That's awesome.  What's the rest of the fort look like?

Not much to the rest of it honestly, just the basics.  My plan is to build a city above ground. I'll probably keep doing circle type paths for the roads and repeating patterns for the layout as much as possible.

Who builds a city above ground? The way to go is down go down to the furthest reaches of earth and set up a majestic city made from obsidian and is covered in the blood of the dwarves who worked on it.

Maybe I'll keep going down, I don't know for sure yet.  Anyway the rest isn't that impressive.

I mean, laying out all the rooms and stuff. I'm not good at that.

I wait until i had a 5 dwarf squad and 35 dwarves until i breached cavern 1 and as soon as i did an ash blob made a b-line to my fort and long story it killed 3 dwarves and 2 war dogs before it was killed by a grieving husband.  I don't understand why everyone thinks the caverns are super hard
You got lucky. Especially since chances with an FB usually are...
Poisonous: the shit spreads everywhere and fast.
Things that aren't blobs: as blobs typically collapse after a few hits.
Powerful material: as in a lot of cases it might be bronze, diamond, and rarely, clownite.
Push attacks: where the enemy throws their entire weight onto your dwarves rather than just an arm or similar apprndages.
Holy shit is that sonic?: some FB's, while can easily succumb to a cat biting it, it could still move fast enough to kill over 50 dwarves in less than a minute.

Fixed that for you. deep stones are not eligible materials to make random creatures out of..

Well right after the ash blob attack a humanoid made of vomit with horns and a deadly spittle managed to stragle one of my elite wrestlers and throw these ice shards at the rest of the squad.  A dog i had chained got hit too and is having a strange syndrome.

I'm in between forts; genning a world, being dissatisfied with the embark location, and getting back to it later.

As long as it's not just me. I feel better now. :)

You fail to mention the most powerful beasts; ones with deadly dust. It doesn't matter how well trained your militia is again these bastards, since they're walking cave-ins. Your Dwarves will get blown into obstacles and die. Or if you're fighting in the caverns themselves, they'll be blown off a cliff, fall several Z-levels, and then explode in a shower of bloody chunks.

Deadly dust also has syndromes sometimes right?

That's what makes it deadly. The syndromes, like everything else about the beasts, are random. It could be temporary dizziness or immediate and complete necrosis. If a beast's description says to beware its deadly spittle/dust/blood, poisonous bite/sting, noxious secretions, or poisonous vapors/gas, it has a syndrome that it passes through that medium.

Yes, but it doesn't really matter since almost any dwarf hit by the dust is going to have to be scraped off the cavern walls.

EDIT: I just noticed a giant eagle skeleton lying beneath my fortress. That guy died a LONG time ago.
