WELL, I'm starting iron pruduction, and trying to get a good food foot hold. First year, and first semi-succesful fortress. No attacks on my dwarfs. My fail hunter brings in a mountain goat every week or so. It's hard to tell.

My animal caretaker managed to take just one cut schorl gem and make an entire scepter out of it that menaced with spikes.

Another kobold tried to rob us, and spent most of his time trapped inside the fortress running for his life.
Then in comes Urist McBigDamnHero again who brains the kobold with his pick.
If he wasn't such a good miner I'd put him in the military.

Mining skill is used for fighting with a pick FYI.

Welp... Reveredpapers had a Hydra less then 2 months after the ambush where the 3 goblins took down almost my entire military.  The only people who decided to respond to my "OHCRAPHYDRA!" alert... were 2 recruits and a hammerdwarf plus their puppies.  The result of this 400 year old beast charging me?  A few dead puppies, a dwarf with a BRUISED ARM, and a dead hydra.  51 pages of combat text where  the Hammerdwarf was breaking every bone in the Hydra's body with his silver hammer which ended in him shattering all the skulls on the hydra one by one, one recruit was cutting off various toes with his (+copper short sword+), and the last recruit with an +iron spear+ stabbed the Hydra in the gut at the start... and spent the rest of the fight biting him in the leg like a rabid dog.

After this Hydra was slain and hauled to a butcher shop did I get a migrant wave FULL of useless dwarves cannon fodder who went straight to my military, picked up their copper armor and got to training.  It then hit Winter Time... and I got my first siege!  Yay!  15 swordGoblins in iron armor vs 20 dwarves in copper/leather... again.  The result?  I beat the siege but my 110 Dwarf fort is now down to 72. I have enough military dwarves to fill out half as squad.

Thank god for the ability to order 30 coffins made at a time plus a well dug out catacomb to dispose of the bodies...

Edit: Edit for spelling/grammar since it's 5:30 AM and it made no sense when I read it...

New fortress because the computer hosting my old one is inoperable.

Just got done with building the initial shelter. I am currently setting up farms while my herbalist props up the food supply with gathered plants. I have moved my stockpile to the inside. Now I'm building up my supply of beds, tables, chairs and trap components.

Also felled over fifty trees while my miners were getting the first three five by five rooms up to where I could use them. I stockpile them in front of my fortress so that the elves can see how efficent Dwarven resource harvesting is whenever they decide to visit.

from a conversation log:

Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: oh man i had a jail sentence
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: first time ever
El Zorro: really?
El Zorro: what did they do?
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: mayor made a mandate for pigtail items, and i didn't notice, first i knew was when i got a message saying he'd canceled the mandate, i checked the justice screen and a totally random farmer was up for 21 days in prison
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: I had no prison, but thankfully i had also not appointed a captain of the guard, so the guy didn't get a beating from my all steel clad axe-wielding military
El Zorro: prison for not having farmed pigtail?
El Zorro: that's unreasonable
El Zorro: well, dwarves...
El Zorro: they're sort of unreasonable to start with
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: anyway i rushed to dig out a jail with nine cells, all engraved with masterful engravings, high quality steel chains, a masterwork bed, table, chair, booze barrel and stack of roasts in each room
El Zorro: it's a vacation
El Zorro: hehe
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: then i appointed a random glassmaker as captain of the guard. soon as she was appointed she went off, found the poor farmer and dragged him to the jail
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: apart from random dwarves walking in and helping themselves to his food and booze, it was great
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: i have now kitted out my captain of the guard in full masterwork steel armor and made her a masterwork adamantine hammer in case anyone needs a hammering
El Zorro: ...you mean the next poor farmer?
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: well imagine you gotta choose between 50 days in jail or five strikes with an adamantine hammer
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: adamantine being light as it is, that lady is walking around with a thirty thousand dwarfbuck nerf bat
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: *bop* Justice is served
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw: and the best bit is i can be all "what do you mean, soft on crime? she's got the best hammer any dwarf has ever wielded"

Candledark also had its first forgotten beast incursion, a great ankylosaurid with external ribs and a sting. We ate it, and then someone made an artifact trumpet out of its bones. Problem solved.

Haha, nice!

A hill giant sauropod with wings flew into my base and got murdered, gracefully dying on my refuse pile. The only thing it wounded was a stray dog and my Militia Captain managed to cut the lower body off.

Edit; Kobold thieves seem to be much better than Goblin ones. Usually my snatcher! messages centre on Goblins-in-cages. Also, I just executed five macaques, four goblins (crossbow and 3 thieves), 2 troglodytes and a crundle by tossing them 26 levels into magma. :P

About to abandon my current fort. There's not much more I want to achieve now. The last two FBs, while dangerous as heck, didn't get near the citizens, who are getting killed far quicker by my cavern draining project. I don't have the patience to check how long it'll take before Windslap is completely wiped out... and I'd rather give my dwarfs a chance to live semi-normally. (Plus I'll see if I can copy and change saves properly now.)
At last, I got to play a little bit with magma... pierced a hole in a magma pipe into the drained water. It moves so slowly, but it's so beautiful! And I know now it doesn't melt natural walls either. :D

Outcome of Windslap:
-a lever-controlled mass mist generator is remarkably easy to do, but it doesn't help much against syndromes
-a permanent mass mist generator would be slightly more difficult to do, but not by much
-magma is slower than expected (therefore safer?)
-understanding now why danger rooms are almost mandatory to survive
-must dig deeper faster
-must plan megaprojects better, too
-wells are damn hard to set up
-FUCKIN' CRUTCHES HOW DO THEY WORK (aka maybe it really is okay to mod in limb and/or nerve regeneration)
-18 years is a damn long time for a fort without an epic enough megaproject

Maybe one day, I'll reclaim the fort and finish the statue I had started. Maybe.
Next fort: aquifer. Or haunted/evil biome, I'll see. Maybe even a freezing map. A volcano would be nice...

EDIT: I can play with saves! There's a backup of Windslap just in case.  :D

Part 48 of my LP is up.

Hey, you know what's better than a forgotten beast? Two of them! Attacking at the same time! How wonderful.

I was staring at my monitor in disbelief for about 10 seconds when Furgig showed up.
