The Human Caravan finally arrived. Remembering my dealings with the Capitol the previous year (playing a Human Settlement, again) I mass produced shields (They were to have 200% value). I did not pay any attention to the quality of the goods, and instead focused on the defenses and other projects.

Now I discover my worst shield (which is of superior quality) sells for 3,000 coins. Time to quickly equip my militia, those goblins will show up any moment now...

If something went right, clearly ravens were involved.

They're plotting against you.

Town Rithutalath "Waxbolt" Opal, 256, Winter

A vile force of evil has arrived!

Ok, no problem. Danger alert to my civs , my markdorfs (10) to the ramparts and place my axedorfs (10) with a zillion wardogs near the entrance past the traps. The Oily Furnaces (I kid you not) with my original 7 are on standby.

A group of axegobs riding jabberers and voracious cave crawlers coming from the east. Piece of pie. The markdorfs shoot a bunch and they hardly reach my gate when they rout. Victory!

Oh wait, is that a hammergob? Didn't see that one earlier. Or his group of pals in the west who are now at the walls. A bunch get caught in the traps a few get smacked around into the moat by the axedorfs and the dogs go into a frenzy. The axedorfs chase the survivors.

Why is my militia commander fighting? He's with the backup squad I didn't intend to use. Oh crap gobs flying elk birds flew over the wall and are killing my markdorfs. What!? A group of bowgobs just got in range of the axedorfs outside the wall! Carp carp carp carp.

A few manage to chase them off but with heavy casualties. I lost my militia commander and another three of my starting seven, half the axesquad and the marksquad. Siege over! Could've been worse I suppose.

Why is my dining room flooding through the well? Where did the floodgate go? (It got destroyed by the gobs).

Begin tantrumspiral.

Uris McAxedwarf cancels rest, throwing tantrum.

Urist McThresher has been found murdered.

Kinda random, but this is not the traditional DF thought.

Just spent a good while dig-exploring a promising embark... but only found lots of obsidian, gold and aluminium - no armor material whatsoever. As I intended to save scum anyway to not destroy the map with mining shafts everywhere, I didnt really bother about walling off breached caverns. A GCS somehow got to the surface and started webbing some animals and my exp.leader. Of course he gets paralyzed, but he does reach legendary fighter & wrestler during his struggle - I guess the GCS biting him in the head for half a month helped in that regard.
Growing impatient what with digging 150 z-levels deep, breaching MASSIVE caverns, uncovering 3 magma pools (in addition to the volcano) and not finding any useful ore (galena really doesnt count), I gave designations to dig near the magma sea to find some candy stores. Found it alright, but while watching my leader get his head turned into an eating bowl, I forgot to undesignate certain areas and boom "You have found an eerie ticket to the circus!".
It was fun while it lasted (didnt even get to late spring), but I'd love to have a dfhacks prospect feature for .11 to shorten this "Is my embark site any good?" digging... I would have been happy with copper.   :-\

Finally, something is about to happen. A were-opposum attacks one of my very few metalsmiths. Perhaps this will be penance for my success?

Not even close. Full fortress military, and the metalsmith was fully armoured and armed at the time. Fought off the Lycan with ease, and escaped to go brew some booze, without a single scratch on his beard.

Z. Urist Muthkat, one of two starting 7 Dwarves who I brought as marksdwarves (now a grand master marksdwarf), then began to quickly demonstrate why a good crossbow with a good Dwarf behind it is very, very scary.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I scoff at those who say crossbows are not worth it. I do believe if the Opposum lives, I shall have one more Lycan to add to my collection.

I am now certain some cruel god of the RNG has come to the attention of my fort, and is forcing me to endure the eternal suffering of my fortress's success.

I can live with this.

(Masterwork)

My militia captains a berserker with 15 crossbow kills to his name. He's only been testing himself against badgers, Kea, and other annoyances but he swings the thing so hard it becomes embedded in their skulls with alarming regularity. He's now in a melee squad with his crossbow as a weapon.

Spoiler: Wish upon a star.. (click to show/hide)

And now it appears wishes in this forum come true. Touchgirder has an undead invasion and a goblin siege (>170 invaders) while the human caravan tries to trade with me. Most excellent indeed.

Just dumped everything out of all wooden bins down a nice dry shaft, left it forbidden, then switched dumps to my magma-dump and burned all the wooden bins away.

All shall be rebinned in magnificent gold and lead.

A minotaur has come, and died, too busy strangling a helmet snake (!)  to defend himself.

Dumping all clothing and making a bunch of metal furniture to boost every bedroom's value to compensate. Just something to do with all that bronze...

Boltssavage, 28th Galena

What a moment. We had another goblin siege just now, even though the last one was only in the 18th of Felsite. Now they brought a large party, along with a whole squad of war cave dragons. Only a year or two before, we had our first chance to truly test our new drowning-hall apparatus, which is rather ingenious, if I might add. A human diplomat came to admire it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

On a closer look...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The only snag that we had during the siege was that the human diplomat couldn't resist the urge to leave while the siege was still on. Promptly, he marched off to the drowning chamber, where he faced a few of those cave dragons, evading their attacks rather nicely. I pulled the lever. He survived the episode with only a sore sense of dignity, breathing not being necessary and all that. Seeing a goblin "general" drown was rather gratifying.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now we just need to haul the rotting carcasses away from the retrieval chamber (below the actual drowning halls). I decided to punch a hole in the canyon wall to dump them in the river. See the cobaltite bridge.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Speaking of vampires, so is our beloved queen... Only a few months ago we found a cadaver, drained of blood, lying in his bedroom. Naturally I knew that it was the work of our monarch, but I decided to pin the blame on one of our captive goblin master thieves. The joke was appreciated by most of the citizens of the fort.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That furniture is all golden, save for the bed. And now our Mountainhome is truly complete. (Perhaps I'll have to start building another project?)
