The Rustic RabbitHut

33) Cloudy Skies Show their Ugly Head
34) The Calm before the Storm

We are now safely sealed inside.
Since we saw some snatchers, we don't want to take chances.
Besides, there's a lot to do anyway.

My dwarves fail at basic channeling management, and cause a cave-in.
Nobody is hurt, but several dwarves are blow sideways, slantways, and wonka-ways.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have plans to mine-out some basic plumbing facilities.
During this time, Spring arrives. I guess that means migrants will come soon...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I notice that now is the time many of my dwarves are grabbing for clothes.
They are wearing slightly-worn stuff, and they're all going for replacements.
Thankfully, I'm ahead-of-the-game in that area, I even have a minor dyeing industry started.
Hey ! I didn't know you could dye silk. Neat.

The dwarves overall seem happy. At least 3 births in the last game-month.
And boy are my nurses happier than ever. That "Finds helping others rewarding" really does
wonders when you have kids stuck in the hospital.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One Hauler-Mason goes moody.
On her way to the Craftsdwarf's workshop, she passes our legendary Stonecrafter.
Guess I'm about to get a second Legendary StoneCrafter...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She goes on to make a claystone ring, which uses up one of my copper bars :(

But things get much better. I finally get what I paid for.

It begins

I have a question on the nature of bridges - Can a retractable bridge be destroyed while it's in its retracted position?

I know they just vanish when not extended, so I'm just wondering if they're still technically 'there' to be interacted with by building destroyers

Dipgold has been exploring the gabbro layers uncovered during the search for magma.

An ambush! Curs-

12 lashers and a war jabber. Walked directly into the row of cage traps, caught 7 of em. Marksdwarves picked off 2, and sent the only 2 melee dwarves out, armored in only copper.

Glad I didn't look away, the other lashers didn't even get an attack off before being decapitated / cut to bits by the lonely meleedwarves.

I'm thinking about making a trap hall to deal with firebreathing dragonmen that are invading. I got my first ambush today; along with a couple thieves, they roasted maybe 3-4 dwarves and about 20 dogs.

We have drained the river and plugged the waterfall. It took 2 years in these aquafier rich hills, but we finally managed to bury the remains of the count's wife and child.
- And then Toady releases the 'don't walk the edge of the waterfall' correction.  >:(   ;)

This is becomming my most mechanical fort yet with lots of powered workflows.

Had a Titan attack my 2-Year old fort yesterday. Even his description stated that he was weak, so i sent out my miserable 5-Man military (3 Melee, one of them even had an Axe and 2 Crossbow Guys without Bolts) out to greet him and see what happens.

Following was a hilarious 10-Minute Benny Hill chase around the whole map which ended when the Axe guy finally managed to get close and slow him down enough for everyone to jump on him. Before that it was a endless list of biting and punching that didnīt do much damage.

Had the follow feature on almost the whole time, i was entertained and had a good laugh :)

In my latest version fort, "Pickdrunken", I am determined to eke out a very simple fort, just farms, basic workshops, and sleeping quarters.  On the surface I've got a walled room, with a locked door, with two "Warrior Monks" in them, whom I've named "Otomo" and "Sanzu".  They will be the first of an order of dwarven fighting monks.  Cool thing is, they both worship the god of fortresses, Duthnur.  I'll only induct dwarves who worship that one.

Currently they are weak, and the only things they've killed are some keas.  But eventually, after years of training, they will master the art of pure unarmed combat, and they will train the next generation, which will obviously train somewhat faster.  The walled surface station is the only thing protecting them, but I hope it is enough.

Latest fort:
Intentions were:
a) don't screw up like last time
b) reach pop cap and isolate after immigration stops (at around 40-50 dwarves, I don't like having more)
c) make a bunch of nice stuff for an adventurer to pick up later...
d) put a bunch of that stuff in lead bins somehow
e) make sure I dismantle all traps before abandoning ;)

Side-intention: End world gen at year 2.

Results of labour:

Over 400 pieces of shiny circus tent material, and still no sign of the hole from whence the entertainment arrives. Stopped digging at this point, enough greed to satisfy me easily with no risk.

There's a 10-dwarf squad for swords and a 10-dwarf squad for hammers. 20/50 of my dwarves are military.

Any immigrants who arrived and I didn't have a plan for were put on the pump operation exercise plan (which also helped gradually identify non-vampires by thirst and hunger). Several legendary pump operators still have no specific career besides hauling. Probably haul faster too...

Weapon/armorsmith just made an artifact iron gauntlet, Trampledringed the Persuader of Stabbing. Now legendary armorsmith, great weaponsmith. Will train in weaponsmithing while circus tent is processed...

Making lead bins... (EDIT: ran out of lead bins, making gold bins. There's lots of gold on this map)

Considering things to make for adventurer besides armor and weapons. Coins, food, booze, crutches, shiny blue clothes, flask, throwables or ammo... (Edit: no coins, as I read they don't cross civilizations too well, rather make some other sellable universal goods)

Considering designing a defensible safehouse for adventurer in this map... A bunker to hole up in, with grinding opportunities (such as a pool) and access to caverns for extra fun...

No legendary beasts can get in, no titans can get in, I'm sealed up, my smith got his mood (which required opening up to grab wool from a killed caravan) so there's no risk of needing outside stuff (anymore). Just have to resist the temptation to open again until all adventurer goods are completed (and traps are removed).

I'll probably build a lever to open the fortress from outside and a separate bridge and lever to close it from inside, just to be a little extra careful.

Edit: Also thinking about drafting my smith to equip her with some of the finest of her own work (of duty) and give her some training in it too to pass the time while more material is wafered.

After cutting down pretty much every tree on the map to feed my hungry forges, I've come to the realization that I'm going to have to dig deeper and power them with magma, I've been looking at minecart designs to bring ores down and crafts/weapons/armor up.

Oh god. please tell me I imagined that.
