Tetrahydrite? You're lucky.
I have only galena, cassiterite and garnierite on mine.

If you want iron, mineral scarcity will increase the availability of ores on a map, but not alter in what type of layer they will spawn.
Two of the three iron ores only spawn in sedimentary layers, and the third only in sedimentary and igneous extrusive.

If you embark on a tile that doesn't have either of these layers, you will not find iron no matter how low your mineral scarcity setting is.
Embraking on a tile that has flux stone increases the chance you will find iron there, but it's no guarantee either.

Now it is possible to tweak worldgen in such a way that you end up with more igneous extrusive and perhaps sedimentary layers as well, by toying with volcanism settings, and maybe erosion (less erosion = more sediment remains?)
I'm not an expert worldgen tweaker though, perhaps someone else can explain to you how to set up a more iron rich world.

EDIT: Note that it is not hard at all to get more iron than you need just by trading with the dwarven caravan.

EDIT: here's a wiki link that shows you which ores can be found in which layer: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Ore

EDIT: oh, you say you wouldn't be able to trade much if not for the fire clay. Are you aware of the wonders of cooked food trading? Or if you find that too cheesy, dyed cloth is great too, once your dyer and weaver level up a bit.

I think I might know the reason I get so little iron, in the pursuit of volcanoes I always put min volcanism to 5... Guessing that would effect it. I'll try removing that next time.

one of my metalworkers got an unhappy thought.

because one of their masterpieces was destroyed.

the masterpiece in question, was a crossbow bolt.

which was stuck in a goblin swordmaster.

who was burnt by a semi-tame dragon.

They will always get the unhappy thought for that. But the severity of it depends on how many masterpieces have been created by that dwarf. A weaponsmith who has crafted dozens of stacks of masterwork bolts is not going to be as unhappy about it as a dwarf who has it's only masterpiece destroyed.

At least that's how it used to work, not 100% sure if it still works like that since the addition of needs. Hard to tell, it's near impossible to get a dwarf unhappy nowadays.

You need to practically suffer a catastrophe now for them to even be rattled. I'm talking extended casualties over a short period (like, say, half your population deciding to climb because "oh, I can't wait for someone to path past me, I'd rather commit suicide by climbing with no climbing skill instead" and then fall to thier deaths at the bottom of your execution pit out of the blue when everyone was using the ramps just fine for literally years before.

And even then, a highly disciplined population may not be affected at all even by this - my militia in that incident if anything was taking things too well, and even started acting like fuckin' street judges whenever someone would attack other dwarves or animal (as three decapitated kids can attest when they tried to beat up a craftsdwarf during a tantrum in from of a swordmaster, who swiftly intervened.)

Vermin infestation. A bunch of skittering brains and demonic vile grubs got into my taverns stockpile and are now eating from it.

Fought off a weresloth also - noone's infected, thankfully. Only one swordswoman was mildly injured - recovered now though and is training with her colleagues.

Can't wait for the caravan to arrive, I need cats or some other vermin hunters.

My main military are all decently trained, mostly great or so in their skills and legendary fighters. Decided to give the militia a test, though. Instead of full iron plate with tons of leather layers, they simply have a wooden shield, iron helm and mail shirt, leather armor+leggings+gloves+boots+cloak, and either an iron spear or mace. They went up against a forgotten beast, one made of stone with nothing remarkable. One casualty, a weaver, and a bunch of injuries, but now everyone's got some experience under their belt. A similar beast with a thirst for blood, made of bone opal, was put down pretty fast by the elite military. Distributing dogs as necessary, and adding tigers to the better guys. Alas, the poor miners don't get any defense past their pick and clothing...

Oh god... A vile force of darkness... It's been so long... Not since 34.xx.... Ugh, this is going to be stressful. Hopefully not too many die...

I can only say do not expect similar results - a single master warrior can no-longer stand up to an army (or most of one) alone, merely delay them until someone gets a crippling hit in or a bite-shake.

I'm training up my militia to go out and start recovering interesting artifacts. Exalted, legendary amulets and mini-forges can stay where they are unless a dwarf in my fort lays claim to them, as can the innumerable legendary wooden swords to be found in elven retreats. I'm after artifact furniture, artifact steel weapons, clothes and armor, and good books. Any plunder which isn't put to use I'm going to add to my citizens-only museum (my main library is open to everyone, of course).

Speaking of good books, the stupid humans refused to bring me any for the first four years we traded. In an attempt to remedy this, I paid something like ten thousand gold Urists (that is the name of the currency, right?) for a crappy, blank quire. The following year, they finally did bring me about thirty books...but they were thirty copies of the same book. To add insult to injury, the prose was amateurish at best, so naturally I didn't buy any. Humans: as always, you're just the worst.

Book quality on caravans is strongly correlated to world gen ending year. Short worldgen? Don't expect many good books.

Well, kids and one roaming baby aside, we have two dorfs left, and a ton of monster slayers in the cavern... Our weapon smith, and our gem setter/clothier. 87 goblins vs 10 elite and 37 militia dorfs, goblins win. The miners made their stand in the tavern, along with a ton of bards and such, and the animal pack was what killed the last few goblins. I basically lost...

Heh, can't wait for sieges to come to my own fort. I think there's around 4 hostile civs around my fort, along with the normally non-hostile Tol'vir who are at war with my civ for some reason.

Several repeat visitors have been popping up, looking for info about some artifacts - no petitions yet though, was hoping to get some mercs or monster slayers to send down to the caverns.

Well, I can truly say my Fortress is a true Fortress.  We have been attacked by goblins (which I thought were all dead), by weres, by enemy Dwarves, by a necromancer with a small swarm of undead animals, by a megabeast that burned things, and the Elves are at war with me.  We had a smoke filled tavern, a Dwarf turn into a werebeast in one of the Hospital cells (I used drawbridges instead of doors), much of the levels are covered in vomit, blood, and ruined clothing, and many of my soldiers no longer care for life while the rest of the Fortress sometimes cancels what they are doing to weep for a lost family member or friend.  My museum has artifact books, items, and a elephant skull (just for the fun of it) on display.  Oh, and my manger got chased up a tree by a giant fly and I had to have it cut down to get her back down.  I have more bedrooms then Dwarves and my burial chamber is running out of room for the stones coffins, wooden caskets, and memorial slabs.

I have had all the normal problems with making soap, keeping track of my seeds, and trying to figure out why a Dwarf can't find a pathway to a job or item when there is nothing blocking it and the Barrow was set up to cover all of the underground parts of it.

How long has it been since 40.xx was released? Now that I know I can be beaten in DF, time to get serious like I used to in 34.xx. No more sitting around micro managing my farm to get max plump helmets or spending all my embark points on pineapples, it's time for the dwarves to go to war. Embed ourselves in the side of a mountain and have every able body spend their lives in the mine, unable bodies sent to become crossbowdwarves cause those hurt now, and every civilian spend two months of the year at least training to become soldiers when the time is right. Fortified walls and pieces of the fortress dedicated to fighting the goblins as they come in, a prisoner section for sacrifices to the clowns when we unleash them... It's been years since I fought the HFS. This is going to be fun.

They've had 200 years to get their act together, but thanks (-:
