Had a goblin ambush, all seemed normal until I noticed one of them was an elf...  :o

A little legends digging revealed she was abducted by the goblin civ, where she apparently eventually became a citizen, marrying a fellow abductee and having two children.

A little more reading reveals that her husband was previously murdered, most likely by a goblin. So she was a single mother.

I feel bad now. Such a courageous life, enduring being kidnapped, and managing to thrive in an alien and most likely oppressive society, only to be cut down by my dwarves, leaving her two children to fend for themselves.

A moments silence...

My Speardwarf had a finger bitten off by an FB. It was the only injury he received. He's been in a coma for a year now. It was a snow FB, too, and didn't bleed at all so I can rule out any syndromes.

Angst coma, maybe?

You probably need to deconstruct his bed to make him wake up.

Some random immigrant miner ended up driving off a goblin ambush singlehandedly.

He's still not getting in my fort until I finish my spike pit.

In other news, my cyclotron managed to take down an entire necro-siege and half a migrant wave (oopsies!) before being dismantled by a zombie yeti. Godspeed, Whirly McDoomcart.

A nice, calm fort in the middle of a road. A cubicle design, second year and overflowing with bundles of little demonic contraptions from hell babies. A religious place, everyone worshipping 3+ gods per person. Including a giant horned owl.

Cant wait for the kobold sieges I modded in.

Could have been a FB with a poisonous bite - not all syndromes involve contaminants.  Although it's more likely that your dwarf is just lazy, I think...

Since this settlment lacked the starting soldiers to kickstart a military, I've opted to turn off invaders until my squads are at least competant level soldiers I''ve also decided to set up spikes along the outer edge of my moat, since it'll freeze in the winter.

Oh and a farmer-turned sergeant is using a goblin snatcher's troll fur cloak as her primary weapon.

After watching a caravan guard axelord one-hit a necro siege of 50 zombies and learning that the 'attacked by the dead' thought classifies as tragedy, I decided to make a zombie-powered military training and hardening setup twisted in the likeness of a GSC silk farm. Good news is, it works and further resurrection can be shut down at will. Bad news is, some partial skeletons are left unanimated, so it's hard to calibrate the power... ugly news is, 4 or 6 zombie goblins utterly pwned my 2 bronze-clad hammerdwarves. What am I doing wrong, is hammer damage ineffective against zombie HP? They did fall to marksdwarf bone bolts easily enough. Funny thing is, a doe rabbit corpse got lodged in my fortifications, in line of sight (if I lower the bridges) to the necromancer. I wonder what will happen...

Experiments are being made on the Volcano Mountain of No Ore or Sand to attempt to replicate the minecart shotgun seen in the engineer's dreams.

As overseer, I'm starting to wise it wasn't miners that were tasked with pushing the things, as one of them got her arm broken by a rogue minecart going the wrong way, and another got sent sailing across the room by a minecart that got spit out the rollers in the wrong direction (backfire?).
Takeoff didn't do too much damage.
Landing and sliding on the ground did possibly mortal damage. Hitting the wall proved fatal.

Meanwhile more dwarves keep showing up for unknown reasons. I say unknown as this is far from a rich fortress, or was far from rich before I chained a couple dwarves to their posts manufacturing obsidian crafts and encrusting them with gems. That made some fairly expensive things.

Meanwhile some doofus set off the Magma Doomsday Device Safety Plug. I have no idea how, but it meant digging the obsidian back out of the feed channel. That was completed without any casualties for once.
One block of obsidian fell far enough to expose part of the sea and some candy. Next on the list are mining operations to get down there. Ideally after making a cyclotron or five between mining operations and home base.

Oh and there's a magma crab lurking in the magma shaft.

Village Shemonul, "Plankwaywards", Opal 262

As time goes by, my dwarves slowly get more adept at their trades. This includes not oft used professions such as lye maker, milker, dyer and shearer. My animal husbandry system is paying off and we're swimming in eggs, milk, cheese and wool. I have so many animals in fact that the milker can milk non stop without any animals running bare! The new still/quern/plant process system also runs nicely, and a variation of foodstuffs and products can be created at will when needed. The only exception being dwarven syrup for some reason being unable to be processed. A dyer works non-stop creating even more valuable pig-tail socks.

I must also be the only entity creating cloth, as the elves, humans and dwarves have not brought any for two years. My legendary farmers grow enough pig tails to last though. The village has also been elevated to county. The count demanded a trifle pewter throne for commemoration in his bedroom. He had to wait for the caravan to return with this precious metal but got his wish granted eventually. New quarters were dug and engraved. He mostly mandates amulets and bolts to be made and not exported, which is fine by me. I hardly create any crafts any more as stone is precious for block creation and the worn clothes randomly laying around the fort are of such high trade value they suffice many times over whatever I want from the caravans.

Goblin ambushes attack during every trade caravan, trying to disrupt life. They get dispatched quickly by the dwarves patrolling the ramparts or the caravan guards. One ambusher sprung up to kill a mason working on fort expansion, only to immediately receive an arrow to the throat. The mason was able to flee while the other attackers were killed by the marksdwarves.

One sneaky thief managed to get by the traps and into the courtyard, only to be spotted on the refuse pile. By my war dogs and war grizzly bears. The resulting pieces that were left of him did not have to be moved. Another refuse pile has been enclosed and designated as the old one does not suffice any more.

I have plenty of stock for just about everything, with the exception of sand. With food, drink and basic needs out of the way, I've commissioned a steel set of armor to be made for the commander. I'm going to breach the caverns and go down deeper. I'm hoping for a good siege.

One of the wardogs guarding the entrance to my current fort earned the name "Fortressmouth" by killing multiple thieves and snatchers. I thought that was oddly appropriate.

Two deaths at The Rustic RabbitHut: a dwarf and a kobold.
Their tale is told throughout the generations.

I guess the moral of it all is that,
whether you stand on the side of light or shadow,
you always end up jammed into a room full of zombies.
