It happened again! Caves full of giant lizard youngs, what.
So how will you be purging them?
Fire? Cave-ins? Insane, drunken beards frothing at the dwarf with blind fury, blood, and booze?
or something less conventional?

You mean purging of annoying dwarves or goblin prisoners?

Yeah, I will toss them to lizards.
I had it happen with horses. I think it happens when one member of the pack is trapped, and none of the others will leave without it.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Latest fort decimated by a bunch of crundles. My little smiling idiots were being so dumb about it, too.

Not much aside from having my militia squad going around caves and the land killing stuff, the occational fey mood, building projects...

And a Fucking dwarf GHOST!  :o

the reason I somehow now have this ghost is because a recruit had somehow fallen into a pond and drowned. I didn't bury the body because... well, I didn't see the worth in removing the lake just to get a corpse.

a year or two later, and I'm going through my unit list to see what animals to kill, and I find 'undead'.

Investigating this anomoly by looking to the left, I see: "Kib Stizashdumat, Ghostly Recruit"

Wtf? So I go to the location, and it's the guy that drowned in the lake.

I am now attempting to spill the lake so I can alow the ghost to exit, to bury what's left of his body, and loot the rest.
You could just engrave a memorial.

Your idea sounds more dwarfy though.

In my opinion, the only time you should engrave a memorial instead of burying the body is when it was a large (say 20-50) amount of military forces gave their lives in the service of their fortress, and it is simply not practical in any way to force your mason workshops to spend 30+ minutes simply to make enough coffins to house all the dwarves.

After Lullgilt was decimated, I had and quickly lost interest after a building error Bronzewhat'sitname, and now embarked on a new world, The Realm of Soul. Departing from The Bodices of God, the group The Carnal Rag who have halted in The Land of Inch to strike the earth for the creation of Mightycity. This is quite possibly the best random grouping of names I've come across yet.

Wallblazed is suffering from a severe and sudden loss of FPS... and now is crashing moments after load. I fear I am going to have to abandon it.
My first fully successful Fortress. I feel like its the end of something... its the fort where I went from quailing in fear before the smallest of goblins, to luring in FBs for more slaughter.

Next fort? Shall be run by a mad engineer. LET THE !!SCIENCE!! BEGIN

My FPS is oscillating between 17 and 19, whether or not I have the waterfall switched on.  Or the mega-pump stack.  Or the many volcano-draining magma traps.  It's likely because my fortress population is over 150, with nearly another 50 pets, and some miscellaneous tame animals.  Oh, and the fact that I have all three cavern layers (and the circus) visible (though opening those had no impact on my framerate whatsoever), and that my embark spans around thirty z-levels, with no logical arrangement to the many tunnels and paths through it..

Busy year 1061 in Windmirrors so far.  (12th year since founding in 1050.)

First level of obsidian has been cast for the Central Keep.  Waiting for some water to drain and evaporate being before starting level two.  Casting was interrupted by an attack by a dragon.  He was decapitated by an iron great axe in a weapon trap.  The butcher is processing the meat right now and the skull will be mounted as a trophy in the Mechanic's Hall.

A human diplomat turned up being chased by a goblin siege.  Three infantry squads and two squads of trolls.  Traps and militia squads did them all in except for one squad leader and 3-4 other goblins who ran at an opportune moment.  Clean-up is underway in three access tunnels.

And the fortress got two legendary weapon smiths at once.  The one training up who has been making the militia's weapons hit legendary.  And one of the marksdwarves got a mood and made a 1.2M db adamantine spear.  I wonder if I was supposed to have used it on the dragon...  (But of course my militia is actually already equipped with candy weapons.  I guess I can work on making them all masterpiece work... once I get the "named" bronze weapons away from the militia.)

... When nobles start jailing valuable dwarves for stupid reasons, they start dieing. ...

I pick my Mayors now based on exactly one thing.  What they like.  In particular, the second field in the list of likes, (typically a metal) and that the list is less than ~6 items, all of which are uncraftable, ideally.

Silver tends to work out best, I find.  Four items on the like list? Even better!

My current mayor reads as:
" likes puddingstone, silver, black zircon, cavies for their three toes, bronze colossuses for their height, and bloated tubers for their stout shape. "

Last mayor was...

" likes sandstone, copper, carnelian, wagon wood, and the color silver "

That was the winning ticket for that fort.  Copper statues, enjoy!

...

8th galena 153 - started digging out the Sheriff's apartment (bedroom, dining room, office), and the enrtrance of the holding cells.
15th galena 153 - the Forgotten Beast Arod has come! A great one-eyed tarantula. It has four long spiral horns and it has a gaunt appearance. Its dark indigo exoskeleton is warty. Beware its poisonous bite! He is in the first cavern.
18th galena 153 - The human caracan has arrived. I'm trading all their sand and logs for a few mechanisms.
25th galena 153 - An ambush! Curse them! A few speargoblins with a macegoblin leader. The caravan left everything in the outside depot, and i had already brought out my goods. Human Crossbowguard down, Spearguard made them running. Also: The Forgotten Beast Omethu has come! A great scaly theropod. It has large mandibles and it squirms and fidgets. Its slate gray scales are round and close-set. Beware its deadly spittle! This one is in the second cavern. Busy day.
26th galena 153 - Merchants dead. Spearguard ran away. Goblins sustained heavy injuries, and leaving for the borders. Forbade the whole depot.
3rd limestone 153 - Omethu found the amphidian people's camp. He left no survivors, he is bruised all over though. Started smoothing the sheriff's place.

Only two dwarves were left after a large group of ambushers that I had forgotten to prepare a military for.
The next two seasons were spent with one dwarf building coffins and the other, the mayor, holding negotiations with a blind cave ogre that had managed to find its way into his room.
On the third season after the wholesale slaughter of my fortress a couple migrants arrived to find piles of corpses sitting on the doorstep and a single half mad dwarf building coffins.
God I love this game.
