Heh. I know how that feels. My old fortress of Tombworships was constantly under siege from between 2 and 4 different civs on a given season. The dodge-pit trap couldn't be cleaned fast enough, the soldiers were dying in droves to ogre and troll troops between half and doubly well armed as they, and utterly enormous, despite being legendary and provided masterwork steel gear, and I hadn't seen a caravan in what seemed like decades. I even tried to just use the doomsday device to end it all, but the damn game was crashing too regularly at that point to even get the last lever linked and pulled. I just gave up and had to delete the save.

My current fortress hasn't seen goblin one, nor any other hostile civs besides the humans whose town we settled upon. :P

My current project is figuring out how im going to link the magma pump stack to it's power train. I also need to breach the aquifer again to give it an exit point onto the surface. Then design the dwarven land mines.

I made lye for soap. Quite a lot of lye for quite a lot of soap, but both those amounts utterly dwarfed by the amount of fat and tallow I have. Problem is that practically ALL my lye buckets have water in them. Fuu.

Had a little ambush recently. I saw them when they were at the front door, so didnt had time to properly set up defense and just ordered the civilian in and the militia out.

Turned out one of the dwarves in the pasture behind the door was an undercover swordsman shearing sheeps on his free time. His name is Kib Lidodath (or something), remember it. Which got him to run straight to the goblins while the rest of the squad was just leaving the barracks.

Luckily, it turned out an other shearer was an undercover militiadwarf (something strange here?).

Both of them being quite skilled warriors in steel gear, they dispatched the few goblins easily, with Kib sustaining heavy injuries.

But it's ok I guess, I got a big hospital set up with a 6-strong medical team with all but medical labors disabled.

One of them came to pick up the other militiaman, but I can't find Kib in the hospital. Oh I see, he fell unconscious on the cage traps. Ok, he must be in the goblin storage room.

No, no sign of him there. Hmm.

No sign of him anywhere?

Finally found out he was...In the dump. The atom-smashing dump. I guess they dump cages because of the order "dwarves dump other) in the "o" "refuse" section.

Luckily I didn't smashed the trash meanwhile. Luckily?Hmm...

I unforbid the cage, build a dwarf cage, release the dwarf. After some terrifyingly long minutes, someone finally arrive to pick up the hungry, thirsthy, wounded dwarf and bring him to the hospital.

They give him food and water, diagnose, clean, and patch him, now he's safely resting on the surgeon's table and it's allright.

Or it could have been. A mandate for the mayor have expired: he had asked for some crystal glass item but I never made any and coulndt figure out in time how to.

And, you guess it, who's the best glassmaker of the fortress? Kib Lidosomething obviously.

The sheriff arrives, grab the uncounscious dwarf on the surgeon table and brings him to jail.

He didnt regained consciousness before he died from infection.
Wounded on the battlefield to protect the fortress, he was trapped, dumped in the trash, and jailed to death.
I'm a bit shocked. This is the most horrible story that arrived to a single dwarf in any of my fortresses.

Time to atom-smash the mayor.

When nobles start jailing valuable dwarves for stupid reasons, they start dieing.

So, naturally, because they never learn and think they're kings of the world, nobles have a very high death rate in my fortresses.

If your map freezes in the winter, you could leave the lye buckets outside and then dump the ice inside them when it freezes.

It doesn't. :P Thanks for the tip though.

Also, it seems war rutherers are kinda decent against goblins who lost some gear. Or maybe good against fully equipped goblins as well.

No natural weapons are really that effective against armored sentients, save a few animals. Rutherers might actually be big enough to beat them, but I doubt it.

Well I've seen Rutherers grab goblins by the upper body or the head and then shake them until they stop squealing.

Kobold thief jumped at woodcutter, stabbed him to heart, stabbed (at leg) another woodcutter, strangled a war dog and ran away.

Goddamn ninjas.

Succumbed to invasion. Most advanced and oldest fort I ever had. I had made some stupid defensive choices but my dwarfs were stupider yet.

This was a vicious siege, I raise the bridge, muster the troops blabla. Oh. That door won't shut anymore because there's a stone lying there. Why is there a stone lying there? Nobody wants to dump it? oh well, doesn't matter much, being the only available entrance anymore. Great.
This, and rodent remains/dropped clothes my dwarves won't dump, is why I -always- build an entrance hallway with 2 sets of doors (the main front doors, a hallway then another set of doors into the main fortress). If one is jammed the others can still be locked.

Good point. It was technically just the first of two doors as well, but, foolishly, I never replaced the second door. Which is/now was wooden. It was in a glacier so I had built my then front door before I even struck any stone. I had a wooden door, they had trolls.

I'll avoid this situation next time. I hope.

Had to forge about 10 more sets of steel armor. While we were trapped inside due to the impossible odds against the centaur siege (10 dwarves vs. 70 centaurs? No thanks...) we had a LOT of thieves take pieces of armor lying out there. If you combined the remaining suits, you would have maybe 2 full sets and a mountain of mismatched parts.

EDIT: Got most of my military back together, gathered most of the bodies from outside and got the armor reforged. Next on the list is-

So much has happened in so little time, at the start of Coalvirgin's 4th year. A Desert Titan made of mud was quickly dispatched, and made the world go into the Age of Legends. I started working on my "train up useless migrants to be weaponsmiths moodable" project, and right after a peasant turned into a weaponsmith, he moods and claims a Magma Forge. He grabs a single gold bar and makes Sunssevers the Strange Organization, a gold war hammer than menaces with spikes of gold. I think I'll let my militia commander have it, and keep the rest of the squad as axedwarves

A red dragon came and started trashing the aboveground area. I sent out my military, some moron rushed out ahead and got minced. The rest of the team caught up and beat it to a pulp, the killing blow being a shield to the right rear leg. The Militia Captain, the person using said shield, bestowed a name upon it, "Vir Ber" or "The Star of Earth."

What good is a named object aside from something to steal and put in a display case to keep it safe forever?

This is not overcrowding, I swear!

Ok, technically they're all just removing the block floor so the engravers can make it worth more, but I couldn't resist taking the picture.
