A forgotten beast showed up in the third cavern level and tried to invade the fort through an unsecured hatch in the main stairwell. A passing marksdwarf shot it in the head, while a novice speardwarf stabbed at it. It has been processed into its constituent parts for consumption.

New migrants, new recruits. The axe and spear squads grow by leaps and bounds, now totaling 27 assorted ranged and melee troops. That is just over a quarter of our population, and should provide a decent enough defense.

The fire-breathing forgotten beast we caught years ago has been placed inside its own enclosure, overlooking the entrance hall. A floodgate controls its line of sight through fortifications, and the hope is it will be a functional defense mechanism with minimal maintenance required.

The first candy spire has been chipped into, and sealed in to prevent any more incursions from beasts. So far it is hollow, so we will continue digging carefully and hope for the best.

Plans are being made to improve the quality of life in the caverns, with mist generators and other such fancy stuff being built soon.

Still no sieges, and we haven't seen an ambush squad for several seasons now.

Things are going a little more smoothly into Numonol than before, since a critical goblin siege led by a demon and dozens war cave dragon killed my two best warriors on the battlefield, leaving only poorly skilled survivors in my military. The dining hall, for example, still needs some improvements (light from the above, illuminating the statues) but is almost finished. I'm also a little hesitant about the layout of the arena (more specifically, its battlefield) : sand soil with some weapon traps randomly hidden here and there, with an elevated adamantine statue on the middle of a magma square ? Or some twisted dodge-and-fall-into-magma pathways ?

One more in a long list of casualties while im trying to figure out minecarts... again. !FUN!

I think I am gonna try to train a doctor.

A few recruits were injured in the spring ambushes, and apparently think they are so badass that they don't need their broken bones seen to by the doctors. A well stocked hospital and experienced and knowledgeable trained medical personnel are on standby.

Just had a siege wiped out by a disturbing number of large serrated copper blade traps at the foot of my bridge into the side of my volcano. I'm now doing clean-up and killing some dralthas as they're putting a surprisingly big dent in my cavern harvesting dorfs.

I started a little vetting program where my propsective militia commanders fight a captured goblin in hand to hand combat before they get confirmed. My latest candidate grabbed the goblin and somehow threw it into herself. Her five children flew away from her in all directions like a blast from some sort of baby shotgun or shrapnel from some baby based bomb, one of them actually struck a nearby worker inflicting damage.

I think I just invented the most awesome and least ethical dwarf portable superweapon ever.

After a little more than a year, a giant turned up at my newest fort. The military was just some unarmed recruits and there was no locking mechanism for the entrance.
With about 20 dogs, we managed to bring the giant to the ground. It's now bleeding from everywhere, unconscious and basically just lying in the middle of the entrance with 10 recruits and the remaining dogs trying to kill it rather unsuccessfully. There's a lot of "The dog shakes the giant around by the head" and "The recruit punches the giant in the head, bruising [...]". Though it is somewhat comical to imagine the situation, I'd prefer if someone would just strangle that thing.

The whole fort currently grinds to a halt as about half the population is outside, trying to get in and the other half inside, trying to get out, permanently being interrupted by an almost dead giant. I really don't know whether to laugh or to cry.

I'm playing a map which is about 75% good biome and 25% evil biome. No undead yet, but I keep getting combat report spam when flying creatures get caught in the paralysing fetid mucus that rains to the east and drop to the floor.

I have a dwarven baby in the fortress called Etur Basementcats. He narrowly avoided being snatched by a goblin, so his mother is now ordered to remain in the fort and keep him safe.

Poetjudged is in the midst of its first siege. The goblins have parked themselves on a nearby hill to observe our fort-like entrance (hehe  :P), a small troop of spear goblins led by a lasher on a giant croc. (He and his croc seem content to splash in a pond rather than attack) Three squads of two held are in reserve should they attempt to test our defenses, they're trained soldiers but unbloodied having seen no established invasion force. All of them clad in steel, wielding steel. I believe we shall hold fine.

Other than that the first two years have been uneventful. Established a steel production, and everything else kind of fell into place around it. Things are well here, send more dwarves.

(After some searching this seems to be like the closest thing to a intro thread. Huh.)
So while this is not my first fortress is is one that I have gotten the furthest in.(New to DF, previous forts I ragequitted sort of becase DF) I have a layout I can stand, I've got lots of constructions,  I survived my first artifact incident (A child....Thank God for the wiki, I thought it could only occur for workshops I already had.) And Industrialization is coming along okay. I'll be diverting some of the river to fill out underground farms and then seal up.

I have laughable defences But supposing a siege, some might live. (My fort is a series of windings with siege engines at corners)  I have 24 Dwarves, but sooooo many children(10).

However....Thieves and Snatchers have started showing up and because of that my legendary miner now lays on a table bleeding out with a broken ...foot? leg? I figured that the massive skill of the pick would keep him safe when drafted to deal with these fiends...no go. Now I have this dwarf who will likely bleed out because I have no hospital setup. And I don't think I have any cloth, No soap, Nearest water is stagnant stuff most likely Unless the river counts.. My medical supplies include a splint and crutch. Poor Miner....I didnt think he'd end up like that. Oh well.
First of the seven to die, most likely. Or at least soon to be most useless.

Welcome to the glory of Dorfdom, Zero.
That McUrist family is getting rather prolific...

Recently in my fortress, I had a newly-arrived armourer make an artifact bronze boot. Now I have a legendary armourer to work the bronze. Still, the only materials I've found thus far are tetrahedrite, which leaves much to desire in both weapon and armor quality, and some deep metal, which is simply in short supply.

No invaders yet, but the militia will be ready for them when they do come. Maybe. Hopefully...

The fortress in general is more or less just a hole in the ground. Only two workshop areas, no permanent stockpiles, six lonely tables, and six lonely beds. The population is up to 43, so this simply won't do.

My fortress is progressing more rapidly now. The tetrahedrite has been converted into copper, which has been converted into crossbows, picks, shields, and bolts. The ranger squad is now well enough armed to consider viable as a defense force, and they have walls form which to fire. I have begun construction of a rudimentary trap hallway, which will currently only involve draw bridges to crush some intruders, followed by cage and weapon traps to deal with any who make it through.

One of the migrant weaponsmiths went moody and made for us a wonderful bronze battleaxe, which will now serve Spearson the axedwarf for the remainder of his career. You can't do too much better than bronze as far as axes go. Adamantine cuts better, yes, but lacks the punch when it comes to slapping opponents with the sides of the blade or hilt.

There was, unfortunately, a death incurred by a vampire, who I have locked away in his own little world. I am already formulating many schemes to subject him to. For now, though, he will make himself some furniture so he can work as our bookkeeper and manager.

Sino Pleatedscalded the Pink found his way within the boundaries of my Fortress.

It all began with the bee mood,
Edem's bees stung far and wide,
As Edem collected for his strange construction.

THE BEES! They saw a new contender!
A BOOK! S-I-N-O   P-L-E-A-T-E-D-S-C-A-L-D-E-D
Only one person could be writing this!
A sworn enemy! A HUMAN NECROMANCER!

And so with the mighty power of the artifacts screen & shift_F8,
The rough location was found of the Necromancer.

The pleated stakes were at the ready.
The sacrificial constructs were at the ready.
The blockaded spines were at the ready.
The mountainous intensity were at the ready.

Crossbows, warhammers, spears and battle axes.

Legendary wielders of the greatest forged wonders, they walked the bloody road to where the bees sang. Nothing to be seen.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Waiting for two days in the rain, patrolling the palisade for sight of the foul infiltrator. It seemed he had evaded their vigil.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh wait, he was inside the palisade all along. Good thing I had every single entrance from above to below covered with armoured sentinels.

13 legendary Dwarves against one human Necromancer.

Who will win?
