(Went into init to up the population cap: Ironbear needs its monarch to touch off some brilliant endgame insanity.  then perhaps, with a little reconstruction of early years, I'll be able to tell this story)

"We've found the blessed blue stone, but only by scouting the Great Magma Sea.  None has been mined yet, though a 15 story surface-to-sky Microcline tower has been ordered to commemorate the occasion.  We've got two veins, as well... this unreckoned wealth, though, won't be tapped until our monarch arrives.  Crown's orders.

We got a single aluminum flask from human traders, after not being able to order any of the material from the mountainhomes.  Hopefully, the humans will bring more next year, allowing us to meet future aluminum mandates from Duchess Tulon by melting.

The goblin war-leader of the Rhythmic Terrors is still caged in a platinum cage in the royal throne room, awaiting our monarch.  Goblin efforts to recover their leader seem to have decayed: we got an ambush this year, but no siege.  As is protocol, captives were stripped and cast into the pit known as "the Maw of Tartarus".

At this point, the caverns belong to the Forgotten Beasts: I lost too many good dwarves attempting to claim the first layer from the monsters dwelling there, and ultimately got lucky that none of their poisons spread.  The grime blob that appeared this year has lethal vapors, and it's backed up with a fire-breathing Thrips and fire-breathing feathered alligator.

Wizards studying "time dilation" and the mystical concept "FPS" have demanded we continue our mass sacrifice of puppies and indicate that the overwhelmingly female population of war dogs (nearing 50) may serve as a better offering.  I'm not much of a scholar myself, but time seems fine right now, so perhaps we're doing something right.

Dealing with those dogs would help with another problem: we recently obtained a war bear, and Duchess Tulon wants it as a pet.  Whenever I ask the kennel master to assign her the bear, he shouts my head off about how one war animal is as good as another.  I finally told him to give her an animal, and the duchess has a new "pet" dog.  She is not amused.  I don't want to get rid of our canine fighting force until we have bears breeding, though, and it seems a waste of future ☼Puppy Roast☼ to eliminate the breeders.

Booze stocks have broken ten thousand!  I wanted to hold a party to commemorate the event, only to find that the way our meeting halls are designated, there's no place to hold a party, and never has been: Idle dwarves just lounge in their chambers or chat it up in the dining room, but regulations demand the noise be kept down.  I'm not sure I want to fix that, though: there may not be enough work for all the dwarves in Ironbear, but there is a LOT that needs to be done.  Perhaps a royal ballroom for when we finally become a mountainhome is in order?

It's a sad, sad day for Dirgebends. We repelled a werewolf invasion, but Gutuah Au-Tkhun, was thrown off the walkway and plummeted to the bottom of the chasm after killing three with little effort. He survived for a long time, seeming to get well with hospital treatment, though still broken and bloody and was relocated to his own quarters by a fellow warrior, Hasa. He later fell foul of infection and perished. An unfitting end to a great hero.

Hasa then fell prey to a demon attack. In an attempt to return to the fortress to form up with his squad, the fortress legend was struck in the back of the skull with a pike and died.

Our Butcher girl, Bern,  is slowly climbing her way up the rungs. Earnt herself a title recently and though she has never come away from a battle without mark, she has yet to receive a serious wound that incapacitates her. The rest of the military are going to have to make do.

Gutuah was one of the first, in the swamp for many years, witnessed the first werewolf attack that nearly wiped the fort out, and was one of few survivors. Lost his wife in an attack from Centaur the next spring and while he doggedly soldiered on, he deserved a better death that that. Most sad is that he doesn't even have a tomb. The damn diggers are plugging away at all kinds of things, we've yet to find Flux of any kind, but they won't finish digging out the hero's tombs, and they haven't finished excavating the public graveyard either, and I'm pretty sure it's full now.

Still, Dirgebends goes on.

The Camp of crows is recovering from the fall of the Merchants of blood. The Murky Dreamy arrow's mostly cleaned up the place now, at least within the walls, and the merchants are slicing through our elven oppressors as they head to our gate to trade with us.

it seems even with their ridiculous weapons and armor an elven swordmaster will cut through a trade caravan.

To-do:
automate magma flow
mine and convert all gold/platinum/adamantine to statues
encrust all statues with all gems
smooth and engrave every surface
make enough booze to drown a yak

My it is nice to know where everything is...

Anyway, I am continuing to dig out magma reservoirs for my over complicated entrance, I probably have another six months to go on that before I start on the pump stacks and another six months before I test the system with water.

At the same time I am roofing over the walled-in flat portion of my map so my dwarves can gather socks with impunity. I lost a dwarf to a cave in caused by his "friend" constructing an unsupported floor section from a bridge. Actually the dwarf survived the cave-in with minor injuries, took 2 steps and decided to take a nap on a weapon trap.

I got a siege which predictably ended with a rainbow of colors on my weapon traps. They had one crossbow goblin that took out a peon before getting pincushioned. A surprising development was that a master lasher jumped (dodged) from a ledge onto my roof under construction. But in that target-rich environment he never attacked anyone and got one-shotted by one of my off-duty hammerdwarves.

First soon-to-be death in Veilsling- one of my miners failed to complete an artifact in time and went stark raving mad. Ah well! He'll be buried in a platinum sarcophagus.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Hm, Cloudtowers is off to a rocky start in reclaiming. The woodcutter died by starvation just before the first migration wave hit. Was also turned into the militia commander, but so much for that. I'm sure I embarked with food, but it looks like I was slack on my gathering plants initative. Need a cook to come along soon. The good news is a competent book keeper and diagnostician who also is a novice in every single craft were part of the first migration wave. Hopefully I'll figure out why the nest boxes aren't being constructed and a future military leader will pop up, along with some recruits. Meantime it's cleaning up the mess and putting in improvements for the defenses.

Edit: Eeeegggghhhh! Three have died and all coincidently were unhappy from the woodcutter's death. I've food and the others are fine. So pretty much puzzled why these refuse to eat. *grumble grumble* Might be doing the next reclaim sooner than expected....

I accidentally the whole river. With magma. And now most of it is obsidian and I need to dig it out again, because all the pumps stacks and the obsidian maker depend on its flow.

In other news, the magma cannon Mk.3 worked remarkably well, as opposed to it's previous versions - that's the reason why most of the river's gone now. The contraption is now pressurized by 6 screw pumps and can put out 50 tiles of 7/7 magma in the matter of a few seconds. It's not very useful for defence right now, as it's not aimed yet, but we'll see to that. It's only been 5 years after all.
Oh, and I got to choose a baron. I guess the old mayor who likes rose gold, querns and mules, will do. She also has a lack of empathy, little willpower and an iffy memory... honestly, I have no idea, how that one ever got that high up, but I like her tendency to only mandate a quern or two per year. I don't know what to do with 10 querns, but it's better than liking adamantine and dragonfly leather.

After many backbreaking days of labor all was finally ready. The levers were pulled, and the magma started flowing through the tunnel, eventually slowly filling a shallow basin. More levers, the flow of magma cut off and water was pumped up from the river to flow over the molten rock. With a great cloud of steam and to the glee of the watching dorfs, the facility was inaugurated. The great ObsidianMaker was finally finished.
The two greatest miners were sent in to render the solid rock into manageable chunks. But the populace were sceptical. For reasons unknown they refused to touch the manufactured stone. Whispers of blasphemy travelled throughout the fortress, and so, the facility was left, unused, for years. Until...

Invasion!
A lone off duty soldier fetching a drink from the river was suddenly greeted to the sight of a squad of the enemy. Mounted on voracious cave crawlers, they represented a fearsome sight. Mere moments later lookouts on the walls gave the alarm. Swiftly the comrades of the lone warrior rushed forth to render aid, hoping against all odds that they would arrive in time...
But the lookouts had been inattentive, for as the militia rushed out it was faced with a horde of enemies charging inside across the drawbridge left open for the valiant sally. A great melee ensued with the drawbridge dyed the red of goblin blood.

The great battle raged, the valiant dorf warriors hacking away with reckless abandon, fire in their eyes. But alas the lone warrior had already been slain, the great mounts now finished with their snack threatened to tip the outcome of the battle. For though the warriors were indeed great, so were the numbers of the horde. And if these monstrosities were to join the fray the dorf defenses would surely be overwhelmed.

But alas the wanton lust for destruction that infuses such vile beings prevailed over tactical sense. Seeking out the closest dorf-made item to destroy they found a curious structure, littered with sharp rock. And there! Before them stood a finely crafted pair of stone floodgates. The hatred of everything dorfish spurred them on as the fierce mounts were set upon wrecking these majestic mechanisms.
Cheers were momentarily heard when the gates started to fail, but were quickly subsumed by horrid screams as the fire of the earth erupted forth. Ending the lives of the goblin general and his elite troops in the greatest agony.

Witnessed from the ramparts of the fort, the news rallied the weary warriors to finally destroy the last of the invading force. Covered in the blood of goblin and dorf both, the remaining troops took a few breaths before bellowing the proclamation that ObsidianMaker, the supposed affront to the gods had saved them all...

My potter hit a fey mood.

He's demanding body parts, and there are yak skulls, bones, and horns available to him.

If he wants ivory, he's going to get dog teeth. A lot of them. Attached to the dog.

The water-driven logic works great on  my magma hallway.  filling and drainage, also works great.

New problem:  Goblins like to stand and mill about on top of the initial trigger at the start of the hallway, this basically makes the whole thing cycle repeatedly.  first one walks over, a few get in, they get vaporized, but the rest stand outside ON the trigger, waiting their turn.  I want efficiency!  No waiting for goblin burning!

If I put the pressure plate inside the hallway, magma rests on it, and they won't path past it.

So I think I will go with the pressure plate at the END of the hallway.  the odd 1, 2 or 3 goblins might make it over the line, but that's what the slicey traps are for, right?  If I get really lucky, they'll get scared and want to path back out, which... would be good for me, and very bad for them.

My first attempts at creating the moses effect were... somewhat successful, but not enough to clear out a section of the river. 4 screw pumps in a row do indeed take water level in that line down to 0, though it flickers with 1's far too often to build a wall or fortification, and even when turned backward, the remainder of the river does not want to drain out the end. I've built a second group, and after some tweaking I'm re-routing the flow to go to the side, and then back toward the source. If this does not work, I will then build an outlet all the way to the edge of the map, in which case I'll have to make a lot more siltstone blocks.

my relatively rapid expansions of my wall has resulted in a not-entirely unforseen, but certainly unplanned for side effect. The goblins corpses keep appearing further and further form both my trade depot and from safety. I'm also going to build a chamber (attached to a barracks complete with military supplies), in which they will encounter my training sword dwarves. My free dwarves will then have a safe buffer for gathering goblinite.

My efforts to create a teacher for military skills has paid off btw. I now have a dwarf who is a legendary teacher, and competent leader. I'm sending her back to the squad of super-elites to learn more skills she never quite mastered, but she is my go-to dwarf for recruit training now. Soon, my entire fort will be legendary fighters with masterwork steel short swords and mastework dwarven clothes in inactive squads.

speaking of which... in an accident with the water re-directer, I lost my last clothier. I'll have to train another dwarf to take over those duties. The military creates a great preparation group btw for these tasks, as most of their attributes go crazy high.

Edit: I just cleared out my leftover goblinite, along with my bins and bins of masterful, embroidered and dyed pigtail fiber clothes. Value was 371,471 for a single bar of aluminum.

the value of my fort went from 932,171 to 600,437
