Just started a new game after a looooong pause. The last time I played was with v31.01, so I genned a very easy embark. Forest, brook and lots of minerals in a nice mediocre wilderness with just 1 cavern layer. Still, the cursed 3rd migration wave almost got me. Getting the farms set up took way too long and there was no booze when the brook froze in autumn. Luckily, the dwarven merchants arrived and... surrendered their goods, though I had nothing of worth for trade. So the good old deconstructed depot bug still works. I still don't like it, but didn't want to lose my first fort in such an undwarven way.
Right now, the above ground defenses are being set up. There'll be a wall dividing the map in two with a castle in the middle and various Funny applications of magma. The production of iron weapons and armor works as well and I got 16 good soldiers. Again, I'm ashamed, because I used a danger room for fast training, but as I said, I want everything as easy as possible in this game. I'll keep the challenges for the next one.

I can't remember the thread but I remember someone saying that even without booze, vampire dwarves are still faster than regular dwarves, due to their attribute boost.

Or something along those lines at least.

My king vampire has now killed two dwarves (one a skilled axedwarf GRRR!!!...the other a mundane weaver).  In both cases, the crime was seen and reported since I have "no wall" bedrooms in big communal caverns.  It was quite comical, in both cases, watching the captain of the guard, plodding along in his steel armor, trying to catch the unarmored vampire to put him in a cage.  The king gaily sprints from place to place, minding his own business, chatting amiably with the other dwarves...until he stops for a meeting or something and the captain of the guard FINALLY catches up to him then frog marches him to his cage in the dining hall.

Forbidding the door to the king cell afterwards solved problems for me.

But that is my mayor. And the Engraver put it in her room. Wow, just wow.
Also, Yes Helmspell is a awesome sounding name. Finally, yeah, Mussels, seriously.

Second year in a row with no migrants. So far, I've only gotten the first two hard-coded waves and the fortress is really slowing down due to only have 17 working dwarves.

If my humans weren't such piss-poor shots, I'd have those damn carp shot...

Human McDumbass cancels wood collection: Nonthreatening aquatic creature is staring at me.

But alas, I know damn well they'll dive into a roaring river to try and finish them off when they expend thier iron bolts, as shockedtowns taught me; Humans are nightmarishly aggressive, to the point of being as suicidal as dwarves if not moreso, since dwarves at least understand you need to know how to swim to fight in water.

dwarves at least understand you need to know how to swim to fight in water.
