Huh. My gem cutter somehow made a violet spessartine bracelet (finely crafted). It's not being taken to any stockpile, where should it go? How did he make this? How can I replicate this? Is it possible to encrust other gems on this thing?

I think, I'm thoroughly screwed  ???
I just got this giant humanoid made from clear glass and attacking with deadly dust. I thought, my emergency squad (3 macelords, 2 spearlords, all heavily armed and armoured) could use it for a little practice. Maces against glass sounds pretty easy. They died quickly. Then I sent 30 more almost legendary dwarves  and some dogs to kill it and they finally did it, but I don't think, many will survive.

This is one (of about 5) pages from the announcement screen. They all inhaled the dust, got paralysed and suffocated before a doctor could even reach them. Ok, one surgeon tried and now he's in the list too.

40 dwarves (mostly military) and various animals are dead and I really don't want to lose this fort. The usual measures against tantrums are all in place, but the whole military except one squad of 8 rather inexperienced recruits is gone and I've got a feeling that the next elven ambush is already on it's way. As I only use military dwarves as defence, there are no traps or shut-in mechanisms in place.

...so what shall I do?

Put it in a finished goods stockpile and trade it to the next caravan.

Wall up the entrance. Your fort is under royal quarantine and therefore it's banned to contact outside world until you cleanse the dorfs :P

My 1st fort did recover after a near-fatal siege and tantrum spiral.  But I never had steel and there were many aspects of my design I disliked.  And frame rate was terrible.  I abandoned and set pop cap to 100.

While still pretty new to DF, my 2nd Fortress is going swimmingly, now on year 17 iirc.  Part of this is definitely my site.  No magma yet, but the north part of the embark was a smallish mountain under which lies the fort.  The south part a flat plain of small ponds and trees.  The mountain above is flush with limonite, magnetite, hematite and piles of flux.  Oh, and coal and lignite too (though I've burned through what I could find).  And tons of native gold.  And copper, silver, nickel.  I do not want for metals.

20 melee and 10 marksdwarves, all in steel w/ leather under (boy steel is nice).  Everyone has a war dog or two.  Marksdwarf commander has an artifact dog bone xbow.  With my array of bridges, cage traps, winding weapon trap path all under marksdorf fire sieges are pathetically easy.  They show up, half are caged, most of the other half get chewed up or dodge into no-goblins-land.  Melee runs in for mop up.  The few that aren't brave and try to flee (and don't get trapped inside) are now flung away with a giant bridge that flings them across the fields to the south.  The caged are stripped and pitted to all the militia; 20 melee in the pit room, the marksdwarves behind fortifications.  A cyclops showed up and a hunter (later dying to a siege), after being punched a few times (damaged liver) fractures the middle spine with the first shot.  Three more shots breaks a foot, hand, lower arm.  He conveniently leaves the now passed out cyclops in the refuse pile.  Go go dog bone bolts.  I'm sure I'll eventually get some titan that murders everyone, but attacks are a laugher atm.  However.. while many of my militia are level 12-13 fighter/archer/melee/xbow, I don't have a legendary yet.  Something still isn't right about my training.  No danger rooms and I do occasionally lose someone.. but I would have expected higher skills.

Plenty of industries and luxuries.  I've just finished 6 prison cells with bed and all gold for furniture/chains/door.  My broker from the original 7 is now a countess.  I made a cistern and drained the closest pond into it.  I just build/remove a wall to top it off after the rainy season fills the pond.  I got lazy and forgot about this... a Roc flew through the passage and up into fort proper.  I felt lucky only losing a leather worker.  But pretty uneventful.  Lots of kids and babies everywhere.  DT shows a near solid band of bright green with my deliriously happy dwarves.

I also embraced bridge smashing garbage disposals (7 in various locations).  I already have more silk blah blah clothes than I can sell.  Smashing has really helped tidy things up.  This has been probably one of the best activities to maintain order yet.

However, I have yet to see magma (in this or the first fort).  Nor have I stepped foot in a cavern yet.  With the rest of the fort running like a well oiled machine, I made a trap hall nearly mirror the top level's, some 20z below.  And now I have begun to feverishly dig down.  Been conservative long enough.

I've seen that a few times, I think that it's a glitch when your cutter attempts to make a Large Gem. There isn't a stockpile for stored gems so you need to set up a garbage dump, designate it for dumping, and unforbid it once it's taken there.

It's not a glitch. Gem crafts, like large gems, are made 'sometimes'. It's roughly 1/3 chance no matter the skill.

Just treat it like another +rock craft+ for selling to caravan.

Catastrophe.
Make some shut-in mechanisms. Also, consider building a "pool" in your entrance like what's listed here so as to help clean the contaminants.

I have no shortage of animals, but at the same time I have far more food than I can possibly use or even sell without just offering it to the caravan. Many of my livestock animals have to be pastured outside my fortress walls. And, well...

As far as early warning systems go this is the best idea I've ever had.

I'm starting a program to train the family of Gorlaks I kidnapped and enslaved am raising to be vicious killers. I've built a 3x3 danger room that I put each of them in at different times but they keep breaking toes and going blind. .

I don't really need traders, so this doesn't make it any harder... I'll think I'll try it for roleplaying :)
The fort is mostly above ground. A walled circle of 81 tiles diameter filled with water and all the buildings in there. It's got a main tower with 112 bedrooms (for the 65 remaining dwarves), a royal dining room and a statue garden on the roof. There's also a separate building for food and drink stockpiles, a butchery/tannery (specialised on kittens and puppies) and the mayor's house. Everything else isn't finished yet.
From all I can see so far, the infection doesn't spread as it's no blood or secretion... everybody who died so far got in direct contact with the dust clouds, got immediately paralysed and suffocated within a day or two. I'll just close off the main area of the fight for now, quarantine a few dwarves that are definitely healthy (I even got a few rooms that were prepared as survival vault) and build a wall around the fort's entrance. Nobody is getting inside until there have been no tantrum or disease related deaths for at least a year. After that period, I may consider reopening the infection area and see if it's still dangerous.

[edit]
One short contact with the outside world was allowed. Specifically, one very short and gory contact with a goblin siege which arrived a week after the great dying. I sent my recruits out there to be slaughtered but they did remarkably well, sustaining only minor injuries while beating trolls into a bloody pulp. These guy's will be the elite squad of my new military.
...and the syndromes obviously don't spread as soon as all the primary infected are dead. I had hoped to finally loose a fort in an epic way (so far it was mostly boredom or FPS death), but it seems, Armok is with my dwarves. Still, the quarantine stays up for at least one year to be sure.

[edit2]
Tantrums all around! Yay! A woodcrafter just punched a farmer in the face whose husband promptly destroyed a door to the water reservoir which flooded part of the workshop rooms.
There's still hope for death by complete chaos...   :P

Wait, what is the potential catastrophe?  That fact that I don't have a "dwarven bathtub"....  and for that matter how did you know I didn't have one??  Urist McMindreader...

Or was this simply a reply to the wrong post and now I'm all paranoid for no reason?

I got a pig tail fiber artifact dress. Turned the sod into a legendary weaver instead of the legendary clothesmaker I expected, which might've been more profitable.

I wish there was something going on. This year cost me most Dwarfs (two miners encased in ice, most unreasonably, and my legendary mason plummeted ten levels and died) but nothing really happens. I've just gotten an offer for a barony, have 118 Dwarfs and roughly three million created wealth but the Goblins have sent a total of five snatchers and none of them recent, I've had no smbs, FBs or titans at all. And there don't seem to be any humans.
