Times like these I wish I understood this game (well, not so much as actually being able to play it!)

So many damn things in my fort, including a Troll which was surprisingly easy to take down. Also I wish I read the wiki before attempting to take out the four Draltha's in my fort, with a tiny military, with crap weapons. I go on now wondering why some dorf was immediately killed on contact with one...  "They don't actively seek fights but are huge and able to kill a dwarf with ease, often ripping them in half in the process"

Bollocks. Also my last damn miner fell into a magma pool while channeling for my magma forge/smelter >.>

A vile force of darkness has arrived!

21 pikegoblins led by a giant olm mounted marksgob. Sent the 1st and 2nd squads of the 1st Footmen Company to deal with the threat. If I weren't so sure they thought numbers would mean anything, I'd say they basically sent a meatbag onslaught. Ecen The Flayer made contact first, severing both feet of a pikegoblin before decapitating him. He then bisected another after lopping his weapon hand off, and batted two bolts out of the air all the while.

Next came The Virtuous Haze, who went about her normal routine of removing limbs and then chopping her victim's head open when they passed out. Took a bolt to the chest, but her body armor amazingly did its job for once and deflected it. She then did what I assume was an unintended run into another charging goblin, cause they collided and fell on eachother.

The untitled hammerlords of 2nd squad have taken to strength in numbers, and in silver hammers, opting to isolate and beat down goblins one by one together, compared to the axelords who go for killing multiples of enemies solo.

Ecen got to the marksgob and his mount. Kinda anti climactic cause he one shotted the olm, disarmed (litarally) the goblin, and stomped his head in. The straglers number about 15 pikgoblins, 5 in varying states of injury, and two in various states of missing grasping parts (AKA slowly bleeding to death from having thier arms chopped/stabbed off.)

I dare say that there's a reason humans are always among the most dominant creatures in the game. They can really fuck shit up.

Exciting New Dwarven Construction Follies
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There is no reason he (my expedition leader, btw) should have gotten up there. Never built a path to there. I'm not sure, but I think he might have been constructing a door where those two gaps are.
I've had this happen so many times.

The same thing happened to my fort. Wasnt fast enough to close a gap in a wall to the caverns and a bunch of elk birds slipped through. They arent exactly hostile, but they are damn fast and keep interrupting jobs. So i quickly put my soon-to-be warriors in squad, thinking they'd keep their pick if I activated them right away (yeah, I know they don't - wasn't thinking straight). Well turns out, they weren't all that good at wrestling and soon I had 2 heavily wounded dwarves and neither a hospital nor a well (freezing biome with salt water and I was in the first autuumn) set up. The elk birds kept running up and down my only staircase almost unscathed.
All the while a miner went missing. He was responsible for channeling out a totally safe tile to let the magma into my forge area; for that to do he had to go through the caverns to the magma pipe, unsealing a stairwell which let the elk birds in. I looked all over the place for any clue what had happened to him. I almost finished engraving his slab when I found a lonely iron pick in the channeled out tile... he must have decided to go down the ramp he created as there was nothing else forcing him to stand on this tile or to dodge into it.

Sometimes this game is like watching over a bunch of children with laser rifles... if you don't look for a second they will do something stupid and there will be casualties.

Really? A dwarf just showing up on a z-level he has no access to? Granted, I haven't done a lot of extensive above-ground constructions in a while (most recently I have one fort in 0.31.25 with a large aboveground portion and don't remember dwarves hopping around there) but this one's new to me!

Yeah, most of my forts have large above ground portions and I can't tell you how many times Urist McDumbass got stuck on a roof that had no access. I usually don't notice until I notice they aren't working or they starve to death.

Ramps are your firend in those situations.

News from shockedtowns!
The local armed forces, outnumbered 4:1, with no ranged support, obliterated the attacking forces from abroad, including thier assault team leader and his giant olm! The olm has since been chopped up and is an ingrediant in this fine stew I am  enjoying. No casualties were reported from the 1st Foot Company, and the 'Goblinite' as dwarves call it, is being extracted slowly from the scene of the carnage.

The agressors were left utterly beaten, with no survivors. Oh, and a pair of kobolds got killed by the townwatch and two children passed into adulthood, join the guard soon after.

How did you do your military organization, Splint?

And then did ARMOK say, the east is the holiest of directions, and thou shouldst not stand there lest thou be strucketh down by my holiest of beards. And then did the dorfs did say, we shall build from the west, for more do we fear the beard of ARMOK than the strike of the elephant.

I'm on Operation Natural Carved Stone Fortress Mark IV (or V. Or VII. I forgot how many cave-in accidents I had so far), and things are finally progressing well.

Well, if I don't count the migrant wave that tripled my population, mostly with children, and the giant hornet colony that's been harassing my fortress. Other than that, this thing is finally kind of sort of starting to go well.

How did you do your military organization, Splint?

Squads of 3-5 men drilling constantly, equipped largly with a mix of steel, copper, regular bronze, and bismuth bronze. 1st company defends the surface, and conists of:

1st Squad: 4 halberdiers, 3 of them axelords, the remainder close to it. they're armed with 3 bronze halberds and one bismuth bronze. They lack shields due to thier wepaons being multigrasp, not that it matters. They're armored in a mix of steel, copper, and bismuth bronze.
2nd squad : 3 hammermen, all hero level with legendary fighting and hammering armed with silver war hammers of well to exceptional quality and both types of bronze for shields, with coper armor.
3rd Squad: 4 wrestlers, competant or better, with skilled or better fighting. Armored largly in copper and bronze, with leather helmets and body armor so they'd stop killing eachother in training. They'd be better, but I burned through 3 recruits in the span of month.
4th Squad: 5 men, Elite lashers or close to it. Armored similarly to 2nd squad. Mostly killed thieves and snatchers.
5th Squad: 4 men, two swordmasters. Armed with copper or bronze longswords and armored similarly to 2nd and 4th squads.

while 2nd company defends the caverns. In terms of armor it's a mix of copper and bronze mostly, with lather for the rest that they geared up in on thier own.

1st squad: 4 men, armed with bronze and copper great axes. No shields, not that that matters since there's nothing with a ranged weapon down in the caverns but antmen.
2nd squad: 4 men, all maulers. Armed with silver and bronze mauls. No shields.
3rd Squad: 3 men, armed with two copper scimitars and one steel shortsword. equpped with wood, copper, or bismuth bronze shields.
4th squad: Unformed. Going to have 4 men with a mixture of copper and iron pikes taken from goblins. Armor will be whatever is available.

Townwatch: human equivalent to the fortress guard, led by a Townwatch Commander. 4 men, armed with mostly steel flails and bronze shields. Mostly geared in bismuth bronze and copper with leather gloves. Currently only killed three thieves.

I have no rangers of any sort since I view it as horribly inefficent in terms of raw killing ability and resources used unless it's an oneshot, and when marksgobs attack I use my teeming horde of war dogs as a shield, drawing them in close enough to attack with soldiers. last group that attacked the fort went after  my herd of horses and was promptly jumped by dogs and cut apart by 1st squad, 1st company by itself.

I thought laser rifles weren't accurate enough. Or is that just the stormtrooper training?

Embarking on a new fort, "Riddledlancer." Hopefully I won't abandon this one in disgust after the first year for no discernible reason.
