Interestingly, the only civilization with that war is The Foggy Bodices. The fortress was named Ancientbust, and the group was the Admired Dresses. All these were the initial namings.

Well, I haven't upgraded to .19  yet, mainly because I'm still enjoying the fact that my fort is still alive!

I have a roaming Forgotten beast made of undulating glass down in the caverns. It doesn't seem to interested in finding my fortress. It's swum past one entrance several times already. No fun for me :(
Then I had an Ettin attack. This was right after I'd half demolished a couple of caravans of elves, the survivors still stayed to trade. While the dwarves were happy enough to pull the lever and raise the drawbridge on the elves, they weren't so much about the Ettin. The Elves hung back, took pot shots through the fortifications and then a couple of them engaged it on my drawbridge.
It struck down one of them and crippled another and then dodged off the bridge and fell four stories into my fortress.

Badly wounded it still hauled it's broken self up and chased a lone dwarf. At this point the one ready soldier, a veteran girl who slew the first forgotten beast in the fortress, showed up to save the day. Despite her combat skill, the Ettin would not go down and during the epic clash it clawed off her lower left arm. She was forced to retreat from the bloodied beast as a second dwarf soldier, a wrestler, appeared. By this time the Ettin was so wounded that it could barely attack. That didn't stop it from evading or blocking a large portion of the attacks. Then finally a third soldier, a swords dwarf with a cleaver, helped the wrestler to finish it off.

Just now started a 0.31.19 fort so that I could play around with all the new features. I'm already excited at the prospects.
We embarked on a mostly featureless snowy plain that promises a metal and flux, though with plenty of iron from the mountainhomes. I started laying out some rooms and hallways, getting started in one corner on a space that will eventually be a farm. I had my crafter crank out a few nest boxes for the geese I brought along. As soon as the first one was placed, a duck that had just appeared on site claimed it, waddled over, and unloaded a dozen eggs. The bad news was that this nest box was right near the entrance into the farm, and the duck would spazz out whenever anydwarf got too close. A miner was trying to get in to finish carving the room out, and the duck made a valiant stand until said miner got fed up and hacked the thing's leg off with his pick, killing it instantly.

Sometimes it's the little things in life that make living all the better.

I have sent the dwarves of Pointbanner to systematically strip the surface world of its trees and its bowels of iron ore. Then I'll start churning out axes and picks so I can do it faster! :D

Honestly, kind of boring right now. Not even any wild birds making beelines for my nest boxes.

Lost my first .19 fort.  I killed two dragons, a roc, and a goblin ambush.  But this ONE MINOTAUR had spirit.  He managed to go through my stonefall traps like a champ, kill my legendary army, and slaughter everyone.  You know the worst part though?  The first dwarf he killed was a fisherdwarf, who had a peacock leather flask of dwarven ale.  The Minotaur killed him, and used the waterskin to murder everyone else.

That waterskin has 101 kills.  Wow.

make nesting boxes! then stay away. Soon you will have real live offspring from your undead tormentors.

There are many issues with this statement.

We've not even built 5 levels of the artificial magma pipe, and we've already lost two dwarves and one other is put in the hospital with severe injuries. Oh, and this:

A few seasons ago, a tiger spear woman somehow fell into a washed out murky pool. She stayed there for a amount of time. Over the course of her impromptu imprisonment, several sieges came against the fortress each other having a wave of tiger people. Just as I was giving the bottom section of the magma pumpstack into an artificial magma pipe, I checked the battles screen. I don't usually do this since I have a pretty big military and there's always a red R at the top left hand side. Curiously, there were three tiger cubs in the combat reports.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not remembering any tiger cubs joining in on the fight, I decided to check and zoom in on why and where they were fighting.

Yikes.

Yep, a mother decides to attack her own offspring, the offspring fight back, and kill the mother.

The murky pool spontaneously generates a little water around summer, but it has never gotten above 4 units high, or at least, not that I've seen...

The Helmed Smith found Ramring, my first 31.19 fortress. Strike the Earth!

Clay, plenty of trees, and enough tetrahedrite veins exposed to outfit an army. Flux too, although my civ doesn't have iron. I'll have to make a huge castle out of dolomite blocks.

My first .19 fortress is an utter failure and was abandoned not long after it's initial foundations were dug out.

The two miners dug out the fortress basics, and then died of thirst. No one else worked. At all. They built a bridge and then stopped working. It was ridiculous. After assigning more miners to replace the two and designating their plces they ignored me completely.

Captured a pair of Giant Eagles. There will be a war giant eagle army, if I can get them to breed.

My first 0.31.19 fort went well for a year or two. Due to some tinkering I have no goblins or kobolds to worry about so I thought it would be easy. Then a forgotten beast came by. A giant cardinal (a type of bird apparently). If I had waited for the beast to engage my dorfs in favorable terrain we might have won. The militia numbered only four but they did have steel armor.
But no, great general that I am I ask the militia to charge the forgotten beast.

It was waiting at the edge of a magma tube.

It could fly.

All four soldiers were lost to magma, and their replacements lacked the skill and equipment to challenge the giant bird. I had to seal the magma forges with stone walls, dooming those who were looting the battlefield. Altogether eighteen died, roughly a quarter of my fort at the time.

And then a minotaur attacked. Thankfully the minotaur had neither flight nor deadly dust so it only crippled one dorf before being punched and kicked to death.

In other words, FUN.

I've created indoor plumbing! Ok, not really. I have however tapped the river at the top of the waterfall, channeled it through my fort, diverted it outside to my protected outdoor alcove where it makes a nice artificial lake and well, then sent it down several z-levels and back around into the river at the bottom of the waterfall. I can potentially have little ponds on many levels of my fort with ease. Next I'm working on EPIC MOAT. Normally, I carefully designate every channel block so dorfs don't imprison themselves. I thought this time I'd let them go for it... and they failed. One dorf REFUSES to leave the corpse of another miner (I guess. Can't explain his behavior otherwise!). He's dug himself SEVERAL up ramps. He'll happily do my bidding otherwise but absolutely refuses to leave the bottom of the moat.

During the moat building I had two ambushes, and quickly learned that my dorfs like getting stuck in infinite loops of "want to do X! Oh, can't do X because Outside is forbidden. I'll go back inside. Hey, I want to do X! Oh, can't do X because..." So then I have to cancel the skill associated with the job. Like, my miners kept wanting to build the MOAT. I had to remove them from mining so they'd go inside. I finally did get the drawbridge up... right as two dwarves walked over it. I don't know where they went... I didn't get reports of their deaths, so maybe the fall down the 8 z-level waterfall into the brook below didn't kill them. It is a mystery!

I am hoping my channel to the aquifer will finish sealing off my volcano (which drained itself of magma) off from the lava sea so I can build a floor in  the volcano and use it as a drop trap. I need it sealed off from the magma sea because the magma sea is ...occupied...
