I left DF running in the background during my programming class. I had a lot of stone to haul, so I supposed I might as well expand the hallway leading to the pit where I will begin to move all of my fort's storage to. Along with this, I seemed to have run out of coal.

However, 8 z-levels higher something was going down. As it turns out, the game said I ran out because my fort's Z -2 was being flooded. As it turns out, I accidentally designated a tile to be dug out next to the river that flowed straight through this level. Now luckily I had the foresight to cover my stairwell with hatches; as such I don't need to worry about flooding my lower levels. HOWEVER! This level that is being flooded is no ordinary level:  it's not only my storage level, it's my main infrastructure. Once again, this wouldn't be a problem as I have backup reserves of everything in the event that the upper levels get captured by gobbos. Unfortunately however, only 900 out of my overfilled stocks of food (I have something like 10000 units of food and booze)

Glacial on dwarves being assigned socks:

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!

My fort, free from the tyranny of their elf overlords are humping like crazy, pumping out babies while the last babe is still in the arm of their mother.

It also means that 1/4 of my fort is now babies. Or 3 year old dwarf children, who thinks it nice to stay outside and enjoy the cool, winter air while my burrow alarm sounds because a siege of darkness is approaching.

My fort is pretty old (I have no idea how long it's been going, so I'm just gonna say 10 years), but apparently I still haven't gotten around to adequately preparing for a siege.  This last one killed about a third of my fort.  Nobody seems to mind too much, though.

Guess I better start working on sealing up the entrance a little bit better.

I was just done trading with the humans when a bunch of goblins showed up. I raised the drawbridge and watched the humans get murdered. As I was gettinig ready for a counter attack, the roc nimma alaaso showed up as well and was apparently bigger than most dragons.

Luckily the goblins chopped its wings off and left so my army could kill it, take the credit and head back inside :)

Oh and the world has entered the golden age... sounds boring

I just found Curious Underground Structure. Not big problem, I thought. My twenty goodly-trained dwarwes with full steel armouring attacked to Fortress. First sixty zombie- and sekeletal animal men were not any kind of problem, but after I attacked to third layer of Fortress (where adamantine weapon was) my soldiers started to die. Few hundred zombie-things forced me to retreat. I lost three soldiers, but i took down least hundred of enemies. After retreat I'll heal other dwarfs and attack.

Wuuut. I keep getting HM-level migrants. I've gotten a wood crafter, stone crafter, bone carver, tanner, and metalsmith like this now. In one fort.

You murdered your Fortress' children? :(

Also, I just got a HIGH! MASTER! WEAPONSMITH. As a migrant. And I've got a possessed metalcrafter; also high master, who seems to be waiting for nickel. I've no nickel nor garnierite.  ???

Sadly Lullgilts is being crushed under it's first ambushes, as the axe and whip gobbos have made quick work of my military. Everyone else then ran outside to save who they could with little success. If anyone survives this, then back to rebuilding and lots of coffins. Bah. It was like my military was wearing paper.

I didn't think 22 Dwarfs would have very much effect. :P

Also, I'm a dummy. I was fretting over finding garnierite for nickel for a mood, but turns out he wanted a shining gem. So I quickly had a morion cut.

My fort is built on a cliff with waterfall. Next to the waterfall is a meeting area. Because the dwarves got fed up with Urist McCatlover having tons of cats, they decided to build a sacrificial platform. All the cats fell to the beautiful lake down there... but not all have died. So there's a bunch of cats stuck on rocks in the middle of the lake....with no access, what are your suggestion! (thinkink about dropping anvils)

My fortress goes smoothly, ignoring the irritation of cavern critters trying to sneak in, interrupting everything. So far, a troll, giant olm, and family of thopits all made the mistake of pissing me off.

I'm working on a magma pump stack to get the stuff from z.89 to z.124 and up. It's about halfway done. Had to make a lot of channels where the stack needs to be moved out of the way of various underground features, including the fort, but overall I think it will take around 5-6 waterwheels running off the aquifer to power it. I've designated a huge waterwheels battery though. I intend to create several monolithic above-ground structures with natural-cast obsidian roofs, not to mention magma forges at ground level, and many different magma/water/obsidian defense systems.
Here's to hoping plants grow up there...
Orthoclase and green glass are my only options for native magma-safe materials, so it's been slow to wait for green glass pump components, including blocks.
After getting magma up to the ceiling of the map, I need to pump water up and build the intended structures. The water should be easy, since I have a huge river (with impressive waterfall), and aquifers to take advantage of. I'm still thinking about the sorts of structures I want to design. Nothing too boring and mono-geometric, but they must still be imposing and defensible. I'll also have to design a drainage system for all the magma and water so I can deconstruct their pipelines above-ground, leaving an attractive city that amazes humans who see no means of construction visible on the exterior.
Of course, I could just use dfhack and pretend to have pumped material up there...

Additionally, the ranger captain caught sight of one of the hostile humans in the house he was removing part of the roof from, and shot him in the face, killing him.

My fort is built on a cliff with waterfall. Next to the waterfall is a meeting area. Because the dwarves got fed up with Urist McCatlover having tons of cats, they decided to build a sacrificial platform. All the cats fell to the beautiful lake down there... but not all have died. Droppng objects on creatures does nothing. I would give them a way out and drop the cats repeatedly form a great height until they actually die.

The fort got boring, so I decided to visit the circus for a good old batch of Fun. So my miners start eating some cotton candy, I've only got my two military squads waiting outside. And once I make it through the tube of delicious cotton... wheres the clown car?! There are no clowns to be seen...

My woodcutter got assaulted by a goblin ambush recently, the squads were rushed and the goblins were easily wiped, but they left the woodcutter crippled, laying on the grass. When someone was going to take him to the hospital some random animal scared the shit out of him, giving a work cancellation. The woodcutter was thirsty and hungry, so other dorfs would take food and water to him, but nobody was taking him to the hospital. After some time the medical chief himself had to take him indoors, now he's getting sutured and plastered.
