The spinning ({goblin cage (ashen)}) strikes The Cat in the left front leg, shattering the bone!

What?

It looks like one of my dwarves is throwing a tantrum and is throwing things at her pet cats. In this case a cage with a goblin in it.

Her thoughts are troublesome, as they don't seem related to the recent siege in which some dwarfs perished. She has been very unhappy lately.
Enjoyed throwing things.
Admired a fine door.
Dined in a fantastic dining room.
Drunk a wonderful drink.
Comforted by a pet.
Slept in a great bedroom.
Had a nice bath.
Adopted a new pet.
Satisfied with work.
Saw something unpleasant in a cage (probably a toad).
Irritated by the sun.
Nauseated by the sun.
Caught in the rain.
Talked to a child.

EDIT: ok, now she picked up a metal bars bin filled with gold, fine pewter, tin, black bronze, brass, copper, nickel, and three bars of bismuth, and threw it at a child, tearing apart his spine. How do I calm her down?

Mcdwarf; Urist McAngryDwarf is merely experiencing that special time of month.

On that note, quarantine that lunatic immediately, preferably away from her cats so she can't accidentally kill one and go totally berserk. :o
With thoughts like those, an average dwarf would be absolutely ecstatic. 4 minor bad thoughts in a pool of good ones making her very unhappy, enough to start tantruming? Not normal. Has she been possessed by a ghost? You can check in the announcements for a message about a ghost possessing a dwarf.
If not, post her freaking personality profile. :o

recent siege in which some dwarfs perished. She has been very unhappy lately.
... many thoughts...

One thing to check is her relationships (which will also list her pets).  Does she have relationships to recently killed dwarves?  This -should- leave a message in her thoughts, but maybe didn't for whatever reason, or fell off the list from other thoughts?  Would be weird, but would be a way to double check.

Ways to calm her down - Isolation and time are perhaps wise.  Her pets can be pastured away from her (though that risks those who move the critters away) and/or she can be drafted (more bad thoughts in that drafting unless she is already military trained) into her own squad, then ordered with s to move somewhere, which you can then seal.

This is unlikely to calm her, and you have other upset dwarves too?

"therapy time" can be calming, especially if your dwarves are already mostly friends with each other (Making friends is very pleasing, but once made deaths and such cause great unhappiness - if you already let the friendships start why not use them now?)  Don't set any unneccessary new jobs, and turn off whatever labors you can.  Make sure you have just one meeting area, and that a single tile.  Most of your dwarves should cluster there, with "no job", and socialize.  This is very cheery, and groups them close together for mutual defense if that dwarf you want to save does go berserk proper before she calms down.

As my playstyle does permit dwarven friendships to flourish, this method is the fastest means I know to raising the mood in an otherwise "everything is ok, now get over that just-finished tragedy", and usually works well.

If you do not want to allow more friendships, you'll have to find another way to help her 8)

Perhaps waterfalls in the dining room are in order...

My fortress has gone well since the great culling of the starting seven. Well, besides having thieves showing up already. That's actually very troubling...

Well, that was anticlimactic.

I just got my first forgotten beast, at a really bad time too; I was preparing to make an actual entrance into the caverns for my weaver to start collecting silk. So, I mobilize the Halls of Soothing,  my axedorf squad to take out this large, eyeless, web-shooting tick, with the hospital on full standby...HOWEVER!

Didn't even have to use his axe!
On a related note...

I will take great care not to offend that dwarf in the future.

Regarding my tantruming dwarf.

I tried to isolate her by assigning her to a burrow in a tree farm, which are designed to be kept locked. She took her time going to the burrow, stopping off at the booze stockpile and trying to start a fight, which didn't work out because something was inaccessible.
When she finally went to the tree farm, two of her seven children (both legendary due to moods) went with her. As a side note, she is a legendary planter and is married to a legendary weaver. She has 15 pet cats, and no friends. She is a passing acquaintance to a number of children and other planters.

I see no evidence of her being possessed or having relations with the dead.

Her mood has improved lately, it is up to fine, so the crisis is adverted for now. To combat this in the future I have begun construction of a happy room. When completed, it will be a 4x4 room with a platinum road with a decorated masterwork lever in it. Above it will be four pumps in a loop to continually generate mist in the room. Then, when dwarves get unhappy, I can just send the dwarf to repeatedly pull on the happy fun time stick.

Nauseated by the sun.

This. It can easily bring ecstatic dwarf down to content even if many positive thoughts are present.

Crocodile breeding program is exceeding expectations.
« Reply #17002 on: October 29, 2011, 12:58:22 pm »

I started a breeding program of cave crocs, whereby I would dump the hatchlings into a pitted area. I proceeded to employ Ms. Zolak Onestusbub as carekeeper of the crocodiles. That went extremely well, as they were excited to have someone to play with them.  So playful!

I'm adding some mods and stuff. Fortbent (troll mod), Fortress Defense mod, Matrix tileset, and maybe the pony mod. It's been far too long since I've played this game, and I want a proper bloodbath this time.

And there's no bloodbath quite like a cyclops-driven one! :P

Speaking of my mod, I feel content saying I've gotten the Cobald civ to be playable as far as nobles go. You may still have a sudden urge to dump your Regic in the river, but rest assured you can choose a new one at any time, and as long as the original isn't any other sort of noble, their mandates shouldn't result in legal action. Oh, but do be careful about it; cobalds are actually very prone to unhappiness associated with being the Regic. The Regic is usually the first to tantrum from anything, so I'd strongly advise switching them out occasionally just because of that. They actually seem to choose a new Regic rather frequently... No idea why. It isn't seasonal, it's almost bi-monthly, but really quite random. Sometimes they'll elect a new Regic every week, sometimes every year or so. I suspect it's related to the number of friends they have, but even dwarves seem to elect a new mayor annually regardless of relationships.

My cobald fort is pretty much dead, though. Sad really.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH CARNAGE

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Seriously, I have no idea what happened.  I've already lost 25 dwarves, and half my booze is on fire.  Hopefully I can use the many water cannons I just finished to try and contain the blaze.

EDIT:  Well, DF crashed.  It reverted to just before (I think) the fires started, so I now have to try to prevent them.
EDIT2:  I know how the fires started!  The idiot merchants who arrived unloaded their goods into a trade depot still filled with magma.

Started a fortress on a glacier cave, that went straight through 3 levels of ice and into the cavern layer that had 2 magma pools and a nearby water source from the map edge.

I then lost 2 dwarves to wildlife and finaly consolidated my Miner Millita workaround. Now to dig and build a perimiter for my dwarves to survive till aha, deep winter. Least the millatery guys already have 30+ kills each and dont give a damn anymore so it defo will survive so long as i can provide the booze and food.
The place is litterd with crundle, ice wolf and blizzard man corpses EVERYWERE. :/

Back in my favored fortress of Shakenlaws.

Shit went down when it was attacked by cyclopes; an ambush came across the southern bridge and almost snagged themselves a defenseless little girl, who no longer has a family to speak of. Luckily she can run like nobody's mother and even though she was attacked, she only suffered a bruised hand after dodging off a ledge that saved her life. The livestock and about 5-6 of my militia dwarves weren't so lucky. One of their corpses is stuck in the river with no hope of being retrieved. I tried locking the doors but of course I missed one and things got messy. No civies were harmed, luckily.

However, just now a stray lamb died after colliding with an obstacle. Apparently one of the FUCKING GIRAFFES got into my outdoor meeting area and knocked it down into the pit. The militia is certainly taking their time dealing with those bastards.

I need more cage/weapon traps...

I'm preparing to make the Dwarven equivalent of Easter Island.
I'm going to ring my entire embark area with evenly spaced Rose Gold Statues.
Why Rose Gold?
Because my F#!@ing mking has a hard-on for it. And over the years I've made quite a few.

I had my millitary kill horses for practice. You ever seen Keystone Kops? It was like that only with more death and less corny music.
