As I reported beforehand, I got a forgotten beast in my caverns all of a sudden. To be precise:
The forgotten beast Langul has come! A towering one-eyed capybara. It has a spiral shell and it appears to be emaciated. Its purple hair is unkempt. Beware its fire!
And having lost the hope for my fortress, I wanted to give them a final stand against the beast - either that, or if it turned out to be a pushover see how they fare against the giant cave spiders that must be down there as well.
Having ordered a trap in the corridor leading to the breach, I changed my mind and immediately ordered my miners to dig a tunnel to connect to the cavern surface. I simply didn't have the patience to wait for the trap to be built (the tunnel starts outside my fortress proper because I wanted to have the benefit of the entrance traps should I get cave denizens upon breaching. In addition, whenever I saw Lagun, it was moving around quite leisurely, so I didn't think it was that fast.
Half way through the digging, I recruited everyone who had an axe into my emergency military squad (before that consisting of one untrained dwarf who by virtue of being the only soldier in the fortress also was the militia commander (^_^;; ) and stationed them in the newly dug tunnel. Of course, none of them moved towards the tunnel but instead prepared their lunch boxes and what not.
Since they took longer than expected, I considered postponing the final breach by undesignating the last digging tile, but given how sluggish Langul was, I decided to allow my bookkeeper to dig through that final wall.
So far, everything had gone more or less according to plan, there were even two recruits who were thinking about going to their station and the bookkeeper was swiftly returning to the fortress proper.
But then I checked on Langul - and it was racing through the cavern like a madman! In no time had it reached the newly dug tunnel where it ripped off one of its legs causing it to die. (just for good measure, the forgotten beast started the fight with breathing fire without much effect, though).
There was nothing I could do but watch as Langul reached the open floodgate (since I planned on attacking Langul in the caverns, I had left it open) and smashed it without even stopping.
As Langul reached the surface, it spotted another cat and began chasing it in a really great chase scene. Once in a while it would stop and breathe fire in a long stream, but the cat was moving so swiftly that it never got hit. And the delay of the fire breath allowed the cat to keep its distance - even though Langul swam(!) through some muddy pools to get at the cat. After setting the grass south of the fortress proper aflame, the merry company headed into the fortress itself, Langul completely ignoring the weapon traps in its path (fortunately, it didn't wreck them).
In the courtyard, Langul finally stopped. It killed a cat (I am not sure whether it was actually the one it had chased - I was too panicked/confused to check things in time) before the tame animals in the vicinity confronted it. Of course, the militia leader with the two war grizzlies was still nowhere to be seen.
Thus, Langul killed a dog by kicking it (okay, I just read tvtropes so I have to mention that detail
), as well as one buzzard, one vulture and two stray black bears before it perished. My glassmaker got the kill, but it was a relatively dirty one (they only chopped off a toe from the beast, but before that, an artery in the foot had been damaged). But the cause of death remains unknown.
But looking through the log, I find that the battle reports sound really very good:
The Forgotten Beast scratches The Buzzard in the upper body, tearing apart the muscle, shattering the left true rib and bruising the heart!
An artery has been opened by the strike!
A tendon in the left true rib has been torn!
and of course:
The Forgotten Beast scratches The Stray Black Bear in the head and the severed part sails off in an arc!
The Stray Black Bear (Tame) has been struck down.
The Buzzard gives in to pain.
The Recruit hacks The Forgotten Beast in the left front leg with his *iron battle axe*, tearing apart the skin!
The Forgotten Beast kicks The Dog in the upper body with its left front paw, bruising the muscle and tearing apart the upper spine's nervous tissue!
The Forgotten Beast kicks The Dog in the left front paw with its right rear paw, shattering the bone!
The Forgotten Beast kicks The Dog in the left front leg with its left rear paw, shattering the bone!
The Recruit attacks The Forgotten Beast but It jumps away!
The Forgotten Beast kicks The Dog in the upper body with its right front paw, bruising the muscle and shattering the right false rib!
The Forgotten Beast kicks The Dog in the lower body with its right front paw, bruising the muscle and bruising the left kidney!
The Vulture bites The Forgotten Beast in the upper body, denting the skin!
The Vulture latches on firmly!
No dwarves got injured in this fight as far as I can tell, much less killed! And this although the beast was impressive in many ways (the complete battle report is quite long as the shell blocked a lot of the blows).
Because of this, I have decided to continue this fortress until either the goblins or the giant cave spiders overrun it.
