Animals, yay yay. They are fighting eachother in Pasture. Decided to cage them. Cage them all. Opening cage assign menu. Scrolling up...
Goat, Donkey, Duck, Giant Cave Spider, Giant Cave spider, Hen, Dog, Kitten...
Wait, what? Giant Cave Spider?
Where did that came from? And its tame...

Urdim Roofdecent/Urdim Cilothbethad has gone berserk! No one cares as long as he doesn't hurt anyone, he was a useless fish dissector. I've never had a dwarf berserk before, so this should be interesting.

Also, i was pleased to see a figurine of an artifact of Murakgoden show up in Zalisiden. 'On the item is an image of Meng Oarsounded the adamantine chain leggings in kaolinite'. :D

I've decided to set up a slum away from the fort for all the migrants while my starting 7 get on with their lives.
There is plenty of food and booze to go around, a small green glass lean-to for sleeping on the sand, and they're free to take all the bones they want from the butcher shop.

And the lucky few that arrived with some military skill may get inducted into the foreign legion where my militia commander will train them as cannon fodder.

Run. I've had a berserk Mason one-shot a Farmer. The farmer was sleeping at the time, though.

I had dropped some twenty children down a death shaft. I've great news.
To bad you can't planepack a fell mood artifact with all your dwarf children ive got 70 of the useless buggers out of 300 dwarfs

my dwarves just got done putting the dead ones into their coffins. I'm a terrible person; isn't it great?
You bury your dead and this makes you a terrible person?
I just Dump them outside so they don't stink up the place. Hmm, if rumors of incoming necromancers who will zombify the dead are true, perhaps I should build repeating spike traps beneath the cliff I throw the dead over.

I've just looked at a soldier that chased a wounded goblin into open terrain expecting her to die filled with arrows, fully kitted out in high quality steel, and expert in combat skills, but there's only so much all that can do against a squad of bowmen, especially when using a civ that doesn't use shields.

She batted 6 arrows out of the air in the space of 3 ticks like some kind of lizard Jedi, while decapitating an enemy axeman and went into a martial trance.  Half of the enemy army broke ranks and ran for their lives before she even got within 10 tiles of them.

Yea, I think if I saw some seemingly immortal supersoldier encased in steel that just sent the squad pointman's head flying 30 feet in the opposite direction of his body, I would get the hell out of there too.

TBH I'd only be worried if they were crossbowgoblins, rather than archers. Regular archers tend not to do much.

It finally happened.  Kogan Mondushorast is dead after 38 years of rule as mayor of Hallhealer...this fortress, as frightening and unimaginable as it might seem has seen stability and growth for that entire period and a fully functional government.  Like previously mentioned, dwarves have human lifespans for flavor reasons so they live to 60-120 years of age; there have been children born who will actually die peacefully of old age.

I think this is actually the dwarven afterlife.

Year 6 in Windmirrors going well.  Cavern surveying going well, a fourth candy spire found (and a tall one compared to the others), and some more traps installed in a few of the access tunnels.

The autumn dwarf caravan shows up in the west edge and starts northeast towards the closest entrance.  Right when the first merchant reaches the entrance the vile force of darkness arrives to spread chaos.   :o

Five squads of goblins (crossbow, archer, spear, mace, and hammer/maul) and a squad of trolls.  All of them turn up along the west edge, or the western part of the north and south edge.   And they are led by the "master" of the goblin civ.  They proceed to swarm over the exposed merchants and their pack horses.  The caravan guards put up some resistance but only kill a few goblins before being slain.  Three merchants who have gotten in the gate opt to go back out for some reason - and a fourth gets locked in to prevent his suicide as well.  These merchants are pursued eastward and cut down to the north of the main walls.   :(

In the meantime the militia is called in from the barracks and massed near the west entrance gate, which is now closed.

Some of the pursuit and assault has carried into the north access tunnel.  A troll, a few goblins, and a dwarf caravan guard are all currently melting in magma due to a dodge-me trap.  More trolls, goblin, and the "master" are coming into the tunnel as well.  The squads of archers and crossbow goblins are coming up from the southwest.  I figure the traps will handle them for the most part - and the lever spikes will get the trolls that get past the magma.

Enter would-be dwarven hero, Kol Arbankikrost.  Militia captain, master sword dwarf, too good-looking to wear a helm.   ???

Disobeying an explicit order to take his squad to the West Gate Kol has decided to play "Horatio at the bridge" to an entire goblin siege.  So he starts taking on the trolls leading the attack as they cross the bridge over the magma.  Smoke fills the tunnel from the bodies and gear burning below.  Two trolls go down before his blade, as does the first mace goblin attempting to advance.

Reinforcements are sent for, and the level pulled to cover the magma.  Before this happens however, Kol notes the goblins wavering and goes on the offensive.  He charges across the bridge and engages the goblins there.  Bypassing the wounded "master" and others he emerges onto the surface in the midst of the remains of a goblin squad.  Entering a martial trance he avoids wounds and dispatches a third troll, and two more goblins.

Ignoring a second (and third) order to withdraw and await help Kol then proceeds south to attack another goblin squad.  Two squads of dwarves in the tunnel kill the goblin wounded as they come up and decapitate the "master".  And the two goblin archer squads to the southwest have opted to retreat themselves.

However, the remaining squad is led by a goblin elite archer.  As Kol advances he comes under fire and the hammer goblins form up to protect their leader.  Kol tears into the squad attempting to get to the archer.

More goblins die to Kol's blade.  Then disaster strikes as a arrow fired from flank hits Kol in the arm forcing him to drop the sword.  While temporarily incapacitated a goblin caves in his skull with a maul.  (Oh, if you had remembered to wear your helm brave Kol!)
 
The militia arrives and finish off the goblins, but not before the elite archer puts a few arrows in the remaining merchant and his guard as they leave via the same tunnel.

Now comes the cleanup.  Caravan materials spread all over.  Weapons and armor to recover.  And fifteen dwarves to bury*.


* - Fourteen actually since one was melted in magma.  Kol will get a more fitting permanent resting place constructed.

How are you? I hope this letter finds you well and without any festering wounds. (Though seeing as the mountainhome has all the good surgeons, that seems unlikely. Send one our way, please.)

Life here in Crazeddoors is hardscrabble and rainy. Although settling at the top of the volcano that rests in the side of this ore-rich mountain has supplied us with a steady stream of armour for our militia, we have to make stupidly long treks down the side of the mountain if we want any wood. So too have we been forced to dig a long tunnel down to the soil levels to construct a farm of any respectable size (my initial plan to make a 2x1 farm in the peat at the mountaintop and "hope for the best" was quickly met with boos and jeers). So far there's only been a dark strangler attack, and although they didn't manage to kill any of them, our militia certainly sent them packing. Fine lads and lasses, those. We look forward to capturing some tougher opponents to train them on.

One of our metalsmiths made an artifact copper drum and is now a legendary metalcrafter. Not much use, that, but oh well.

Digging down to the caverns is gonna be hell in a handbasket. We'll have to tunnel down through the mountain first, and then who-knows-how-many urists below the soil level to breach the first cavern, so we've put the "catching a giant cave spider and sending it home as a gift to the queen" idea on the backburner for now.

There's also the problem that we don't have any readily available water. Sure there's some murky pools at the foot of the mountain, but getting it all the way up here in case of an alcohol shortage or any possible wounded that need cleaning is going to be troublesome. Ilral, our mason and architect, has drawn up some plans for a structure overhanging the side of the mountain with a well at the end, hanging high above a murky pool. She cheerily admitted that we'd "need a really long chain". Well, there's enough stone here to kill a million goblins with, as the ol' saying goes, so I'm considering it.

Oh. As I'm writing this, our other metalsmith just got possessed. We won't get a legendary anything out of it, but I'm hoping he makes some kind of snazzy spear or sword. And that he doesn't need any shells. Eesh.

We've also considered setting up a floodgate that, when opened, would send waves of magma rolling down the side of the mountain to torch anything below. It'd also serve as a handy after-siege garbage clean-up.

I wonder if I can hit that goat on the mountainside with my pickaxe...not a lot of minin' to do.

Anyway, that's how things're going here. Nothing too exciting. We've finished dumping all the microcline into the volcano.

Then they came. Dammit, just PUNCH the things, stop spamming with job cancellations because you won't punch the darn things in the face! Darn underground-dwelling people don't have to worry about this kind of thing!

Humans & Elves won't build towns in swamps either, just like badlands.

But then there's pools of water everywhere! Stupid water!
Then again, at least I can just floor over the water. Can't really do much about buzzards when they just fly in everywhere...
