Had a little ambush recently. I saw them when they were at the front door, so didnt had time to properly set up defense and just ordered the civilian in and the militia out.

Turned out one of the dwarves in the pasture behind the door was an undercover swordsman shearing sheeps on his free time. His name is Kib Lidodath (or something), remember it. Which got him to run straight to the goblins while the rest of the squad was just leaving the barracks.

Luckily, it turned out an other shearer was an undercover militiadwarf (something strange here?).

Both of them being quite skilled warriors in steel gear, they dispatched the few goblins easily, with Kib sustaining heavy injuries.

But it's ok I guess, I got a big hospital set up with a 6-strong medical team with all but medical labors disabled.

One of them came to pick up the other militiaman, but I can't find Kib in the hospital. Oh I see, he fell unconscious on the cage traps. Ok, he must be in the goblin storage room.

No, no sign of him there. Hmm.

No sign of him anywhere?

Finally found out he was...In the dump. The atom-smashing dump. I guess they dump cages because of the order "dwarves dump other) in the "o" "refuse" section.

Luckily I didn't smashed the trash meanwhile. Luckily?Hmm...

I unforbid the cage, build a dwarf cage, release the dwarf. After some terrifyingly long minutes, someone finally arrive to pick up the hungry, thirsthy, wounded dwarf and bring him to the hospital.

They give him food and water, diagnose, clean, and patch him, now he's safely resting on the surgeon's table and it's allright.

Or it could have been. A mandate for the mayor have expired: he had asked for some crystal glass item but I never made any and coulndt figure out in time how to.

And, you guess it, who's the best glassmaker of the fortress? Kib Lidosomething obviously.

The sheriff arrives, grab the uncounscious dwarf on the surgeon table and brings him to jail.

He didnt regained consciousness before he died from infection.
Wounded on the battlefield to protect the fortress, he was trapped, dumped in the trash, and jailed to death.
I'm a bit shocked. This is the most horrible story that arrived to a single dwarf in any of my fortresses.

Abandoned my fortress. Things were a little too easy, my soldiers were getting fat and my engineers bored, time for a coastal embark! Not faced the engineering challenge of aquifers, desalination or experienced ocean waves before.
The fort I mentioned previously (where I rushed the siege with a bunch of hastily drafted civvies) is a costal desert. It has been my biggest and most successful fort to date, and if I were any use at building a military it would surely have survived even longer. I actually managed to find a small hole in the aquifier - most of the underground is conglomerate and mudstone, but there are also sections of jet and on one level just above where it would normally fill with water I managed to find a load of jet - of course, jet doesn't hold an aquifier. Although just as I managed to get through, the siege happened, so now I have to try and control the tantrum spiral if I want to utilise the newfound access to resources. I was also in the middle of building a freshwater cistern and artificial stream to power a water-wheel. Prior to this my injured dwarves were being given water straight from the aquifier (via a hastily dug well) which was no doubt full of salt so I thought I'd better fix that.

Although I was quite surprised  with how smoothly things went from the beginning. It helped that I was able to strip-mine large amounts of conglomerate from the beach to build everything at the start (since there were no trees). I'm not sure if that's a normal experience for coastal maps or whether I just got lucky with that particular embark.

But you never see a movie where a terrible coal plant accident causes a horrible devastation, do you? Nope, everyone seems to think that nuclear plants get their energy by smacking live atomic warheads all day or something.

I had to release my prisoner because he was dying of thirst and I considered that disproportionate to his 'crime' of not being able to make electrum items for my baroness. He got beat up while guzzling down wine from a pot. Drinking takes long, though. Kinda funny that he was still wearing the chain.

God DAMN. My baroness was outside drinking elf-booze which no-one had bothered to bring in yet (after the elves in question had been killed by Goblins) and she spotted an ambush. The crossbowgoblin leading it shot and missed, then I quickly drafted the baroness in my captain of the guard's squad (which consisted only of the captain) and ordered them to the baronial chambers but the baroness was shot. In the middle spine. So I worried they took her nervous tissue out but it seems only a tendon was torn.
She gave in to pain while pikegoblins are approaching.

She's been killed. As a recruit.
One of her war dogs, Sodel Zonrul attacked the pikegoblin that killed her but the goblin STABBED ITS HEAD OFF.
Thikut Avuzan, her other war dog, was killed as well. A human caravan arrived on the other side of the map but I wouldn't be surprised if they'll wind up dead as well.

Another squad of Goblins appeared, these are bowmen. One of them is duelling a human bowman, the pikegob-squad seems to be mostly dead.
The crossbowgoblin had a dwarf tooth crown but is now quite dead.

last edit; they are all dead. Even the third squad that appeared, hammers with one spear. They killed only one suicidal 'swordsdwarf' who was supposed to be marksdwarfing about from my walls but charged wearing no armour at all, the baroness, and some dogs and wolfs.

Succumbed to invasion. Most advanced and oldest fort I ever had. I had made some stupid defensive choices but my dwarfs were stupider yet.

This was a vicious siege, I raise the bridge, muster the troops blabla. Oh. That door won't shut anymore because there's a stone lying there. Why is there a stone lying there? Nobody wants to dump it? oh well, doesn't matter much, being the only available entrance anymore. Great.

Fuckers.

Legendary fighter, high level swordsdwarf with 13 kills! Last siege he was stuck doing nothing in the storehouses, but this time he'll help! He rushed up dozens of stairs, stepped through aforementioned doors, got hit by three dwarfs and behaved like an enormous puss, passed out on the snow and pretended to be unconcious. Right up until a goblin spearman dispatched him with a single stab to the face. An experienced war-hero. Fuuuu.

And he did this when three adequate/competent fighters hurled themselves into martial trances and started wrestling trolls! One of them was an axedwarf who didn't bring an axe and he battered a troll into submission with his shield! Ofcourse he couldn't do much against the 14 goblin archers standing close by but atleast he bloody well tried.

Vanquished in the late winter of 30, 4 years after initial settlement.

This, and rodent remains/dropped clothes my dwarves won't dump, is why I -always- build an entrance hallway with 2 sets of doors (the main front doors, a hallway then another set of doors into the main fortress). If one is jammed the others can still be locked.

A hill titan has showed up here at Rhythmicbowels.
It has killed my hunter and his dog, started a forest fire that is spreading across the entire map and is now chasing a cat.
And I have only one lone marksdwarf to fire at it from the relative safety of the battlements.

20th of Felsite, 256

Log of Sakzul Likotgemsit, Soldier Commander

Today... Today we lost Bomrek. He was one of our best soldiers, and has been with us ever since we created the military here at Whiplast. The Illithids came, 15 or 20 of them. Bomrek charged them and crashed right into the middle of the siege. He brought down atleast 5, but then he got injected with the nasty toxin those foul creatures carry. He then had his head caved with a fleshwarped mace, it was a horrid sight.

19th of Galena, 256

Log of Sakzul Likotgemsit, Soldier Commander, this log appears it has been written with extreme haste, is soaked with tears and some minor blood stains.

ARMOK! WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME?! A week ago we got a beastman siege, over 50 of them! They killed 5 of our men! Now there's a lizardfolk siege today! And a centaur siege! AND A DEMON SIEGE! Why have you cursed us?! WHAT DID WE DO?!

((OOC: Seriously, a beastman siege came and killed a bunch of my men, then a lizardfolk siege came. Then a centaur siege. Then a demon siege. All of them are coming towards us now... Hopefully they aren't friends.))
