Why do my tantruming dwarves hate war Grizzly Bears?

Now, another peasant is punching a war grizzly bear.

In other news, my mayor was arrested recently for not fulfilling the duke's mandates. I didn't mind too much as she kept demanding things to be made out of adamantine. Once she was locked up, she kept screaming about her missing child.
A goblin siege hit shortly after, resulting in a mad frenzy to see who could collect the most goblin socks. This lead to a lack of free dwarves to bring water to the prisoners; the mayor died of thirst. I could have cared more, but I didn't.
Shortly after I get a message that a baby has died of starvation or something. Mothers should really take better care of their children.

Oh dear, a dwarf is going after one of those tantruming peasants with a steel axe. It is the same dwarf that was arrested for murder earlier. It looks like she is a member of the fortress guard, I should probably take that axe away from her, as she doesn't like to do more work then necessary and the prison chains are pretty far away from the rest of the fortress.

Had a cave crocodile run into my fortress while my military was busy thrashing a groundhog with their training weapons. When it ran into the farm, the pair of giant tigers that were pastured there (brought on embark and trained for war shortly after) casually grabbed it by the head and sent crocodile bits flying everywhere-- just in time to save the farmer from being eaten. Then the female giant tiger gave birth to three cubs.

The giant cats have so far proven to be very effective war animals. Can't wait to catch some giant sabre-toothed tigers (a modded arctic version of the tropical tigers) from the local taiga, since they're slightly bigger still: 2100000 rather than 1900000. Plus, their incisors are enormous, so they can bite through low-grade armor.

I just had a moody miner make a statue of my expedition leader raising the statue SHE made when she was moody.

Yes. An artifact statue of a dwarf raising an artifact statue of a dwarven king. made from the same base material.

It also has an image of an elf being killed by a dwarven adventurer megabeast I modded in, which was also on the last artifact to be made, a pig tail fiber thong, named "Pungentcalm," which is now being worn by it's creator, now dubbed Bikini Babe.
This miner isn't very creative, but he just made a 100% perfect rendition of a statue the last moody dorf made, an exact copy, which is being held up by a perfect statue of the dwarf who made it. AND simultaneously commemorating the death of a foolish elf in 302, exactly as depicted on the front of an artifact thong.

Well, the happy train stops here.

A forgotten beast showed it's ugly head (a gaunt three-eyed shrimp with four short horns, and a mauve exoskeleton) and charged straight into the stairwell before anyone could lock it down. It has noxious secretions, but I absolutely must call on the militia at that point. So the ranger captain goes down, gets tossed off the stairway and breaks some bones, and the beast gores him in the head. Ranger captains seem to be Armok's most hated too, because I appointed a doctor who was also in the sqaud to that position after the beast was killed by a swordsman in the melee squad. The swordsman is just damn fine, but both that doctor and the other medic in the melee squad that took part in the fight have started rotting in the bedroom. Every body part is swollen and rotten. The other doctors haven't gotten a chance to look at them yet, but I'm most concerned by two things: 1) They are generating a huge plume of miasma that isn't helping the mood of the other dorfs in the slightest, and 2) They are likely to die, and since everyone has had so much of a chance to make friends with everyone else, this will almost immediately lead to a catastrophic tantrum spiral after the loss of the first ranger captain.

In the meantime, the other soldiers who I successfully quarantined in the caverns are chilling out (The doctors must have became ill and gone to the bedroom almost immediately), and the two rangers that were locked in there decided to get married. All this socializing has led to quite a bit of loving. I'll probably have to remove them from the military or risk heavy losses in the future, and yet another catastrophic tantrum spiral.

Well, the melee medic has left the beds in good condition after being treated. Now to see how the new ranger captain fairs...

I have all hauling-capable dwarves assigned to dump or melt the random chunks of goblinite around the fortress, leaving no one to harvest the plants from the gardens...

... as a result, all the children in Bootrazors are at least Level 2 Farming because of all the harvesting they've been doing. One is Level 5.

I fear for the state of the Mountainhome. Our latest migrants brought with them a cart which promptly collapsed on the very border of our territory - the wood was found to be rotten to the core, and was destroyed. Seven dwarves in all - a miner, a woodworker, metalsmith, farmer, crafter, ex-axedwarf and doctor - joined our fort this day, but they bear grave news. Our queen is growing weak, and her general is slowly assuming control over the Mountainhome. This apparently started not long after we left to found Trammeledclasped. These seven claimed to be searching for a place to build a new home, but given that their supplies were exhausted and their wagon useless, they were forced to remain here. Many other groups of dwarves have apparently been doing the same - these new citizens expressed recognition of several of our current members; the ex-soldier in particular seemed particularly happy to meet our veteran Stukos Boltedtwigs, apparently having know him at the Mountainhome.

As heartwarming as this may be, that does not change the fact that dwarves would rather spend weeks travelling under the burning sun to reach us than stay under the General's thumb. As an active rebellion could be classified as treason, the most we can do is offer shelter to all who would come our way. I have ordered another expansion to the housing complex - another 180 rooms should be sufficient for a few years at least. The population of our fair home is 283. Seven dwarves have fallen since the founding. We can do naught but pray we lose no more.

Technically, no, but if the (o)rders menu says "all dwarves harvest", it literally means all dwarves will autonomously pick crops, and that includes children. So if nobody else is picking crops, kids will go take care of that.

Technically, no, but if the (o)rders menu says "all dwarves harvest", it literally means all dwarves will autonomously pick crops, and that includes children. So if nobody else is picking crops, kids will go take care of that.
Or, using Dwarf Therapist(under the options menu), you can assign labor to kids. While child soldiers are out of the question, using them as disposable haulers is indeed IN the question.

Just lost about 60% of my fortress' military to one goblin who ran into the fortress, peeked his head into the room my melee guys get stationed in, and ran away.

Cue my entire goddamn army abandoning their posts to chase the bastard out of the front gate and into the waiting arrows of 3 squads of goblin bowmen.  The fortress guard of all squads ended up being the ones to save the day.

I can see soldiers getting overzealous in pursuit, I can't see soldiers getting overzealous in pursuit chasing a single lone enemy out of the gates of their fortress into the bulk of the enemy army.

The goblin peeking his head in to turn and flee out the gate with my guys in pursuit also defies everything I know of sieger AI.  He wasn't fleeing, that same goblin was later found fighting the fortress guard in the workshop district. And it didn't outpace it's squad leader and needed to run back to get back in ranks because it WAS the squad leader.

 It's almost like the AI is...learning.  First decoy tactics....then trap avoidance, then suddenly, BAM!  Goblin Skynet making us all eat nothing but booze roasts and mushrooms.

Amusingly, Dwarf Therapist nags you for cheating if you select that option.

Making steel en masse. Why? I'm using the Civilization Forge, and out of seven neighboring civs, only two are friendly. Not as bad as Fortress Defense I'd imagine, but still, the fact that one are evil dwarves makes me worried I'm not the only civ with steel.

Yes, it is infuriating. And it is rather suggestion than bug so it is absolutely impossible to ask Toady to fix it...

Its the 6th of Timber, 263 in Beardedrings.  This is the 12th year of the Fortress.  After the first two migration waves I sealed off the entrance and called off any future migration.  We've currently  a population of 33, 18 adults and the rest are children.
 
There are now seven couples married, hopefully the start of seven clans that will have their own warrens in the future:
The Blackhollows, the Steelskins, the Rivenoaks, the Netherstones, the Hellforges, the Bloodhands, and the Bronzebeards.

We've managed to wall off the top elevation of the map which includes a large forested area where we keep the tame herds of cougars and racoons.  We've also managed to tap into a volcano for our magma workshops. 

I'm trying not to dig out more than I have to until the existing stone and ore is processed.
