Year 3 of Skullsgate ended with a bit of excitement.  The early parts were fairly quiet.  A migrant group pushed the fortress population to 119.  With the fifteen children about this should truncate further immigration since the pop cap is now exceeded.   Food production and housing construction have been able to keep up so far.  One migrant even brought a tame GCS along as a pet - so plans are on-going for establishing a silk farm to supplement clothing production even further.

The industry floor is fully established and busy.  Lots of gold and galena being processed for trade.  The clay layer is being exploited for stoneware pots and jugs.  And the 3rd generation of peachicks is about to mature and add to egg production along with a few chickens.

Enough goods were accumulated to essentially buy out all military metal  (copper, iron, bronze, steel) from both the human and dwarf caravans this year.  Plus enough extra to top off the meat, cheese, and booze stocks.  And the fortress has a baroness as well.

Defense development making due with what comes to hand.  The "grinder" on the main entrance is almost ready; with additional weapon traps being added as materials permit (silver, a bit of glass, and items from trade.)  A further refinement is being added to allow a longer and winding road for wagons that is trapless, but will hopefully be ignored by attackers.  A marksdwarf bunker was put in place behind the depot in any case and a squad is in barracks there.

Both the main and secondary entrance now have overhead animal detectors.  (Birds pastured on grates above the entrance tunnel.)

Militia still training, and two squads are now fully armored and combat ready.  (And they got some work as we shall see.)  The rest of the squads are using training weapons and shield only, limited armor, or practically nothing in the case of the "physical fitness" squads most dwarves are in.

Right at the end of winter the postern entrance birds detected a goblin thief.  Said thief having just also encountered a weapon trap that inflicted grevious harm.  (And which had also outright killed the thief's two associates.)  The axe squad in training was mobilized and sent out to finish off the goblin before he got away.

Before that happened the squad encountered two kobold thieves attempting to sneak in the same way.  They're quick, but do appreciably slow down as they lose feet and limbs.  After dispatching the kobolds the three axe dwarves caught the goblin and finished him off.

On the way back to the gate they triggered a goblin ambush just entering the gate.  The goblin leader lost his duel with the militia commander and at that point the remains of the squad broke and ran for it.  A few made it, but a few more were chased down and finished off.

At this point the second ambush triggered with one of the axe dwarves taking an arrow to the leg and going down.  Six lashers and an archer.  One lasher goes and finishes off the unconscious dwarf - who happens to be the baroness' consort as well.  The remaining five lashers try to prevent the two remaining axe dwarves (who attained axe lord status in the previous fight) from getting to the archer.  They fail, and the archer gets decapitated to finish things off.

First shipment of goblinite for Skullsgate.  Only downside was no goblin prisoner for the silk farm.  Now to melt things down and get more steel.  Also need to get my weaponsmith worked up a bit and then make a few adamantine weapons.  One axe dwarf was using a copper axe - and it failed miserably in body shots on goblins.  Still effective at foot and hand shots though; silly greenies!

WOOHOO, TANTRUM SPIRAL. My first ever. It's quite incredible to see just how swiftly and violently things are tumbling out of control, but thankfully most of my military is still around to maintain some semblance of order. I wonder if the fort will survive... I see very few dwarfs who aren't miserable.

Edit: There are a few who aren't batshit insane yet, praise be to Armok, but now my military's being assassinated by the crazies in their sleep. Also I have peregrine falcons in my temple chamber....

A while back, one of my dwarfs created an artifact steel mace by the name of Thiken Egom, the Confidence of Nature. The only kills it has (due to the poor skill of the wielder) are dwarfs. I like to think its name is in reference to Dwarven nature...

Well there goes hammertime. Goblin siege came got killed but also killed my military so i go and make some new military commanders then suddenly a werepig comes killes half of them and bites the rest, then turns into a human child. So the dwarfs that got bit were laying in bed resting so i had my dwarves build some walls around them and go to work on my megaprogect when i everyone starts dying! I go to the dininghall and see a bunch
of werepigs running around! The dwarfs were partying the intire time not building the walls. And thats how i lost Hammertime the fortress. 8)

I believe it's some infection caused by choking on underground dust, but about 80 out of my 88 dwarves have gone completely necrotic (in-game term is rotten, I'm assuming it's some sort of flesh eating bacteria)

It first occured in one of my seven original dwarves, when her entire body started to rot until she died..  Unfortunately I had absolutely no medical dwarves to serve her, and when this newest massive outbreak started any medical dwarves I drafted quickly became infected, if they weren't already so.

Either way, with the recent update I've decided to not start a fortress in a haunted/terrifying biome for a while just so I can finally have a fortress that lasts longer than 4-5 years and my newest one has been flourishing nicely.  Got everything secure and broke into the caverns within a year, save for irrigation cause I put it off then accidentally overflooded my farm room and had to make a second drain for all the excess water.  Next up, taming the caverns and making personal rooms so my dwarves will stfu about their problems

The mountainhome is informing me it will pay premium prices for... clear glass tools.

I don't know what to do with this information.

(also there are flying lungfish but I am to understand this is old news to everyone but me)

Just restarted a fort because I didn't like how the old one was shaping up (in spite of a rediculously easy surface level steel building) because I let the migrant waves just get out of hand and my military was just all fouled up, and my layout was shot.  Just bugged me.

So, I started again... and just starved and sobered out the entire fortress. *facepalm*  Note to self, embark with more food and booze.

Woo, am currently experiencing my very first goblin siege just after getting over a booze and food famine. The goblin leader (I'm guessing) was riding some sort of amphibious mount and it decided to take a dip, drowning her. Meanwhile a cat that got locked out led another goblin through a couple stone traps. So that's two goblins down with the only casualty being a cat. I'm almost suspicious at how well this is going.

My second attempt at a fort next to a volcano, finally found a embark site with volcano AND flux, plus all that shallow/deep metal goodness.

Turns out the metals are nothing but gold ore, with copper and lead and occasional silver as a by-product. "Prospect all" in DFHack revealed no iron ores whatsoever, no lignite or coal, and precious little flux stone. Steel will be... interesting. No tin, so no bronze.

But we make the best of it. Four magma smelters are working full time. I got lucky with a mood and now have a Legendary blacksmith, so I've given him his own magma forge and he's making nothing but high-level gold cabinets/racks/armor stands for my nobles later on. I'm at 80-plus dorfs now, with a stockpile full of golden masterwork furniture. For trading I just make rock pots and fill them with lavish meals, selling for upwards of 4,000 each, then I use the funds to buy every last scrap of iron anything to melt it down and eventually make steel. Another few good years and I'll have enough steel to outfit a military of 20 dwarves, I guess copper armor and silver hammers will have to do for now.

The embark screen said "flux", but they didn't mention that it was ONE pathetic level with pockets of marble, and it's 35 z-levels down from the rest of the fort. Luckily didn't breach any caverns on the way down, hugging the side of the volcano pipe. After mining out every last scrap of marble I've got enough to finish production of armor.

The other bright side, besides copious amounts of gold next to a volcano, is that the top of the map contains a couple layers of Fire clay. A few magma kilns later I'm sitting pretty on a small mountain of valuable pottery.

The mayor just demanded that a brass bed be placed in his bedroom. That'll be a rude awakening. Is it even possible to make a bed out of anything but wood? Even with a strange mood?

I feel like I should keep an eye on this thread and snag the 25k post or something.

Who knew this thread would last five years?

How lucky are you. I think you may have stumbled onto the perfect way of taking down large masses of zombies. Neutralize them with a giant sponge.

The first murder was commited at Atticgravel a nice all-smoothed fortress that is part of the colonising effort. The aggressor as been found to be the fluffy wambler remains we stuffed in the garbage dump. Urist McMiner was said to be ordered to dig the dump deeper to prevent such things for the next zombie attacks, although things didn't go as expected. Must we remind ourselves that the undead invasion that is plaguing the world right now as consumed 3 fortresses so far. The last pionneers from our mountainhomes are said to be seen lurking outside along with the fluffy wamblers. BE WARNED!
