The food production area above the dining hall has been finished, as well as the farms above that and the food storage on the same level as the dining hall. 3 baby jackalopes were washed done the former irrigation shaft when the rain filled the murky pool used to irrigate the new farms. It seems that my decision not to bring a smith at embark was smart, as a weapon smith prodigy arrived in the first migrant wave. The dining hall itself is not finished yet, as the workshops and bedrooms are more important right now. The first pig iron bars were minted today, and steel should be soon to follow. Overall, Chaoscastles is performing wonderfully.
EDIT: Hail Armok! Our first ever thief arrived this winter, and was quickly slaughtered by the brave Nephilim friends of the Assaulted Blanket!

Had two ambushes one after the other right at the gates of my fortress.Repelled both with only a planter dying. The interesting is though i had just equipped my five champions with obsidian swords. One of the goblins when hit exploded into seven different pieces, three of them( parts of his legs and part of an arm) flew 36 tiles away with such speed i was convinced that someone in the melee had a bow or crossbow.Ive seen goblins being knocked back when punched(dislike weapons) but nothing like this.I should mention that im still using an older version of the game.

My Carpenter falls 1-z level after a piece of peat collapses, and damages his lung, and right leg. Thirty seconds later he gets bback up, and goes to work building the wall, thats a dwarf for ya.  :P

Blizzard Man from my last post went down with no problems. A few more have come since then, then went down fine too. The Traders came and they brought some bars, but the Dwarf who had a mood went stark raving mad maybe 20 seconds from when i was gonna start trading, but my migrant Armorer has gotten a mood (possessed, sadly, so no instant legendary Armorer for me D:) and he also wants bars. I used up the only bars i got to make a Metalsmith's Forge for him, but i've got some metal stuff i can melt down, so i'll just get a Wood Furnace and a Smelter built and he should make it through.

My main problem now is the group of Dark Stranglers sieging me. FFUUUUU--

Taking on a "human-style" challenge with the Dig Deeper mod, basically meaning all aboveground buildings, no underground stuff except for mining (ore), mostly wood goods and such.  As a result, my clay village has just finished a 4 level granary/general storehouse as well as almost being done with a two level smelter/kiln workshop.  Hoping that my low wealth level keeps the goblins away for a few years, I want to have the time to build decent houses for everyone.  Also gathering like hell to get some kind of growing stock together for after next year, now that I've brewed all of my plants and eaten through all of the meats (seed + booze roasts anyone?)

"What's the deep dark pit, that turns mining operations to shit?"  "The shaft!"  "You see this shaft is a bad mother--"
"Shut your mouth!"
"But I'm talkin' about the shaft!"
"Then we can dig it."

My weapon smith has been posessed, and is collecting stuff. After my last battle with the goblins i have a fair amount of goblin and ogre corpses. He's going to decorate whatever it is with goblin and ogre bone, amethist and spider silk

After seeing four military dwarves crippled while trying to keep the surrounding wilderness free of caravan-munching wildlife, I have decided that, since it's the caravanners' own choice to venture deep into a cursed forest which is populated by ambulatory, blood-sucking trees just to buy fancy ropes, dealing with said ambulatory, blood-sucking trees is their own freaking responsibility.

Unrelatedly, as much as I'm dreading having to fight off the gobbos using only copper equipment (there's nothing but tetrahedrite here), I'm slightly ashamed that, after almost 5 years, I still haven't made enough sparklies to entice anything other than kobolds. What are you waiting for, gobbos? We've got eleventy-one bazillion -«-pig tail fiber rope-»-s and a full-sized barrel carved from a single ordinary cherry opal, all for the taking! Don't let a few arboreal abominations against nature keep you away!

make some statues with the silver to boost your worth, I'm sure they'll come then. Unless you have a metalsmith like mine that likes to make mastercraft statues of worms

My fort seems to be on break. I have 114 inhabitants and 30 are eating or drinking, 20 are sleeping and 50 are on break/no jobbing

Sorry guys, there is nothing to do. You could all go and train in the militairy, but theres no need to farm, cook, care for animals or... anything really. I still have about 100.000 worth of goods that i want to trade. some construction and some metalworks is all that is happening now.

The only time everyone is at work is when collecting spoils from the last goblin siege

do you guys have any way to deal with this?

and the mayor keeps asking for pewter items...

Actually, that's more-or-less what I did in my last fort. I noticed my productivity was in the crapper, so I overhauled everything and made 20 million in a year.
Then the goblins came. They came hard.
Maybe this time I'll try this "moderation" thing I've been hearing about.

Unfortunately, as much as I'd love to implement your suggestion, my furnace operators are being dicks and refusing to actually generate any silver.

EDIT: Re: Your pewter-luvvin' mayor: Install lever-operated magma trap. Pull the lever. Feel the joy.

A goblin ambush of 4 hammers and 1 lasher came in today. Three hammers and the lasher were all immediately caught by the cage traps I had recently installed just behind my drawbridge. The last one came up to the actual entrance of my fort, apparently traded a few blows with my unarmed militia (who were grabbing real weapons) and started retreating. Naturally, going back the way he came in, he triggered the final remaining cage trap. Now I have five caged goblins in one of my meeting areas.

I found magma! "mayor, yould you inspect this latest trap we developed?"

AND now i can get rid of all the severed body parts in my refuse piles. Goblins sure create a mess when they die in pieces. I'm reconsidering my trap placement, thinking i should use more spiked balls. While the goblins died fine on discs, trolls and ogres more or less ignored them but had their heads caved in a bit further

Oh, right next to the magma is some kind of temple, full of zombies and skeletons. Bad news i guess?

Oh, right next to the magma is some kind of temple, full of zombies and skeletons. Bad news i guess?

Very good news - those are really rare features! There's a very special masterwork weapon in the middle of it if you can get past all of the monsters - it's definitely worth the effort to reach.

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

so, pouring magma into it is maybe not the best solution?

There's probably no way to drain it once it's been poured in. Don't worry about the weapon - it's adamantine, it can take the heat.
