Mine out and retreat into an under-fortress. From there, make the entire upper section of the fort a set of cave-in traps and weapon traps.

Well, let's say, the dwarfes tried their best.
The magma trap set the whole map on fire, killing the necromancers.

My militia fought hard, and killed a great number of them, but did fall at the end.
At least, they gave me time to enable the doomsday device.
If I can't get the fortress, nobody will.

Let's hope, the reclaimers won't fail.

Just lost the same fort for the third time.  I have reclaimed.

This time, I had sufficient food, and was able to repair most of the damage to the flood trap.  I had expanded quarters, built extensive catacombs, figured out I had to unforbid and reclaim all the body parts to address the ghost problem.  I expanded the great hall, and arranged to have every inch smoothed and engraved.  I expanded the farms to avoid the previous "starving to death" problem that made the second reclaim so much fun.

I bought and brought weapons and armour, to help stave off the potential fun of a goblins raid or siege (the demise of my first fort).  I had approximately forty militia members out of 100 residents.  I dug down to a lovely magma pipe, and even killed off two forgotten beasts.  I survived a couple of nascent tantrum spiral, one of which ended with a murder, adn legendary war hammer made from a dwarven leg bone, and an inexplicably cheerful craftsdwarf.

The only oddity was the large number of goblins and trolls hanging about.  These were the remains fo the last successful assault on the previous fort.  These denizens of the area were listed as "friendly", and were easier to work around.  My expansion plans worked around these harmless creatures, and they simply became part of the scenery.

Then came the first siege.  With forty trained militia men and a trapped entrance, I was not worried.  I called in my citizens to the burrows, and activated the squads.

The formerly friendly trolls and goblins went bat-shit insane.  I suddently received a series of cancelled jobs, and an influx of deaths.  Assuming dwarves were not seeking the burrows, I sent two squads outside to protect the dwarves.  On closer examination, I determined that the burrow was not as teaming as it used to be.  In fact, the number of dwarves dropped from 100 to 80 in short order.  Sealing off the fortress, I attempted to take out the fifth column of goblins and trolls, unsuccessfully.  In the end, my military was left in tatters, I had less than 40 dwarves left, and most of those were tantruming.

Once again, I was forced to abandon.  I have reclaimed for the fourth time.

I just lost a farmer to a drawbridge opening.

More specifically, drawbridge throws a silver maul, farmer gets whacked by silver maul in the head 2 z-levels upwards , instant kill.

Well, that may be a good idea for drawbridge catapults... or shotguns, for that matter. I mean, while range and possibly power should generally be inferior to minecart railguns, infinite number of items and simplicity makes it interesting.

After retiring an adventurer, I have decided using a non-canon version of the spearbreakers world to build a new fort (The original falling to a catastrophic tantrum spiral that claimed 105 of 117 dwarves lives) named Greaterspear. In fine tradition of the dwarves of The Responsible Outrageous Fences, pikedwarves and giant war emu form the backbone of the fortress defense. I have hopes that Colonel Fischer Strifefulrope, The Blanketed Convent, Commander-Champion of Spearbreakers, will arrive with her entourage of fellow heroes who survived. Because they'll shpow up already geared in the best dwarven metalworking could provide and end up a disc-one nuke of sorts (Because fuck you goblins, she eats your kind for breakfast.)

But for now, Greaterspear has struck the earth, aiming to tame the untamed wilds to Spearbreakers' west.

EDIT: So I got some survivors, among them Dauros, the Old Legend (His ingame title plus nick of course.) Either I made training pikes too effective or he's nightmarishly strong as he has disemboweled a coati and stabbed two mosquito men to death.

After 3 seasons, we've done it. We're officially cutoff from the mainland.

Well, not entirely. We have 2 3-wide ramps on the lowest surface level at 2 sides of the cutoff, and assuming everyone comes from the southern portion of the map (as my migrants have pointed out for me), I should be able to keep a steady eye on everything that goes on along the perimeter, and whose visiting.

I haven't gotten anything else built or mined yet. This was my top concern, and as long as I was valued at a pittance, I wasn't bothered by any kobolds or gobbos. That is, until the caravan arrives. Their first visit ought to help me refine my passages so I can properly setup some decoy trade depots. That way I can still gain wagons, even if I'm locked out from the outside world. Provided safe passage all-around, I will block the decoy, and permit a shortcut, or at least, a shorter path into my home without having to reach the river to gain access (I might use more decoys at deeper points closer to the river to act as a delay so I can have more time to open the shortcut). I don't know exactly what I'll do overall, but I know it will involve decoys, and taking advantage of pathfinding to give invaders a hard time.

I should be able to use this for future projects from now on, in order to at least minimize problems that would be caused by outside forces. Wildlife, however, might be a different concern. Naturally, this might no longer work after the next update. Unless climbing is a skill, then I should be able to use this for unskilled attackers where climbing is concerned, and a parkour challenge for the more skilled.

So my apprentice weaponsmith was recently mauled by a magma crab that scuttled out of the volcano the forges are built on top of. While recovering in bed, he had an idea for an artifact and crawled back to his forge (the same forge he was attacked while working at) in order to make it. He's currently gathering iron bars, rough gems, rock blocks and plant cloth for the construction. I can't wait to see the result.

Tinandolek the magma crab is still at large, having scuttled back into the volcano while before my military could arrive.

I made a horrible mistake.

The only metals available in Reignedflags are lead and silver. I decided to make my army wield swords. Little did I know that silver is one of the worst materials to make a cutting edge with. Now I'm going to have to melt all my weapons down to make warhammers.

Always check the magmawiki, kids.

While under new management (came back to the game after a while off), i decided to clean things up and get my defenses in order. In the middle of restructuring my entrance, a vile force arrived. Pulling everyone inside I remembered I had torn down my legendary doors and ripped out most of my traps, making it possible for the 3 squads of trolls to get into my fortress.

After they made it through the first set of 3 iron door pairs, I decided to do something drastic as my marksdwarves were not dropping enemies fast enough. I have a dragon caged in my prison that is repeatedly trained and then wilded, but at the moment she was (Trained). I have a fortification inaccessible from the outside that is directly across from my entrance (thus giving marksdwarves easy firing on the invaders hitting the door. I pulled out the marksdwarves and designated a pasture and assigned the dragon to it.

When the dwarf assigned to bring the dragon to the pasture canceled his job, i quickly tried to rectify the situation by reassigning the dragon to the cage, but it as no good. She proceeded to walk all the way to the to the marksdwarf tower overtop the main entrance, and shoot flames out at the invaders. Two things i learned this day: dragon flame does not ascend or descend z-levels (the goblins sustained no damage), and dwarves die of suffocation when melted by dragonfire friendly fire.

Horrible things have happened.

During an effort to secure a section of the third caverns for use as farmland, the dreaded last-breath of the dwarves attacked: flying monsters with black leathery skin, whose bite is venomous and whose queen can even spray the venom as an aerosol. The dwarves didn't stand a chance, and now many of them don't stand at all. I lost the entirety of the fortress below the third soil layer underground. Two dwarves are in the hospital, and 8 lie dead. What's worse is that the syndrome of the venom is 100% guaranteed to be fatal for any dwarves, roughly two years after contracting it, and is spread by contact with the material, which is now all over the damn place.

Until the beasts leave, nobody is going down there for any reason. The fortress is too young for this.

Unfortunately, there is an aquifer with no easy way to get around it. My only access to stone will come from pumping out another hole

Tested an embark for my next community fortress.  My first evil embark.  3 seconds in, an evil cloud appears on top of the wagon.  3 seconds later, it's all over.

Note to self: entirely above ground fortresses in regions with evil clouds aren't going to work.  Time to try an overlapping embark with some non evil tiles...

They COULD work... you just have to be lucky and be able to build in short concentrated bursts with a massive team of masons, who are ready to dive under shelter in a moments notice. :P

Taking note of the fact that dwarves do not take cover when confronted with enemies. They flee AWAY from the fortress. And usually in the general direction of the threat...

Its a survival method, the ones who are probably going to die run towards the threat, to keep the threat busy and save as many others as they can.

But since everyone thinks they will die, they ALL run towards the threat...  :-\

Meanwhile, EmeraldCity grows slowly. Population of 14, 3 of those are farmers, 6 miners, 3 masons, a furnace operator and a smith. The magma tube has been capped, and furnaces / smelters built, as well as a glass furnace. The soil layer has its farms set up, the magma tube ringed with a pathway linking either side. 2 levels down, following a ramp, opens up on a massive Hall of Legends (massive for me at least, usually don't use multiple z-levels for stuff) that will have 2 pathways, separated by a water channel supplied from the local river. Short pathways jog over the channel, heading towards the next ring.

A metric ton of copper and alunite has been dug up, and all obsidian found has been turned into blocks for future use.

As I type this up, we get another 7 migrants, most of whom will be joining the military force that I will soon build. First, I need to get better, more secure lodgings built underground, and enough armor and weapons made to equip them all.
