My military got decimated by Goblin Crossbowmen. ANd they refuse to wear metal boots. Foolish dwarves.
There's really not much reason for crossbowmen to wear armor a copper bolt will cut through adamantine high boots like butter.

My marksdwarves tend to love going of and hitting goblins with their crossbows. When facing swardsgoblins, armor can come in handy.

Not from my experience.

And it's started snowing. This wouldn't be a problem, if my Dwarves weren't literally camouflaging themselves against me. An engraver dwarf looks exactly like a dwarf engraving in limestone in the snow.

ARG

I look away for one minute, and a sow corpse goes missing. Can't an overseer drown pigs in peace for once?

Where has that corpse walked off to ;_;

Well, everyone refuses to wear boots.

I took it to the testing arena before I posted. Tears right through.

Woah. Still incredibly lucky.

Now I'm getting zombies dying of their own accord.

0 casualties.

I took it to the testing arena before I posted. Tears right through.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

No. The armour is working.
It blocks the bolt just fine.
The edge attack then gets turned into a blunt attack.
And if your Dwarf doesn't have high toughness (and for the record, none of the arena Dwarves do).

Then things get broken. What happens in the arena differs on the field.

My oh-so-tough were-civets have taken multiple metal bolts to the head and elsewhere, and survived.

Crossbows really not overpowered~

The arena offers average conditions and under average conditions magical hell metal can't stop the damage from a crossbow. If RS was updated or a similar tool existed it would be easy enough to see if an impossibly tough dwarf could shake off a crossbow bolt provided he was lapped in layer after layer of adamantine over six leather cloaks but if the stars have to align perfectly for a crossbow to be anything short of a godslaying raygun there's definitely a balance issue.

Just getting to starting the military in their training, just had my first ambush not too long ago, some pikeman showed up. I  lost 2 rangers and a woodcutter but altogether it was decently successful.

population of 134 so far

Destroy it. Leave not a single piece of that hideous, profane thing existing.

My (Dwarf) Fortress is going along nicely. Despite the assurances of the map that I would have Metals I could not find a single one. Despite this, I created plenty of Bone Crafts with Gems, allowing me to import in weapons and armor. At a good time too, because a Goblin Ambush attacked my fortress. My small force of Five Leather-Clad warriors fought off the invaders suffering two deaths and two wounds.

Other than that, two Dwarves drowned in the Stream near my fort... I hate it when Ice melts so suddenly.

My fortress (Fortressmurder) Is doing pretty well, having 256 dwarfs and no actual goblin ambushes yet. The problem I am having now is every dwarf child goes insane from not having any shirts/shoes/socks on.
I have a giant graveyard only for burying children. And Dwarfs have actually have to kill their own child for the sake of it going berserk. It's getting so bad that they are starting to rise from the dead and attacking dwarfs, now having three military dwarfs with only one leg, and even more injured. My legendary dining room and great bedrooms are keeping out tantrum spirials.

The only actually ambushes I have had are from minotaurs, and then not really good ones, they are really not that strong, only one dwarf got hurt in the second one, only sent about 10 dwarfs at him. There have been several kobold thiefs, but all failed to do anything. Also I had a failed were-koala attacking my fortress, in daylight, so it went into its human form right away, and got shot down by a passing hunter.

Were-Pony !

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Were-pony squad.

~Meanwhile~

In the middle days of Winter, the Autumn caravan finally finished packing up and left without incident.

The next month after the new full moon, two zombie raccoons were spotted, the first zombies spotted in a year.
Four Dwarves were sent out, and a nearby civilian aided with a crossbow, and the raccoons were destroyed, several times, without injury incurred on the Dwarves part.
So it seems that the creature cap was never reached.
The RNG literally did nothing to my fort for an entire year.

The raccoons arriving the moment I finished building the brass tower slightly worries me.

like 100 goblins all riding cave bears, plus like 50 cave dragons invaded my fort of around 152 dwarves

now theres only 9 left and all of them are immobile from injuries except for one child who continues to harvest the plump helmets over and over wading through thick clouds of miasma

theres still like 30 goblins on bears on the edge of the map but they havent moved yet

everything was going so well

edit: one of my first dwarves went berserk and killed the rest of the dwarves that were laying on the hospital floor around him, fort over

The Rustic RabbitHut

39) Picking Up the Pieces
40) Chewing and Chewing All Spring Long

With the whole ambush thing wrapped up, things are going well.
I got this tune in my head, so we must be moving forward.

Here's the 3 undead congregations in my fort.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My hospital is now empty. The test child crawled out after numerous surgeries.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Still got lots of other kids to test...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We butcher the immigrant livestock, but we actually got a breeding pair of donkeys so I'll keep them.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We trade with the elves for berries and seeds. It's all I have time for.
Ooh, I notice one of my hunter dwarves has over 100 kills at a place called White Jungle.
Sounds familiar...

Summer arrives, and the Summer migrants come shortly afterward...
