I have basically dug myself in. trench is check. the only problem is no access to one part of the map due to cliff rivers. I'm at war with goblins somehow.
using retracted bridges made from useless stones to cover outside tiles, or to gain walkable path.
basically when i'm building above ground tower, i would build retracted bridges as ceiling if the project the fort's current need. it cost less material, and slightly fater to build overall than floors. and they dont cause cave-in.
I know that.
There's an ambush walking around. How do I know that? DF froze my computer just now  ::)  :P

Got nastalgic, revisited my old fort of combinering. I thought the fps issues I as having was due to having 200 dwarves. Apparently I had other problems, as it is pretty bad with only 7 dwarves. I think I'm going to be bridge-smashing a bunch of crap soon.

walling outer perimeter, leaving sole entrance, protected with forbidden cage traps or stone traps in earlier stage. later change into a mixture of cage and weapon traps, providing weakened arena foes.

I have just finished digging out ramps on the sides of a river emptying off a cliff.

I forgot that I had put grates there to wash/happy-ify dwarves.
I know have goblin corpses on the floor of my happiness center and a very bloody river.

I'd just build my fort in it.
and build some chambers extending into mid-air between cliffs, serve as arena/drowning chamber/waterfall/prison/monarch room(built out of gold or platinum).

anyway, i consider blood as an important type of trophy, until it grows into a FPS killer.

i play genesis mod.
normally i get werewolves and centuars through out the first one and half year.
siege, not just ambush.

you should really try building 10+ cage traps around you entrance in spring, forbid them and just wait, patiently. then you can harvest them in autumn.

well then i was clearly overacting  :P

speaking out caverns, i had one fort, abandoned upon embark, with sea shore and large section of cavern level one overlapping. when i unpaused, FPS was downed to like 2 or 3, and 'a cavern section has collaposed' spammed like a dozen pages.
it was like the only nice spot in a medium map.
Armok really had FURY!

If I remembered correctly...the one i mentioned had volcano, river(much useless), untamed wild temeprate forest, huanted grassland, joyous woods tropical swamp. one of them had chalk, the other had obsidian and other volcanic rocks, and two had no aquifer, sand, soil, many iron ore, oh, marble and great many native gold veins. but the FPS from water flow is killing the game so i abandoned it, after using dfreveal. pity it had many great things worn down by just one fault.

Well shit.
I opened the caverns to get some silk cloth for a moody dwarf. I sent down a large chunk of my military to make sure no FBs get into may fort. Well one showed up...with deadly dust. I was hoping it would be some type of pansy dust that would give everyone slight blisters or something. They all bled to death in minutes. No wounds, nothing, they just oozed blood. To make matters worse, half my fort ran down to reclaim all their armor and cloths. If the extract doesn't kill them, the tantrum spiral will.

Edit: Never mind. The game crashed when I examined a cat. Go kitties!

how do you get rid of pebbles to build farm plots on that loccation? Also, do I need seasonal irrigation for outdoor farming if I managed to get a farm plot built on constructed floor?

build floor over them and remove it. I think it should work.
