You could always build it on top of a support, then hide it.

EDIT: My military is supervising the emptying of the traps by my entire population. Three migrants survived, bringing me up to 38 civilians. It's taken a month so far, with 35 hauling, one butchering elf skeletons, one making steel and one building a second entrance bridge so I can keep the elves out while I clean out the corpses.

Just had to reload after five ambushes popped up practically at the same time. Three anubite groups, and two groups of goblins. And little old me right in the centre of the map, only proteceted by a single axedwarf and a ring of cage traps.

Embarked in a sinister temperate forest. Skeletal Deer killed my breeding dogs and ruined any chance of my survival. I like to rely on breeding for long-term food supplies. Need to figure out a new way of doing things.

New fortress, defended only by a line of traps and two chained war elephants. Elf trader arrives, goblins ambush. The goblins slaughter the elves, slaughter the elephants and much fun ensues.

The mountainhome bartorch celebrated it's 10th anniversary last year. Even the goblins brought some gifts in the form a full siege force (have been getting only ambushes for about 2 years). A few of them managed to run off, but the rest left so much crap that i've decided it's gonna be easier to build a pump stack to flood most of the map with magma.

Finally got around to play. One of the best 7 I've seen, 5 of which got no red physical stats. The region's thickness is also one of the thinnest around, only 26z deep. Antman civ and bloodmen await in the cave, breaching it is going to be very, very fun indeed. The Blackbiles has settled in Ashurns, the eerie forest of spirals. Strike the earth!!

New fort in using the Fortress Defense mod, called Foothold. I started to build the walls around the wagon.
Unfortunately, the wagon stopped in the middle of a mountain range. Due to Fun With Mining, all three of my miners have infected wounds. And they're all ecstatic.
And what's better is the fact that it isn't even Autumn yet.

Spring has arrived! You know what that means...

I'm much more prepared for them now. My soldiers are all armed and armored in full steel, and they spent about half a season in the danger room. I now can seal my trap corridor (six weapon traps with two steel serrated discs each) from the outside world, so I can clean out the corpses in peace, and I'm also making more discs. The blood will fly.
