I have 174 dwarves, thriving industries, and started training a military in expectation of a goblin siege.

Third year rolls around, accumulated stupid amounts of wealth, when I realise I've never even had a goblin snatcher. Sure enough, no goblins in the civ screen.

After realising this, and being the warmonger I am, first thing I do is seize an elven caravan and butcher the merchants.

What else can I do to provoke the hippies to war? And is a siege by the elves something I should worry about?

I think you have to mod the game to turn on the elven diplomat, then kill the diplomat to start the war.

But I won't spoil any suprises.

ALternativly just have DF hack fix it for you and deliberatly violate tree chopping quotas. That usually pisses them of quite a bit. Hell my settlement's renovations used almost nothing but timber, so an elf would probably die of heart failure just walking down the entry tunnle, since it has walls made of wood, and wood derived pearlash glass windows in the barracks. Oh and the depot is made of wood.

I just imagine elven merchants always cowering, wondering if my humies will decide to chop them too....

Operation Boatmurdered is going well so far. The water wheels are working, and so is the magma pumpstack. Just waiting on the goblins to arrive with their siege.

Apparently my war lion, who watches the outer drawbridge for thieves and such, is so badass that he can survive with a rotten stomach, completely swollen with lion blood. He was bitten by a weregila monster. He vomited for awhile, then was dizzy for awhile, but he stopped flashing and is now back at his post with seemingly no negative consequences of having a necrotic stomach.

Oh shi- Can animals contract a wereperson's syndrome, and if so, what does it do?

My fort was almost doomed.  There were four adults left and 25 children.  They had food, but nearly no booze left.  Jobs were set to get booze coming and coffins made for the hundreds that had murdered eachother in the halls of Bookwild.

And then....

Migrants came.  Nearly 25, enough to get the fortress back on it's feet.

Well, first of all, I'm not one for !!danger rooms!! but seeing as how this is my first fort without any weapon/armor metals on the map, but tons of platinum and layers and layers of flux. So I decide that a danger room would be ok to train my military this once. So I made four spike traps with 10 wooded spikes in each trap. Found out that 40 spikes will more than eliminate who ever is in the room (obviously they had no armor, just cloaks and such which I thought would be enough, guess not). So I count my losses (six dwarves and a baby). Next thing I know I was sieged by a ton of goblins. I had a huge grin on my face as I alerted my military and raised the bridge. What I did not know is that by mistake, I created a retractable bridge. Long story short I went from 95 dwarves to 15. Time to rebuild....

I have two minotaurs in "prison" (not encaged, but in a special room remotedly opened), which i  use to "dump" unwanted dwarves.

One has grabbed a silk coat and has killed 50 dwarves with it - for now.

The other only STRANGLES everything and everyone he can.

Even bunnies.

Maybe he thinks the buns are like coal, and if you squish them hard enough you make diamonds.
Well, living things are mostly made of carbon, so...

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

I'm about ready to embark. My site is mostly hot but calm Tropical Savannah with no aquifer, but to the north a bit is a Sand Desert containing an aquifer. I plan on building a small 3x3x3 chamber for the aquifer to fill with its clean, fresh water so I can construct some wells.

As for what I'm bringing with:
Spoiler: Items and Supplies (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Animals (click to show/hide)
I did put some skills into my dwarfs, and yet I still have 112 points to spend, and I don't know what else to bring with.

Iron ore and flux boulders.
I'm certain I'll be hitting iron ores on my map, and the flux I can order from my caravans. Besides, iron is really good by itself, so why make steel? I mean, sure, it's stronger and more valuable, but since when has valuable armor ever saved your life?

I'm just saying.

Steel armor has a MUCH higher chance of stopping critical hits.

Steel weapons critical MUCH more often.
