My best fortress yet.

Random "deity" diplomat killed a bunch of my military after I mistook it for an enemy. Then it went off to conduct a meeting with my leader at the time. Then it hopped straight into the volcano and never came out.

Went from bronze to steel, dug deep, had 3 close encounters with the local entertainment, each time thinking I had them plugged up.

Then after digging out lots of candy, and processing a bunch of it, my steel-armed legendary squad of 10 swordsdwarves got their hairy arses handed to them by a web-shooting flying titan of immense nastyness. I let the final entertainment out just to end it more quickly. Might have been more fun if my military hadn't ate dirt first and had a chance to kill some more circus performers, who were nowhere near as frighteningly powerful as the titan.

Didn't even get a chance to make some nice armor for an adventurer.

Next time, I shouldn't have half my fortress out in the open. ;) Relying on military failed me severely. Complete isolation would have given me time to better prepare to face fun... Perhaps a long entrance with a repeated volley of high velocity boulder filled lead minecarts. Or candy military...

Never did make use of minecarts. I'd sooner weaponize them than try to figure out how to make them useful for hauling. Wheelbarrows are easier to figure out...

300 candy and not a single piece of armor or weapon made of it... And roughly a hundred clowns and a titan roaming about.

The Rustic RabbitHut

30) Endless Eight The Traders have Arrived !!
31) Spot Checks and Spot Battles

While all the trading has been happening, some other interesting things happened too.

First, I make additional plans to seal off our little home in the caverns.
Most of the walls are done, but there is still lots of work needed to get us away from the surface.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The traders still sit in safety. Most Giant Kea Corpses died in the wilderness biome,
and the only reanimated one is missing its left wing (but it still flies ??)

...

My engraver is bored, so I round up 3 axedwarves, my weaver/spinner, and the engraver.
They charge into one of the holding chambers that is holding a yak-hair thing.
This now-decomissioned containment chamber will make a fine place for 3 speardwarves to practice.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Winter is upon you

But what's more interesting is that a child got stuck in my garbage chute during (de)construction.
The hatch is active ... he-he-he ... So I guess I don't need to rush my medical training pit yet.

I try to get someone to step on the pressure-plate so the child falls into the garbage pit.
But dwarves are stubborn when it comes to burrows.
Eventually, I just order a simulated deconstruction near the pressure plate and that works.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nurse Reimu is on the job !
She's a good nurse. She finds helping others rewarding
The doctor is currently at the party, but the kid'll be fine with just 2 broken legs.

And some nefarious soot makes an appearance outside.

Dipgold is currently living in a state of constant worry. Between the packs of zombie louse and mosquitos, undead harpies have been spotted. Work has begun on a defensible outer wall, in the hopes that it will help keep out the zombies and sieges that are sure to come soon.

No metal besides tetrahedrite and galena have been found, and no bitumnous coal or lignite has been seen - ill omens for a decent military force. We will have to learn to live without the precious steel works, and import what we need. At least copper will make for good traps... which should see their fair share of work soon.

Autumn: First caravan has arrived, and we told the liaison to bring a few cats, dogs, and egg-laying birds next year. We could use the change in diet... bought as much meat and cheese from the caravan as we could, but it won't be enough for two seasons. Plump helmets get old quick, even if they ARE good for our eyes and adapting to the dark inside our little burrow. We bought some sand from them as well, in order to get a head start on some weapon traps.

On the 28th of Granite, our second spring, we receive a migrant wave of 33. They were joined by some rangers who helped fend off some more undead giant mosquitos, and came rushing in our gates to safety. We now have strand extractors, fishers, woodworkers, and even a doctor. Hope they enjoy plump helmets, its the only thing we have in abundance so far.

The Human Village called Band of Seals was butchered by a goblin ambush. Its defenses not yet predpared, an the militia untrained. May they rest in peace.

Always bring at least one trained soldier and a bronze bar for a weapon when playing humans.

It is now late autumn. I am Rere Semacame, commander of the military forces of Seashell; writing this report to explain the deaths of the a trader and 2 of his caravan guard.

With the human siege that arrived about three months ago, we've closed one of our surface access shafts and let the trapped main gate remain open. The humans had superior numbers at about 15 armed and armored soldiers to our 10, 7 with very limited military training so a direct confrontation would be devastating to us. Fortunately the humans were content to sit near the outer edge of our settlement and wait for us to attack. Again, tactically sensible as they didn't know our numbers or our equipment.

Keeping that in mind, I've reported to the Broker and explained trading would be possible with the humans being relatively distant and our soldiers with the caravan guard could hold the humans long enough for the main gate to close. I knew the risks, but we needed those bins of leather we've ordered last year to make backpacks for the military as our limited outdoor access in fear of an ambush prevents hunting. After the trading was done without any issues, I've ordered the military to return to their barracks as the long guard duty was taking it's toll on the morale of our inexperienced soldiers. As we've returned to the barracks the caravan started leaving, and at that moment the humans attacked.

It was over by the time we could make it to the surface, even with the fast access tunnel from our barracks. We saw that the heroic efforts of the caravan guard had the humans routed, and I've sent one squad to chase them, even though they wouldn't be able to catch up to the cowards. My squad and I attended to the wounded, and unfortunately a trader and a guard was dead. Another guard was gravely injured and expired before we could carry him to our hospital.

The lesson we need to learn from this is that we need another entrance that leads underground to a safe location for the caravan to enter and leave in a controlled fashion. These brave traders are our lifeline and we can't afford any security risks, now that we know the enemy has followed us here.

First attempt at moving magma with a minecart.  No ‼FUN‼ yet but a handful of delays.

1. The Minecart only fills with magma if completely submerged, passing under a magmafall won't do it.  This has led me to design an enclosed cart filling chamber controlled by a lever.

2. Dwarves will not push carts through doors, making me replace the door based airlock with a floodgate based one and add an extra lever to the construction.

3. There is a magma crab taking pot shots at anyone in the pump room.  Fortunately noone has gotten hit yet, since the filling chamber is only 2 tiles big and the pump operator only needs to stand there for a couple ticks to completely fill it.  But it's an added level of micromanagement to make sure no operator is in there longer than they need to be.

4. The cart only transports 2/7 magma at a time.  The planned 1x2 target zone completely dries up before the cart even makes it back down to the chamber.  Requiring it to be redesigned.

At this rate I'm actually thinking a pump stack could be quicker.

While gazing over my new village I noticed one of my "Hunters" was flashing, suggesting he was legendary in some skill. Upon closer investigation it turned out he was a Legendary Animal Caretaker... ... wot?

Another interesting event, my bonecrafter created a legendary bone long sword... Well, it might not be a great weapon, but at least whichever soldiers uses it will look menacing.

Well, it took forever, but we got only useful items from the caravan from home, and got rid of the last of the goblinite. Bought every drop of drink, every morsul of food, a few quivers, weapons, backpacks, seeds, sand, chests, extra bags for all the damn longland flour we have (Been farming that stuff for years. Still have enough seeds to keep the plot filled year round, with potash we buy from home magnifying our yeilds in autmun.) and extra barrels. Not that it matters since they'll be used for the endless mountains of cheese and milk our livestock produce. Also foisted all our unneded leather armor on them.

Speaking of which, it's about time to shear the sheep, alpaca, and Llama again. Oh, and Kawe made the most badass native gold cabinet ever made by human hands. Some dwarves might even be envious of it. QUarrying is going well too. Still dunno what I'm going to do with the two rooms I had made down there.

Figured out why the forest burned to the ground last time.

Because it happened again.

So, it turns out my ranger captain was a battlemage, and enjoyed flinging fireballs everywhere whilst hunting. She promptly burned to death in the fire she started. Fucking. Moron.
