Indeed. I understand nobles are rather noble, despite almost never having noble blood, but seeing someone else with a better room shouldn't cause their brains to implode quite that violently.

You know what else has repeated itself recently? Yet another pet dragon set fire to my fortress and toasted my only stockpile in response to a non-serious threat, taking out the vast majority of my goods. Luckily only two dorfs have died.

Plans for the military have begun to take shape with the arrival of several skilled migrants. The dining hall is complete, although the construction of furniture is expected to take several seasons. The bedrooms have been expanded, and the farms were moved down to freshly irrigated chambers above the dining hall. Several hunters have also arrived.

Dear god! I'm down to 1 FPS with this fire. It's about 2/3s done, but holy crap is it murdering my brand new processor!

I actually got so tired of it to just turn off temperature, and it ended almost instantaneously. I had a good laugh. Never had a grass fire slaughter the FPS quite that heavily. Only reason I can think of is that it's winter in a temperate biome...

First time in a while I've managed to get a fort running properly (after re-reading boatmurdered for inspiration, this one is called Angelknives)

A few have died in ambushes since I'm trying to rely on the military as much as possible over traps, and the military isn't training up at all. Gobbos come pretty often due to my obsessive need to line every hallway with statues.

No alchohol or food problems, just a couple of named giant badgers running around.
And we've got steel. We're swimming in steel and have yet to even hit the first cavern layer because I don't feel prepared.
A lot of dwarves are already starting to get "getting used to tragedy" though. I suppose it'll just help with tantrum spirals, later.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to reproduce the often-reported behavior by which water is alleged to turn salty when it comes in contact with natural terrain in a saltwater biome.  So far two fortresses have had water obstinately remain fresh despite being pumped into bare stone next to a saltwater ocean.  I am starting to wonder if the common understanding of salinity and cisterns is completely wrong.

Abandoned an old fort and have started a new one with the same dwarf kingdom.

The outpost of Usanaban (Murderconstructs) is a few months in without major issues so far.  (Beyond a cat murdering my lone turkey hen when it tried to bite the cat.)

3x3 Embark into a three biome area.

A sloping elevation change from southwest to northeast.  Southwest is higher ground with a temperate area with grass, shrubs, and the only trees on the map.  The higher ground changes to a rocky wasteland of granite pebbles and loam as it descends, and them into a mix of granite pebbles and sandy loam as it bottoms out towards the desert off-map to the east.

Some murky pools amidst the grass for some initial water.  Though the survey indicates that the biomes to the east have aquifers in them.

The expedition is already underground with a dormitory, meeting room, and storage in the soil, sand, and initial stone layer.  The masons are building a small keep for the trade depot on the surface.  The miners are working on a downward exploration shaft and also expanding rooms in the stone layers for more workshops and getting some industry going.   The farmer is gathering plants and also has two small plots of underground plants (plump helmets) going; and a still is under construction.

The miners have found two cavern systems, tetrahedrite, galena, and also two layers containing marble.  Given the depth mined down so far thought is being given to making the current construction preliminary and locating the main residence halls, workshops, etc. deep for this fortress.  Finding a secure water source will be important in making this decision.  (I don't trust caverns as a long-term water source - they get contaminated by FBs too easily.)

The Forgotten Beast Ab Stototste has come! An enormous eyeless crab. It has large mandibles and it undulates rhythmically. Its golden yellow exoskeleton is warty. Beware its noxious secretions!

ANOTHER NOXIOUS SECRETIONS FB? Fudge. Zalisiden looks like it's on its way down... Let's see how the three squads sent to deal with it deal with it...

And its noxious secretions appear to be 'boiling extract' - they boil away a split second after they appear. Bad? Good?

Nevermind, a recruit reached it, fought for a while with it before drowning in the water after he was thrown in. A militia captain showed up and dealt with it further, fell in the water, managed to climb out after Ab died. No symptoms so far- the secretions boiled away as fast as they appeared. Ab seems to have died from boiling itself to death. What a weird FB.

First symptom has shown up, it's extreme drowsiness. Good thing the dwarves fighting it hopped out of the water.

Second symptom too. Numbness- doesn't say where.

Who needs DFhack's clean or magma traps to clear the map of blood stains when a trap immune fire breathing FB shows up and gets in while you aren't paying attention.

Thank Armok I was wise enough to use lead barrels in my booze stockpiles, else this could have been a disaster. As is stands, Izgul did me a favor and improved my framerate dramatically by clearing out useless pets, the largest goblin siege to date, and peasants. Not a single useful dorf was lost, due to some strange twist of fate.

Just finished my first fortress. It was 'fun'.

I started in a peaceful and safe place. I was gradually expanding and nothing bad happened for two or so years. Then I discovered a cave system containing a legendary beast. My small, unexperienced militia was sent into the depths to possibly maybe slightly harm this beast. The first one to arrive was the squad leader, my favourite dwarf, named after myself. About three miner dwarves had already been slain and lay about in various states of brokenness. The squad leader charged the beast alone and got completely ravaged but somehow survived. He crawled away into the cave system with massive injuries. Expecting him to bleed to death, I left him and observed the rest of the militia. Unfortunately, by the time I looked for them they were already in pieces. The legendary beast had flown straight up my staircase and had decimated the dining room. However, the beast had suspiciously died and its body was gone.

And thus began the depression spiral.

As many as 20 dwarves were rampaging at a time in a fortress of complete chaos. The sqaud leader, one of two surviving militia members, was in a bed in the hospital. The chief medical dwarf was diagnosing him, oblivious to the crazy goings on outside. Suddenly the other militia member, a wrestler ran into the room and started punching the squad leader as he lay on the bed. The doctor calmy smashed his fist through the brain of the trained warrior and returned to disgnosing his patient. By now I had decided the fortress was doomed and just watched as the dwarves destroyed themselves. Shortly after this, my farmer-dwarf sprinted into the hospital, punched the doctor through the brain, and ran out. Similar chaotic situations unfolded as my few coffins rapidly filled up. Eventually the squad leader somehow got out of bed despite his devastating injuries, hauled himself downstairs to the dining room and slaughtered every single dwarf in sight before finally succuming to his injuries.

Then, at the most convenient time ever, my first goblin ambush. Nice timing jerks. The gate was closed. By now most dwarves had begun to calm down and my population was down from about 80 to 15. My major production is now coffins. Gradually my dwarves begin to grow dehydrated because I had no well. The gate is opened and the goblins killed (with heavy casualties). I abandon my first fortress.

So my tantruming dwarf is back in the news. This time she just threw a couple of punches at a war grizzly. I was a bit concerned that the bear would rip her apart, but it didn't even try to dodge.
Instead, it looks like it went to the cops, as she now has a 26 day prison sentence.
Unfortunately, the deputy that got the case keeps finding excuses not to lock her up: drinking, sleeping, drinking, eating, drinking, . . .

In more general fortress news, I've, for the first time, allowed my fort to grow to 200 dwarves (203, currently). Despite this, I have 0 idlers, as the dwarves are constantly hauling garbage from the sieges.

The goblins have done their work, albeit with massive casualties.

My framerate went from a merry 80-90 FPS to a comparatively sluggish 40-ish in about half an hour because of all their crap. There aren't any trade caravans to hock it to. All unoccupied dwarfs are being reassigned as woodcutters, wood burners, and furnace operators to melt down and recycle everything they can, and the mechanics are building an atom smasher so I can dispose of the rest.  :-\

Even better, they've recruited my fort's livestock to their cause. Three clutches of bird eggs hatched and six capybara and two dogs gave birth all at more or less the same time. OH GOD WITH THE BABY ANIMALS

Another project for the mechanics is a drawbridge by the back entrance. I'd figured that would be inaccessible enough because of the giant lake by it, but the goblins & trolls simply wait for it to freeze over and then charge across and kill what few civilians I have.

ETA: Dishmab Wirebell is still alive.
