Just lost the same fort for the third time. I have reclaimed.
This time, I had sufficient food, and was able to repair most of the damage to the flood trap. I had expanded quarters, built extensive catacombs, figured out I had to unforbid and reclaim all the body parts to address the ghost problem. I expanded the great hall, and arranged to have every inch smoothed and engraved. I expanded the farms to avoid the previous "starving to death" problem that made the second reclaim so much fun.
I bought and brought weapons and armour, to help stave off the potential fun of a goblins raid or siege (the demise of my first fort). I had approximately forty militia members out of 100 residents. I dug down to a lovely magma pipe, and even killed off two forgotten beasts. I survived a couple of nascent tantrum spiral, one of which ended with a murder, adn legendary war hammer made from a dwarven leg bone, and an inexplicably cheerful craftsdwarf.
The only oddity was the large number of goblins and trolls hanging about. These were the remains fo the last successful assault on the previous fort. These denizens of the area were listed as "friendly", and were easier to work around. My expansion plans worked around these harmless creatures, and they simply became part of the scenery.
Then came the first siege. With forty trained militia men and a trapped entrance, I was not worried. I called in my citizens to the burrows, and activated the squads.
The formerly friendly trolls and goblins went bat-shit insane. I suddently received a series of cancelled jobs, and an influx of deaths. Assuming dwarves were not seeking the burrows, I sent two squads outside to protect the dwarves. On closer examination, I determined that the burrow was not as teaming as it used to be. In fact, the number of dwarves dropped from 100 to 80 in short order. Sealing off the fortress, I attempted to take out the fifth column of goblins and trolls, unsuccessfully. In the end, my military was left in tatters, I had less than 40 dwarves left, and most of those were tantruming.
Once again, I was forced to abandon. I have reclaimed for the fourth time.
