Spent all day worldgenning a 7X7 evil island embark. Embarked prepared to face the dead, and came face to face with a swarm of badgers right next to the embark raft! This is indeed a terribly evil island! To kill, or not to kill?

The Great Rabbit-Hut

Old Chapters

07) Summer's end barbeque
08) Autumn - Watch for Falling Undead
09) Curse of the GFGHOC

So from last time, there were about 10 GFGHOCs flying around outside.
(Giant Flying Great Horned Owl Corpses)
3 hovering at at center of map, rest are cha-cha-cha-ing around.

Since migrants arrived, I lock the hatch, and make a meeting hall at the corner of the map.
So far, so good, they huddle there.
My plan is to make a sort of underground railroad (figurative) to dig towards the migrants.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

On a side note, am I the only person who is grumbling about the proposed minecart/hauling changes ??

I see that someone left a cow skin in the butcher room.
That will need to be disposed of eventually.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

C'mon Yukari, stop sleeping and start digging that tunnel !!!

...

You know, this fort ain't so bad.
Even though I have 19 undead listed on my "Other Creatures" list, only 1 of them is a "perma-surface" undead.
The rest are either migrating undead wildlife, or locked in my containment kitchens.
I hope that doesn't change ...

Wow.
I got 4 Cow Hair thread from one cow, and that wasn't using any of the raising parts, either.
The secret is to punch a undead hair, they spray into many little hairy parts.
Undeath is sweeet.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...

Yukari decides to go on break just as she is about to start carving the upward stairs for the migrants.

Also, I notice that Kurumu has a bad thought:
"She was forced to talk to somebody annoying lately"
Well, I guess it was bound to happen with my naming system...

The GFGHOC swarm leaves the map, and it is replaced by a singular GFGHOC.
Those are the worst, they zoom around everywhere. It finds the migrants huddled in the corner of the map,
and singles one out for extermination.

The migrant manages to flee close to the entrance hatch.
I take a gamble and open the hatch, conscripting him and hoping he will station into the fort.

Worst mistake ever
The migrant turns and sacrifices himself to the GFGHOC.
His wife, smelling an open path in the air, starts wandering towards the center of the map too.
She dies next.

At that point, I dunno, eventually all the migrants path towards the center of the map, which is now
filling up with dwarf corpses...
!!! Bonus multiplier !!!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...

...

They all died.

...

Their ghosts have finally made it into my fort.
I finally complete the underground railroad (this one is actually underground),
so the undead dwarves start pathing towards my fort too !

Thankfully I got a blocking wall up just in time.
Several corpses jam into the wall (just like you'd expect), their pathing now blocked.

OOC (Out of character)
I am very disheartened right now.
I wanted those migrants to live.
I wanted those miners to dig the staircase upward (they will, but pathing/buggy upward detection delayed it).
I want to sleep in tomorrow and not go to the office at 6:00 am

I'm pretty sure I will keep this fort.
It seems managable, and if I can get the dwarf caravan to come in one of my entrances then I'll be set.

He passed out and an archer shot at his unconcious body until his buddies rescued him. Hands, arms, legs, feet, torso all irrepairably damaged. His entire body is infected and I imagine he's not long for this world, until then I guess he's just rolling around the fortress going to parties.

Wonderful image. I'm sure they all welcome him at the parties too, and he'll make many friends and when he eventually dies will cause a tantrum spiral.

my duches likes shields...

A dwarf has started to work on free communion and artifact ???

On that, with such a large part of my fort being either miners or masons, I'm finding that I actually have a decent success rate in getting useful stuff. Several armor stands, a bed, 2 thrones, a cabinet, a weapon rack and a coffin. If the king gets here he's gonna get one fancy final resting place.

Studying the relations with other cultures.... The elf leader is a queen and she has a goblin daughter? I'm suddenly reminded of threetoes story "snatcher"

I just learnt that Giant Mantises float in the air after death, cheating you of their body.  Argh.

Build a stairs up to it. Or it might simply be lieing on top of a tree, cut it down.

I'm destroying the siege piecemeal. The goblins are morons. There's only 6 left and none of them all has ever made a move towards me. My bridge is down and my marksdwarf squad is outside, shooting at them from the opposite end of the river. Their "leader", a bowgob with a giant bat has already buggered off and so has the majority of gobboes. Only three had been shot and killed, the others ran off after getting some bones chipped and such. Cowards. :P

edit a few hours later: Goblin siege driven off without wounds or loses and the game couldn't accept that so it sent a brush titan. A gigantic three-eyed flycatcher with a short trunk, an austere visage and spraying webs everywhere. It killed a planter, a giant rat pup, a farmer, a child and one of my war giant rats.

On the upside I'll soon have +brush titan silk trousers+ and my own war GCS had been spraying like a loonie as well so I get some silk from that too. Had 762 meat (goblins, in part) before beastie getting butchered so I'll see how much afterwards.

My drawbridge is shut, a Minotaur is outside.  Migrants arrive.

The minotaur goes after the migrants, kills the stonecrafter in a few seconds, then she goes after the thresher... 37 pages of failing to kill the thresher by strangulation later, the thresher regains consciousness, the Minotaur grabs and gets a left mitten. Now the minotaur is trying to beat the thresher to death with the left mitten.

OK, so I open the drawbridge to let the other migrants in, and a cheesemaker decides to go out to help the thresher.  The cheesemaker already has the happy thought for getting someone to a bed, yet they are both still on the run from the minotaur.

I'm not going to send any military yet... too funny.

Play yakety sax on youtube.

Anyway, the stupid birdie has been butchered. 337 meat total and I'm not even done with the damn roc or the bloody goblins! Good thing this meat doesn't have a big value modifier like the roc, easier to sell this way. It's mid-winter so I'll sell it to the elves. He also dropped 222 (or so) bone. And I have a legendary bone crafter and a dire need of bolts. That's a good 600 bolts right there, doubling my stores.

What. The. HFS!

So I embarked in a calm desert with an aquifer but forgot to bring enough stone/wood to use the pump method to get through it. First attempt at the plug method only discovered there was a second level to the aquifer. Some migrants arrive (first wave) from my previous fort that I abandoned after getting bored of the tantrum spiral. All 4 go melancholy or mad. All die. No stone or wood means no way to bury/memorialise them so I just stick them in the pit left by my plug attempt. A little while later ghosts start haunting, so far pretty much normal. A while after that they rise as skeletons. No necromancer spotted and not in an evil biome. Everything gets slaughtered and the settlement has crumbled. Now what caused the sudden zombie apocolypse then?

No necromancer spotted does not mean there are no necromancer, they can come in an ambush-like attack and sneak around nearly undetected, raising every corpse they can see.

If in the embark screen , in the civs listed you had a "tower" , what you saw was very likely one of those necromancers ambush.
