Paddlecaverns is still doing well. Steel industry is slightly bogged down by a lack of fuel, made an obsidian farm which is not quite as epic as I expected. I will soon move my smelting operations down there to begin churning out steel in earnest. Had a siege, so I lowered my wall grate portcullis, and the goblins patiently waited off to the side. I set up a few cage traps and a ballista aimed at the front door and OPENED THE GATE!!!

And then realized the goblins had left, presumably out of boredom.

Several useless artifacts, including a crown and toy axe. However, I also have a table which I am saving for some bigshot noble's room and an iron high boot, steel chain leggings, and two-hump camel bone mace which have been put to good use.

Attempting to recoup my livestock after having lost many to an ambush while I was still waiting for migrants who knew what an axe was. All in all though, things are going pretty well. Still have yet to encounter my first Semi-megabeast/Megabeast/Forgotten Beast or anything of the sort, despite having a high population and ridiculous exported wealth. I expect I will probably hide from one if it should come soon anyway. And I'm taking it slow on the digging after having gotten greedy with cotton candy on one of my previous forts.

First: I embarked w/o axes. 10 months dealing only with stones and no beds, thou my dorfs were happy with que furniture.

You can deconstruct the wagon and make training axes for cutting trees. ;)

A child randomly got kidnapped by a goblin I never saw. Somehow.

Incidentally, my group had the random name The Poker of Faces. I named the fortress the Ace of Hearts to make it fit.
In my experience children are impossibly stupid. If you don't have a meeting area assigned they have a nasty habit of standing around outside usually far far away from anyone who could possibly help them or see the incoming goblins.

Yeah, it crashed after I did that, and after a re-load, I confirmed that dorfs were restricted to drink only at the designated water area, that my meeting hall was on and properly sized, and even completed a wall around my fort, with animals at the entrance to spot thieves.

The child still managed to get kidnapped without my knowing about it. Dorf children are not smart.

I actually had a baby get snatched earlier, I don't understand how the mother clutching the baby didn't notice something was up.

I'm playing an above-ground xmas-themed fortress called Magicgrotto. I didn't take any items with me so I could take a bunch of reindeer. My hunter started with his hunting skill disabled - possibly because I brought no crossbow or ammo - yet the job list says he's out hunting and I can't turn it off. I wanted him to be my woodcutter for a while but he won't come back for the axe. He's just wandering around in the snow like a noob.

Edit: OK he's brought his own equipment, but I've disabled all his labours and he's still hunting without permission. Damn you Bėmbul!

He'll keep hunting until he kills something or runs out of ammo, if his hunting labor is disabled after he kills he'll stop.

Or, if he is deceased, he will be dead.  Not big surprise.

I'm going to do an old-fashioned fortress: Using only the dirt level, not using ANY other Z-Levels, and if I don't find coal, I'm going to use the local flora (trees) as fuel.

I think I'll name it "Boatmurder", yes...

EDIT: Never mind. I found a (rather small) Calm Mountain with a Volcano, a Calm Badland, and a Calm Forest. No aquifer. Shallow metals. Deep metals. Absolutely NO modding done whatsoever.

Holy crap you guys weren't kidding about giant badgers! I embarked with lots of animals, hoping to start an industry but likes like that sure as hell won't be happening!

Oh hell, just got ambushed.

In a last ditch effort, I pastured our entire forts population of chimps by a door and had them charge with a peasant with no experience or gear whatsoever.

Chimp teeth are sharp.  All the goblins died.

My fortress's name is "Eyeball". I decided to be silly when the name randomizer came up with the name of "Eyebells" and so changed the "bells" to "ball".

Eyeball's lava has 6's running around in the surface. It's leaking, for some reason.

Otherwise, I'm getting the General purpose stockpile room dug out. I have a meeting room that I'll eventually turn into a dining room, as well. The wagon is far from the entrance, but I'll fix that problem, and the wagon logs to a trade depot. Once everything is in place, I'll dig out spaces next to the lava to build a Magma Forge, and a Magma Smelter (even though the only metal ores I have are Native Gold, Garnierite, and Galena).

I've also got a few small farming rooms dug out, and an extra workshop space across the 1-tile hallway I've been digging out. Eventually, I'll get to digging deeper--and higher--for more space, more metal, more stone, and more living space.

I started a fort where a river goes over an 8 z-level cliff to join a 46 wide major river. I was going to have the main entry being through a bridge that goes through the waterfall, giving my dwarves happy thoughts. So far I   lost two dwarves swept off the part-complete bridge.

A few days into winter, all surface water just froze. Now I have to completely rethink the concept.

My militia just initiated Plan Omega and physically destroyed all traces of a goblin invasion. Plan Omega involves 4 barrels of rum and a trained dragon.
