I have lost many a forts, but today was the first to a tantrum spiral. It was all because of an FB. Damn thing climbed up through my well. He went unnoticed by me, until he killed off 5 dwarves and got half the rest sick, before it died. It quickly spiraled from there. I got low enough to get more migrants, but it was to late to save this fort. Miasma out of control, berserk and insane dwarves all over, buildings torn down, levers for gates destroyed. So I had them meet on my bridge, one of my (sane) dwarves pull a lever, and into the pit these migrants went.
Moral of this story... Always put a grate below a well, so enemies can not sneak in!

Been there, done that. 640+ of the bastards unleashed at once couldn't kill a goblin.

This is dwarf fortress! Clearly, you forgot to turn up their movement speed, and the power of their bite attack so that they are in the realm of Monty Python levels of insanity.

I demand that you go back and do it again, the right way this time!

"horrifying screams come from the darkness below!" as soon as I unpaused in a new fort.  Uh oh, that doesn't sound good.
Post the save and keep us updated!

Oops, I only just saw this and I've made it to summer (with seasonal autosave so the initial save is gone) plus I use the Masterwork mod.

I've carefully bypassed the caverns to access magma.  The fight seems to be taking place in cavern 3, I keep getting reports of "x creature has been caught in a cloud of flames!", The first creature to have it happen to them was a gremlin bowman so I suspect that a gremlin grabbed the hidden lever down there, and "x creature [has become/is no longer] enraged" lately that creature has been "angry deep one right hand" *chuckle*  I'm currently situated in a neutral biome sandwitched between a haunted and a terrifying biome so I got underground as fast as I could; decontructed the wagon, channeled the area below the items chopping down trees as needed, channeled an access ramp, dug a room that became a dual purpose meeting/pasture and assigned all animals to it then built a bridge over the opening and put a wall in the access ramp once everyone was underground.  I've just built an access corridor to the surface in preparation for the first migrants, keeping the door shut until I can put adequate traps along the corridor.  It's currently raining elf blood in the evil biomes *chuckle*

I always ask for pets, seeds and thread.  Sometimes other things depending on my needs, like steel or flux stone on a flux free site, sand on a sand free site.

I'm sure other people have other things they prefer to get.

Also, how would you get the dwarves to put the mountain of rock crafts into barrels and not just lying there so they can be much quicker with their hauling to the depot? Or do they just do that automatically and I've committed the great sin of running out of barrels?

Barrels are for food. Bins are for other things, like crafts. And dwarves will automatically pick the bin up, take it to the craft, put the craft in the bin, and take the bin back to the stockpile.

One of those "what the hell?" days:

see red "r", figure necromancer's using danger room, check. Forgotten beast dismembered my last miner (last three suffered a series of horrible accidents, only one construction related). In the royal office. Which has an apparent hole to the cavern where a fortification was never installed.

 It is a green, furry scorpion with three eyes and a poisonous bite, in case anyone is wondering. The weaver (who is legendary) decides the better of it mid-fight and books it. The peasant is choked by its claws and suffocates.
I send troops to kill it, and the royal guard quickly do. I decide the trouble is averted and check the rest of the fort.

There is somehow a fire on the surface. Splashback from the volcano, I guess? Everyone quickly ordered down. Notice tantrum brewing. Save and quit. Too much trouble for one day.

Something funny happened in my fort today, though it's with the Masterwork mod.  I will explain for those who have never used it.

I purchased a Hellfire Landmine (A type of Pet used for defense, it blows up in a huge ball of fire when touched.  But they're very expensive) and it was still sitting in the Depot after the traders left, because I hadn't built the cage or made an animal stockpile yet.

A Grave Cat comes walking along and I get a notification that it opened the cage!  It attacks the landmine... And the cat, my Depot, and all the cloth and leather left inside get blown to smithereens. 

I was planning to put that somewhere else for defense.  And do you know what happens minutes after my landmine is gone?

Night creature shows up.

It's... beautiful

What does it do?
Look pretty. Also, it's the ground floor of a 100-z tower. And its center will be a 2x2 tube to drop kittens and goblins down. And when I get to making it, the top will be a shrine to Armok. I'd go into glorious detail, but I'm on my phone and thus can't pull out all the pretty pictures I have. (Also I haven't made any yet.)
100 z-levels consisting of 1442 units of material for walls alone? That would take 144200 units of materials only to build the walls for those 100 levels. Oh man, even with 4 blocks per stone it'd take 36050 units of raw stone, with each stone processed into blocks first.

Good luck with that. keep us updated, man. bonus points if it's all the same color of stone!
Hehehehehe. I have fire clay *and* red sand, I'll be fine. The whole tower won't be along these lines: I'm just going to build high enough to accommodate ~300 dwarves, and then the eight outer circles will narrow to become the legs of either a table or a cone in the sky, the summit of which will be whence I drop enemies of my fortress. This being, of course, goblins and cats. And elves if I can figure out how.

The dwarves are happy.
Too happy.

Everyone is well fed and drunken. My mayor is making the easiest demands. And forgotten beasts are just military fodder.

But there are still not enough chairs despite a chair for just about every chert table. I must eliminate this.
And the yaks and cavy whatevers eat and multiply faster than my butchers can kill them. I almost wish I had migrants (all of them farmers.)

A goblin pseudosiege (5 simultaneous ambushes + master thieves, etc.) occured at an awkward time in Shieldroot today. The defenses were up. The surface castle was secure. All drawbridges were up. But we were in the middle of constructing a 'DOWDING' system out on the plateau in order to warn us more quickly of such ambushes. Foolishly, I left an unguarded tunnel to the room. What? Goblins incading through the tunnel? Nonsense. It was the tide of idiot dwarves flooding out of the perfectly safe fortress through this one little hole, trying to grab those coveted socks. By the time all the items were forbidden and hauling jobs cancelled, it was already too late. Nearly a hundred terrified dwarves ran about, screaming, from goblins, while their fortress sat serenely in the centre of the map, completely unmolested. The population dwindled only slightly in the end, thanks to the incredible heroes of the fort slaying goblins by the drove. Of course, every dwarf who did die was a legendary something: miners, carpenters, cooks, brewers. Almost all skill in the fortress was lost.

It happened over several savescums. There was no avoiding it.

So to recap, one minute everything was going just great, and the next we have caverns collapsing, firebreathing cave beasts, underground brush fires, a screaming swarm of poltergheists back for revenge, zombies in the corridors, drunken brawls in the dining halls, magma pouring into the caverns, rotting miasma everywhere, insanity, madness, and a flying crocodile heading right towards us!

Magma crab trying to sneak up into my fortress through the forges. Caught my head smith on the other side of a hole and started shooting basalt at 'em.

I also finally captured a female yeti. I got her trained and tied up, so now it's on to trying to breed her to the males. She was tied up to a chain near one, so hopefully the exposure resulted in a pregnancy.

Greenglass production on the island proceeds well.

Shortly before the arrival of the human caravan, one of the haulers was found as a dessicated corpse in the bunkhouse. Clearly, a vampire is on the loose. Contemplating savescumming, exporting the legends xml, and cruising through to find it. Don't feel like engaging in the salem witch trials.

The experiment in bridgeapulting stacks of bolts to unstack them resulted in failure. The construct will be dismantled.

Perhaps turning savagry up to absurd levels wasn't wise afterall; neither the human nor elven caravan had sunberries.  On the plus side, the elven caravan had whip vines. This isn't too important as a seed source, since I have them too, but it is an important indicator that they live on a savage biome. I traded them a humongous surplus. Next year may result in a larger caravan, possibly with giant tamed animals.

Humans didn't have a whole lot to offer, as always. Just lots of fish. Bought them out, gave them a surplus. Perhaps they will have more to offer next year.
