Wood is perfectly fine for holding back magma, i've used ice blocks for magma delivery systems, they won't melt or anything like natural ice walls will.
Of course it makes no freaking sense, but it works.
I just realized there are conditions where you can make things like wood melt without burning. How splendid.

Addendum to the prior missive:

Urista Sakzul, while I appreciate that you learned a lot making this artifact, going from a Great weaponsmith to Legendary, what the HFS am I supposed to do with this?

That's actually quite useful in a trap in the dining hall, or for a military dwarf. I would put it in the Fortress Guard office due to its name.

Which incidentally makes for hilarious conversationpiece in combination with the name if your fort and civ.

Annnnnnnnnd, somehow, the wonder-weaponsmith used the creation of the spear to bribe her way into the mayor's office.

I knew she had an ulterior motive.  {She's one of the few who has spoilerite as one of her favourite metals, I doubt she'll last long}

I used a danger room to counter lack of steel and big, big goblin invasions. When I turned the lever and saw the results after ten seconds, I felt dirty and wrong.

Yeah I danger roomed for the first time a while ago....

It aint right man!

Yeah, I don't know what you're complaining about, lead is heavy and artifact things become more effective than their base material in the first place, for all you know that spear might be the best weapon you'll ever have.

I'd wager it won't do much anything unless the dwarf using it bashes instead of stabbing.

Furnacebright update.

Year two went well. barracks were built. Warehouses carved from the bones of the earth. And much trade has been done with the outside world. The fort now supports a secure sun berry farm. Along with a mix of underground and surface crops. The brewers are becoming very skilled in their crafts and the cooks now have more than enough materials to make lavish meals to keep the forts occupants happy.

Inevitably this has attracted the attention of goblins. A total of 1 ambush and 1 vile force of darkness were wiped out with the help of a human caravans guards. A few citizens and 1 human guard died. Some minor cuts and bruising. No nerves or muscles damaged. With the benefit of caging the lead goblins war cave crocodile.

Year three continued much the same. The tunnel networks and crafting complexes starting to become extensive. Barracks were finished and now the militia has a full squad of melee warriors lead by the militia commander. Fully clad in bronze with a few pieces of precious imported steel weapons. The best hunters have formed a fairly experienced marksdwarf squad. The captain leading it being given an imported silver crossbow. Now they are also fully decked in leather gear.

Currently besieged. A much larger force has arrived including trolls and entire units of cave crawler and crocodile riders. Even a few cave swallow riders. The drawbridge is firmly shut and the marksdwarves are manning the battlements to take out the cave swallows flying near the gates. Then soften up the (thankfully) mostly melee troops before the commander attempts a sally to break the siege. Hopefully the gates will hold. There are enough provisions to last the fort several years in the storehouses. And the farms are secure from the outside world.

Let them come!

Update:

The marksdwarves proved their worth multiple times over. Pincushioning the cave swallows and their riders out of the sky before they got to the gate. Then made the crawler and croc riders rout. Shooting several crawlers dead and riders. Before softening up a unit of pikes and trolls. The commanders unit then burst out and routed what was left.

Some bruises and dents so far. And tens of enemy dead. Goblinite is now being collected for processing.

marksdwarves are amazing.

A productive day today: dwarfs of Daggerbite killed a minotaur, forgotten beast and giant cave spider.

First, hammerdwarfs of Daggerbite put down the minotaur Edimi 'The Courageous Shadow'. I liked the way the two hammerdwarfs smashed it in the head - one to floor it and one to kill it.

Then marksdwarfs of Daggerbite killed the Forgotten Beast Thelo Gusseduces - after it had ripped apart our vampire secret-weapon. (It actually ripped off a foot and an arm before clawing it to death). The vampire had also decided to treat itself to a leisurely snack on a sleeping dwarf child before meeting the beast and dying. (last meal??!)

Finally the hammerdwarf-mayor of Daggerbite kicked a giant cave spider to death, after his colleague proved the value of wearing iron helmets. (The mayor had previously decided that just bashing it with his hammer and biting it was not vicious enough)

Since I am locked in a perpetual siege of glitchness due to my wanting to have olm-riding goblins charge out of smoke, I have begun anew, placing a human among the founders named Splint, with the simple title of "Foreman."

A combination basic untamed/joyous wilds embark stream, possibly temperate, cause they location was near temperate lands.

And while this civilization has needed tools like wheelbarrows and nest boxes, it lacks stone. Yet somehow has metal. And again no iron, so I am defaulted to steel. Human civs certainly are lacking at times...

My fortress just ended. An ambush of goblins slaughtered those outside, and one or two got in before I put up a door and locked it.

By the time the goblins (and the one guy who went insane) were killed, I had two survivors.

But I just realized how much I love this game.

Goblins attacked right after three babies were born so I kept not reading the announcements and just passed them.  This mean that the goblins weren't noticed by me until I saw that someone bled to death.  Down from 80 goblins to 30 so far and everyone is Miserable.  This'll be interesting.

Spent the last year digging and smoothing the new living area and the new workshop zones. Almost completely done with the temporary fort.

Down to one dwarf.  Two goblin ambushes and a Necromancer siege happened.  I did not get the levers pulled in time.  There are about a hundred undead now between the many dead dwarves, goblins and body parts.  Oh dear.
