zombies. If you run in any direction except towards the log or towards the fortress you are running directly towards zombies.

Urist: I get it!

DC: Excellent, now just fetch the log and don't run into the forest.

Urist: Stop reminding me!

DC: Okay, gates open.

Urist: Oh no zombie!

DC: Just let the archers handle it.

Urist: It's getting closer!

DC: Grab the log.

Urist: I'll run into the forest to escape!

DC: No just grab the log.

Urist: No, I'll run into the forest then get the log.

DC: If you're scared just come back to the fortress and we'll try again.

Urist: I'll just run into the forest it'll be quicker.

DC: Don't run into the forest.

Urist: I'm running into the forest.

DC: Don't run into the forest!

Urist: I'm in the forest.

As Urist tries to escape the zombie by running towards other zombies a second dwarf calmly walks outside, grabs the log, comes back inside, and locks the door behind him.

Another Dorf under the age of four's in a strange mood. Awesome, I get legendary child labour!

...Unless its skills all rust.

Zombie bacon production shall resume as normal.

Well this was quite awesome... new embark, nice location on a lake with a few cliffs and awesome defensive possibilities... All the stuff is still sitting in the wagon, because I've been trying to terraform the site a little before really committing to digging much.

A rhesus macaque troop decided my food and drink were an easy target for a quick raid... little did they know my dwarves were ready for them. Managed to kill all but 1 of a 10-monkey squad with wrestlers.

Kind of looked like one of those Three Stooges chases, but with more eye-gouging and brain-punching than normal.

At least we now have meat, bones, and skins for a while!

I think so, but there is supposed to be some cap that they cannot rust below to.
