Anilrimtar, Glorycastles. First .18 fort, first fort in a good while, too.
Deciding to bring a handful of cages with me on embark payed off big time, as I managed to capture an entire herd of elephants - 4 males and 3 females - before Autumn. Trying some new fortress designs to keep things interesting; this one is less sprawling, with a square-shaped main hallway about midway up a mountain. Was a little lax in my duties and as yet all the workshops are still outside, but my miners found an enormous gold vein when digging out the farms. I am beginning to wish that you could equip tamed creatures with various articles of clothing or jewelry, because I really want gold encrusted elephants.

make chains, do whatever you want with them, build restraints, chain animals you want decorated, deconstruct (using [ q ] > [ x ]) and your pet gets a collar! Nothing really, it just subtracts from value and fulfills no purpose, but still fun  ;D

Stuff that's going on in Dreamnets:

I made what will probably turn out to be a very silly mistake - I appointed the title of Baron to my former militia commander, who I've retired due to injuries.  Unfortunately, he has been in a hospital bed for years, so he probably won't be doing any of his new duties, like meeting with liaisons.

I just got a big migrant wave with some really useful dwarfs.  Unfortunately, I was unable to let them in, because my fortress is under siege (okay, really just an ambush, but I can't handle it right now) by goblins.  I don't expect any of the migrants to survive, but we'll see.
Also, a Giantess just showed up.  Maybe she'll kill those goblins for me.

A minotaur arrived. he pounded a nobody (bowyer) into the ground, before dodging some serrated steel discs. Uh-oh says I, time to wake up the military...

"The minotaur it struck in the head by the flying *<<*cow bone bolt*>>*, breaking the skull and tearing the brain.

one damed bone bolt. i wouldnt really have minded, but it appears that they are sentient so cant be butchered. no minotaur biscuits for me.

By god. THE FUN.
First time I've ever had an ambush. And I got 3 at once, thankfully my clevelry placed random elephant catchin cage traps warning me soon enough for me to rouse the military. Thankfully this means that I'll get seiges eventually I was begining to wonder if i had acces to goblin civs :)

Forgotten Beasts seem to be akin to Toady playing Russian Roulette with your fortress, as they can be anything from harmless giant worms made of mud to necrotic-gas spewing nigh-invunerable iron hydras of doom.

My greatest 'trap' design ever:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She took on 5 ambushes by herself, all at once, with her only injury being a bruised leg that healed a minute later. The goblins weren't so lucky, even though they all attacked at once, crossbowmen included.

I trained her on weakened goblins, then gave her exceptional and masterwork adamantine armor after she hit 100 notable kills or so. I also created a water tank to train her swimming up. She now goes spear-fishing for pond grabbers, who seem to show up a lot.

Just wanted to brag a little bit :P

Big siege. Many dead. Lost 2 marksdwarfs (the cretins didn't shoot a bolt), and my best potential badass, Zan Kadolevost, to a trap, because he had a relapse of the mysterious numbing disease. Also lost Zan Number (!), my broker (but I liked him! He had the most perfect name!). One artifact was completed during the whole event... a green glass earring, Lensarrow, a possession. Oh, and I had to refill the hospital well for security reasons; the outpost liaison was smart enough to get out of it in time, but not the human diplomat. There is a friggin' human corpse in the water. Oh, and of course, another violent pandemic of same ol' FB disease that I swear is like the flu.
Basically, I went from 199 to 165-170? in a few months, including the big euthanizing campaign and many accidents. I'm extremely surprised no one went berserk since the start of the siege. For once, I'm waiting for migrants. And I know they won't be coming. I need experienced fighters so badly to replace the lost ones.

Long story short, long streak of misfortune that may not stop before the fort crumbles to its end. It all started when I forcefully enrolled two 12-year-old in the army, all while building a giant statue to Zuglar, god of children. Officially declaring that, during the year 266, Windslap got cursed. Hey, I now have an in-universe reason to complete the statue in the glory of the Oar of Yearlings... the mist generator is nice, but it is not helping the most depressed citizens.

I too just had a siege.  90% were caught in the traps of my poorly designed defence, and I lost three dwarves in total.  However, when the dust settled, I found that over half of my dwarves--a grand total of 54-- are clamoring for the 16 spots in the hospital.  Mostly with bruised or cut legs.  What happened?  Maybe the cave blob menace...?  Still, work on the baron's olivine tower has slowed to a crawl.

EDIT: Immediately after that, an Ettin arrived and was captured by our cage trap.  Time to build an arena!

Gemspike has finished perhaps its most important project in it's 4 years of history, the completion and activation of the repeater and military danger room. It is now employed in making our militia commander a real soldier instead of a fishery worker with an axe that we send out to kill unconscious trolls, and making all our marksdwarves into improperly equipped hammerdwarves.

My latest fort is now something that I'm proud of, mostly because it's the most durable fort I've had in a long time. The defenses orignally consisted of a single drawbridge and a lever. The first ambush happened right aroudn the time of a migrant wave, so I ended up filling up a few dozen coffins on that alone.

Since then I have trained up one and a half squads via danger room (which has impaled half a dozen pets and a few babies), and have happily whiped the floor with each successive wave so far. Goblins are my main source of weapons and armor, which means I have 2-3 lashers which just kick butt. Due to their sun-sickness when fighting, each squad now goes outside and guards the entrance for 3 months out of the year. I've also recently finished expanding a lake to the point that I can flood out invadors. A 3-wide corridor can be closed at both ends by floodgates, and then filled with water if the need arises. Future plans include tying a stray cat as bait within.

I'm most proud of the location of my legendary items though. They are in full view of anyone in the (large) hallway, but inaccessible save for a small winding path through several cage traps (weapon traps are a future addition), and a single bridge (future retractable) guarded by a hunting dog. Skulls are turned into totems and are all in the pit below, making for a pretty secure and awesome storage place. I imagine this room in a game such as the Prince of Persia, with only extreme accrobatics and coolness factor does anyone get to the special items.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

That would be cruel, the FUN would be repeated and evil. until there is a way to disarm traps

All my animals are dropping dead from infection, I blame that forgotten Beast a year or so ago.

*the Hammer Lord who killed it has yellow wounds all over her body, but doesn't seem particularly bothered after some bedrest and surgery by a just drafted into the medical profession pump operator*

2nd autumn, goblin crossbowmen ambush. "Big deal", I said. Immediately i set a meeting zone behind them and watch gleefully as my war animals charge at it. Suddenly... a herd of unicorns spawned behind the gobbos!! Wha... THEY WORK WITH EACH OTHER, WTF!! So many casualties... dogs, a giant eagle and some lions has succumbed to the foul beasts. I was not pleased.
