Got my magma workshops up and running.

Completely coincidentally, all my dwarves are now legendary pump operators.

Why is my fortress on fire again?

A forgotten beast decided to try to smash its way up through my magma pumps. It got halfway up, and then I saw it swimming around in one of my magma reservoirs... and then shortly afterward, on my units list as "Deceased". Well, I guess it didn't find that to be such a great idea after all, hehe.

Umomngalak has been founded!  A 16x2 embark with an insanely steep mountain, a brook that carves off a corner of it, three total biomes, no aquifers to be found, and layers upon layers of glorious marble.  I've never seen so much flux... now if only I could find some Iron.

Things are going well here -- we haven't even seen our second spring, but food and booze production is on-line and we're mining out housing for the masses.  We even have a legendary miner and (unrelated to that) our first artifact -- a perfect gem!  normally, I'd be upset, but once I figure out how to move that exact gem somewhere, I have plans for it, and up to six others like it.  Sadly, I don't think you can dump artifacts, or it would be a piece of cake.

The long walk between critical sections of the fortress IS an issue, but since housing is being built off the middle of the otherwise problematic road, these walks will start to get a lot less annoying  In fact, once the stockpiles over by the farms are cleared of stone, the masses should no longer need to commute quite so often.  Bed production could stand to be sped up -- lazy carpenters would rather dump stone rather than make bed/r.

Unfortunately, work on the artificial lake(s), the Great Chasm, the Grand Hall, the Tower, and the Throneroom haven't even remotely begun, nor have the mines breached our cavern, much less Magma for a metal industry, and most of the z-levels on which we mean to build the fortress proper have nothing but a stairwell and landing.  Similarly, no progress has been made towards the west, leaving us with our eastern gate as the only entrance.  On the plus side, that means we don't have to deal with two fronts if an early ambush comes.

Meanwhile, Ironbear has tickets to the Circus... it's time to see some clowns.

I have un-earthed Dike-Faith!!!

The food stocks are growing quickly due to the *suprisingly rewarding* fishing industry on the brook of my site. Combine the 101 fish with 69 prepared meals made from flour, meat, other fish, and CHEESE imported half from the first year's dwarf caravan. Those prepared meals, POP!!! They're going to the capital of The Polished Lantern. Fish for dinner!!!

Oh, and the drink supply is trickling up from the 20 digits to about 60-somethin', barely enough to sustain the population of 54.

Relocating the WHOLE FORTRESS to below the ground, using my trade depot mound as the entrance. Profit from digging and crafting has been VERY LITTLE due to previous above-ground goal, so the entire population of dwarfs and non-grazing animals is going underground.

I'm still struggling with a military, primarily due to the fact that LOTS of copper/silver and iron ore has been mined out, and not enough coal was refined.

Some migrants have arrived.

Welcome, one and all! You came at the perfect time. Social destabilization from recent alligator rampages is tearing the fort apart, half the fortress is flooding due to a bearded-up dam project, if you pardon the language, a lack of alcohol is driving some to the brink of insanity, our military has dropped dead and on top of that WE RAN OUT OF TURTLES! I hope you enjoy your stay! *slams the door to a bunker and locks it*

I am about to place my 200 dwarves in their bedrooms, alone. Then, I'll pull a lever and release one wolf in every single room.

Only the worthy will survive.

I did a spit-take at that.

Also, I'm just about to get my fort stabilized so I can sort out jobs, dedicate dorfs to their duties and begin arming a military. I've got logs to last me 3 years, and fully interior pens and farms so I'm going to just raise a drawbridge and not come out til I'm good and freaking ready.

I like that very much.  You have 200 wolves?

On a related note, I was doing the "recruits with training swords vs unarmed gobbos/trolls" thing again.  The last troll took them so long to kill, most of them dehydrated before it was done.

All my dead dorfs until now were miners encased in "cooling magma".
Oh, and there also was that guy who fell down the volcano and noticed part of a cavern.
I'm a little surprised we managed to recover one corpse.
In other news, I've started a slab industry. And a pick industry.

It's quite the old fortress and I have been capturing wolves since the beginning.

On a related note, about half of my dwarves (I did'nt count yet) have survived, but some of them are going to die in the following days (my doctor didn't make it). That was entertaining. They will live in the obsidian tower above ground. The migrants will live in the old fort, until I reach the population cap. I will do the trial for these migrants, and the survivors will live in the obsidian tower. Eventually, I will have 200 dwarves in that tower.
