Hi!

Unbelievable, but I have started channelling (although there is still half of the digging to be done)...

Now, in the year 1076, I am down to 1 cat and 3 grizzly bears, so I guess, I ought to buy one or two additional cats soon (^_^;;

I am still not decided whether I should simply stick to male cats and thus avoid any breeding problems in the future - or whether to have female cats and risk impregnation by the male cats the traders may have in their caravans - decisions over decisions. :) :) :)

Hi!

caged animals don't sporebreed.

Thank you!

Then female cats it is...
Actually, I may rent a male cat once in a while to get some kittens - you know, purchase him from the human caravan and sell him back to the dwarves or the elves...

But what if the cat adopts a dwarf before you can re-cage and sell him? It's a dangerous game you're playing..

Operation: Seal the caverns has hit a snag. one of the off map entrances is roughly 35 urists in length, and over 30 urists high. with scaffolding, that's a whopping 2000 brick wall.
And I haven't even finished finding the rest of the holes. I'd completely missed the middle cavern somehow... now it turns out to be a 60+ z level vertical hole with lots of other branching vertical tunnels all round it, luckily it's pretty much totally non-pathable, the vertical tubes don't have much in the way of ramps at all.

time for more exploratory mining to determine the extents.

Genned a few ocean-free (and thus mostly aquifer-free as well) regions, and established a fort in each of them.

My most recent is called Gishdistromlam Angzakushilshash Sogdol - forget the English translation, but involves something to do with ice and hell. It is a snowbound hole in the cliff face as of now, although Adamantine is rumored to be somewhere in this part of this Freezing mountain range surrounded by equally freezing tundra - indeed, that was the reason why the fortress was founded in the first place! Also there's several layers of limestone too, so having Flux stone will not depend upon traders.
An Underground River has been discovered, deep into the mountain range. Soon a reliable source of wood will be available, and trading for it won't be as necessary.
Migrants have come - this is a bit annoying, seeing as I am all-but-out of the wood I brought on embark. Either I'll have to set up that aforementioned Tower Cap farm, or I will have to trade with whatever merchants bring to this blizzard-bound outpost.

Not really.
Having a low pop cap, I don't have any immigration into that fortress, and none of the 12 dwarves in it is a cat-lover (otherwise, I couldn't have sold the dozens of kittens I sold over the years to reduce my animal population).

However, I noticed that between the master engraving announcements, there was also an announcement last autumn that two dwarves married! So, I might get a cat lover born, although that is not too likely, I think.

I also noticed that the announcement screen claims all announcements to be from 1076, even those from last year (^_^;;

Started my newest fort with a few important tweaks to the raws.
My dorfs are tagged with speed 1, so work goes insanely fast, aquifers have been removed from the map entirely, the dungeon master is available straight from the embark, so my 4 man army is now escorted by a 20 war elephant body guard.
Most importantly, my dorfs are now so hardcore, they no longer sleep at all, so I dont have to bother with hundreds of bedrooms.

So far the fort has been calm, exept for the mandrills who keep attacking. One of them dragged my woodcutter with him into the pit above the river. as it turns out, mandrils can swim, my dorf cannot.

Captured shore of the cavern lake. Yellow is catapult facing north, "bridge" leading to main fortress.

Also, my military just killed blind cave ogre with ease.

My military works just fine.  I just can't get the ranged units working.

I have several hundred rare stones & legendary dwarves as every fort should. I have a massive elephant breeding program and about 70 tame elephants ready to protect my 134 dwarves from goblins, elves , and clowns. I am now mining platinum:) and circus metal. To entertain myself I drop nobles into a pit full of hostile tigers. To bury dwarves that died of natural causes (not circus or tiger pit) I make a steel coffin and drop it into the magma sea with their remains inside. OH! And I have an underground tower cap farm. I muddied a 3000 square room and let some mushroom spores in from the cave. Yay! My dwarves will now never have to go above ground ever again! I can shut myself underground forever.

the animal theory is probably a myth anyway.
It sure isn't. Animal pathing (outside of their cages) definitely hits framerate, but that stone will do it in faster.

I don't notice any difference in FPS when removing stone. I just atom smashed 30,000 stones. And now my game has gone from 10 FPS to 11 FPS. Dumping that much stone took 125 dwarfs three years. Not worth it.

Toady did some serious work on improving processor use. Otherwise we'd all be grinding at 3~20 FPS after breaching a cavern or two.

Hi, new guy here  :)
Right now, nothing is going on in my fort because DF is virtually unplayable to me. So, either I'll be waiting for updates, or give in to the withdrawals and go back to 40d.
What did go on was me building a huge outdoor wall for improved woodcutter & herbalist safety, finding magma and adamantine, making steel armor with my legendary armorer, and more.
