Why thank you, the fort of Chancegirdered (I think that is it's name.), ruled by the Frosted Paints, All under The Strapping Trades, has been going through hell recently.

Anyway, it's official, bridges are godly. Already caught a few trolls. Given enough room, space, time, luck, and cages, and this entire siege could become a bundle of POWs.
huh, I never think of gobbos as POWs. Now I want to put them in a labor camp. My large poulation of goblin POWs sent a letter, stating:
Dear Mageziya,
Fuck  you, fuck you so bad. The torture was bad enough. Hell, a few of us were even being offered leniancy in exchange for having our right hand cut off or defeating a FB while naked. So, in conclusion, Go take a long walk off a shor pier.

I do have a snow FB waddling around the caverns. Still thinking of ways to torture the goblins. So far making a basic execution pit. Probably will make a zoo with gobbos and trolls, which will be occansionally 'fed' a live creature from the caves. Not sure what to do with their mounts, probably just cook 'em.

This is all if I survive. This tactic of bridge flinging is bloody amazing though, only thing it cannot take out are full blown titans like a bronze colossus.

Edit: Loaded up the file again, it seems one of my unarmed POW escaped. I remember setting a pit (I.E. a stupidly long drop to death.) and ordering a single goblin thrown down it. It was sorta funny as he was running around the cage containment site, and when he saw the miners expanding the area, he would run away while the miners ran away/ chose a different rock to mine. Sent my Tiny militia against him. They beat him to death. I also assembled my militia into a single squad, and it seems that members of my militia from failed forts migrated to my fort, so my militia is not as tiny as it seems.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

Sorry for the double post, but,

They made it in, there was too much on the bridge, meaning it was unable to raise itself up and gloriously save the day. I am now watching as goblins and their mounts trickle inwards on my fort, bringing about its doom. Whiskergirder (The name was not Chancedgirder.) will fall. The frosted paints will die, and The Strapping trades will be left with another, disappointing failure in their quest for glory. I blame the lack of steel and very poor militia training.

I do have an entombed vampire...hmmmm, I will release him.

Welp zerg rush tiem, will report back if they somehow make it.

REPORT: Welp, that was a climatic finale to the fortress of Whiskergirder. Blah blah blah, majority of the dwarves slaughtered near instantly. After awhile only 2 dwarves are left, a brand new mayor (Elected during the slaughter) and a hunter. While they hid at the back of the fort trying to avoid being seen, I get the message "A human caravan from *blah* has arrived!" YES ARMORED GUARDS, THERE IS HOP- "A vile force of darkness has arrived! Fudge. Guess what, not only was it more goblin re-enforcements, THEY BROUGHT THEIR LEADER! I assigned the two survivors to a squad then gave them an order to make a beeline for the edge of the map. Hunter gets intercepted at entrance by a squad of trolls, mayor is killed, somewhere in the fort by something. (Didn't see.)

Tl;DR: Goblins slaughtered dorfs, 2  Dorfs left, human caravan arrives, goblins bring re-enforcements AND THEIR LEADER, survivors ordered to the edge of map, both intercepted on the way out of the fort. "Your power has fallen"

GG, no re.

Year 4 of Cryptdagger has ended.  A large winter siege by the goblins lasted multiple months.  Five squads of mounted troops, plus giant bat, giant olms, and giant cave spiders.  The dodge-me trap pit, weapon traps, and melee troops broke an assault on the access tunnel that came in two waves.  Some recently installed lever-operated spike traps near the tunnel entrance did excellent work on mangling the giant spiders; who died there or ended up in the pit.   One goblin squad never attacked (bug - leader was mounted on a flyer),  and another took a route through a weapon trapped choke point on the surface and got chopped up there and opted to retreat.  The rest attacked the tunnel and took huge casualties before limping off.

A long period of time was spent clearing out the stragglers.  Goblins on flying mounts hanging about (the fort took more casualties clearing these out than they did in the main assault), and getting rid of the "sieging" goblins sitting in the bottom of a pit.  The latter got *very* good at blocking or dodging crossbow bolts.  Eventually they were just let out to either leave or go into weapon and/or cage traps.

The hospital staff has been busy.  Wounded from the siege (broken hip, shattered leg, some cuts), a child who got run over by a mine cart, and a bonecrafter in the wrong place at the wrong time who got a troll corpse dumped on him (broken ribs).

Beyond that the fort's population has grown over 120 and been promoted to a County by the Mountainhomes.  Once some new barracks are added to the Keep's upper level the militia training schedules will be increased since weapons are armor are readily available and a few expert smiths are on hand.  Citizens will either get intense military training combined with a single civilian skill or sent into a "fortress cadre" program where they will get cross-training in multiple industrial skills and more limited military training.  The latter hopefully to prove valuable as early immigrants to later forts since they can effectively cover multiple industrial niches while things get established.

My dorfs are mastering the esoteric arts of wild boar and mountain goat wrangling. Made some progress with the boars already and have a trained boar piglet born in captivity. Too bad an acute food shortage forced the adult boars to be slaughtered, so most likely there won't be a boar factory in the future. I'll keep the piglet around to teach my parent cive some mad boar handlin' skillz, though. Not sure if the mountain goats are worth the effort, but whatever. They ran into a cage trap, so might as well learn about them too. Oh, and the cage traps also caught the fearsome and mighty duck that was scaring the living bejayzus out of my plant gatherers. Yay.

Other than that, my dorfs are pretty much busy working on the roofs of refuse stockpile and "outdoors" farm. After those are finished, I'll consider moving the cage traps to the caverns, because a tame helmet snake would kick ass.

Splatteredaxes, a dwarven zoology field research outpost...  :P

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

Just returned from a very long break, now my expedition leader's head is lying on the bottom of a lake and other 3 dwarfs are dead. Everything seems to be normal.

Sigged :)

Oh And The Giant Wren breeding program is currently incubating the 3rd generation. Cant slaughter the orginals cos the Animal Trainer has bonded with them, might have to assign some pet-coffins.

You forget that the ducks of our reality have had millions of years of sitting in quiet ponds and rivers, they've grown small and weak, in the Realm of Armok, everything exists to test the mettle of the mortals, a "Duck" in Dorfland is the size of a Great Dane, built like and Ox and still has primordial teeth in its beak. A Giant Duck is the size of a Bus...

Armok does not gift you life, you must earn it.

I've just lost my male giant sparrow and giant kea after they both decided to be heroes and go save a dwarf or two caught in an ambush (neither of them were their trainer). They actually managed to take one or two of them out, while my other Giant Kea earned a name by pecking out a Master Thief's eyes.

War Trained or Just released into the fray?
Neither: their trainer was 4 z-levels below in the dining hall. It's like they just went up there of their own volition. If they were named, I'd slab them.

If you had known before hand I suppose you could have made them available as pets to get the name/burial available (once adopted).

The Tundra fort, "The Frozen Paint" has been founded!

Currently freezing my way through a ,at-least, two layer aquifer, already lost a miner who became entombed by the frozen hell that is this place.

At least the sieges should freeze them selves to death if I wait long enough.

Scratch that second mine/broker/manager was just entombed. GG no re, in this frozen hell.

UPDATE: The Tundra fort, WiskerIce, the Cancer of Hell, governed by the Roasted Halls, all under The Strapping Trades, has been founded! May Armok spare my fort!

Both my miners became entombed....again...GG WP tundra, WP.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

UPDATE: Rinsewhipped! STRIKE THE TUNDRA! AND I AM SAVE SCUMMING WHEN I HIT THE ICE!
