I finally got the new military working. This is a triumphant event.

My fort is being slaughtered. The first two levels are overrun - I'm pulling everyone back to the 6th level, but I think we're pretty much screwed. The goblins are very well equipped, and by 'everyone' I mean the eight able-bodied survivors.

If someone had just pulled the goddamn lever...

Also to complicate things, there's a floodgate open for no reason that I can see. It's going to start pouring water down my central staircase shortly. Not that retreating to the lower levels is an option given the rampant magma men and such, but if there does happen to be enough survivors to warrant continuing it would be nice if the lower levels weren't underwater.

... but yeah, this fort is dead.

Do you still have any weapons and armor? Additionally, is there a weapon master leading those goblins?

Because if not, yeah, that fort is boned.

Yeah, it's over. Complete slaughter - as far as last stands go it was a bit pathetic. Most of the recruits were still running around trying to pick up equipment.

Oh well. I learnt a lot from this fort, and I suppose it was a more glorious end than dying of thirst, which was the next most likely scenario.

One entrance, man. Let them pile up and build a rampart of their bodies.

Some stuff happened, my dry moat was finished (no inner walls yet), more stuff happened, then some chaos. I should mention that my garbage dump is immediately behind my main drawbridge. From gamelog.txt with annotations (combat reports removed for space):

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Bonus! The story of Feb the kitten's battle:
The Savanna Titan bites The Kitten in the head, bruising the muscle, jamming the skull through the brain and tearing apart the brain!
The Kitten has been knocked unconscious!
Savanna titan extract is injected into the The Kitten's cat blood!
Feb Erushlash‰d, Kitten (Tame) has been struck down.

A note, before I tell my story, I am using mixmod. My world was genned with 100 civs, so each season I get many merchants of many species at once. I found that they often bring exotic animals and made it a priority to procure these in an effort to breed up a zoo and a guard for the fortress. One of the species of merchants actually works like the dwarven caravan and brings what I ask of them. One year later, I have my 2 Rhinos, a komodo dragon, a 2 legged golden gecko, a hyena, a giraffe, and some other odd critters. Invaders are turned off until my defenses are set up(I know I'm a sissy, but I'd rather have an efficient fortress first). Cats are being bred for the purposes of food (duh) and perhaps cavern exploration. I may send more dangerous animals into the caverns, depending on what I find when I breach it.

Been playing CivForge. Not quite sure I like it because it's an absolute pain in the ass dealing with all the ambushers. Every season there are at least 2-3 squads from three or four different civs butchering the caravans. On top of that Chaos dwarves are trap immune. Extremely frustrating; I haven't even gotten to the point where I can start fiddling with the alchemy and the new metals. My two military squads don't have enough time to train up to a useful level before they need to be called into action, plus using the dregs of weapons and armor from previous invaders isn't very effective. Now I'm even getting siegers despite not yet having broken 70 pop or 1m wealth. I don't want to close off entirely because I still need some immigrants and trading.

May end up restarting and try to maximize immigrants, then hunker down until I can get to the advanced metals. My only other experience with unforgiving military threats was Dig Deeper, and at least there the ogres would siege you directly instead having to deal with untold number of ambush squads every season.

I am trying my best to get the military working in this fort but its a bitch. I can find like 4 different places where i can tell my dwarves to train, but which one actually makes them do it? My main defense is masses of cage traps in the entrance but they work very well. Got about 15 goblins waiting to be dropped into my new marksdwarf-trainer-pit =D
Speaking of marksdwarves that's a whole chapter in itself. Getting them to pick up bolts instead of furiously bashing eachother with the crossbows and hanging around refusing orders seems very hard.

For my first time ever in DF i struck adamantium!! (probably because of the new patch =P) using my best armorsmiths/weaponsmiths to forge some of it.
So i finally get a full set of adamantium armor and a battle axe and i tell one of my dwarves specifically to use this and that weapon/armor item. What happens is he keeps running between the armor/weapon stockpile and the waterskin stockpile dumping all his items, then picking them up, then dumping them again etc. How the hell am i supposed to get a decent military force up and running when they just run back and forth with all their gear instead of training?!? Frustrating to say the least.

I am also just about to tap in to the world of burrows to see how that works. I think a good idea for your "Battle-burrow" is to make sure there are food and drinks avalible inside the burrow area, or they'll die of thirst/hunger if the burrow is activated for too long. Maybe I'll build a panic-room area that can be blocked off from the rest of the fortress in case things go bad.

BTW it seems FB's can't be cage trapped? I'm rather sure that the one I tried to capture couldn't fly but he skipped past 5 cage traps anyway.
Well i guess...

...o crap a goblin siege... I guess they somehow heard about the stories of the dreaded goblin pit where bolts are lodged deep in goblin eyes (i was so tempted to send in a melee dwarf into the pit when it happened just to have him twist it around in the wound, but I couldn't be arsed at the time :P)

might report back later o_O

Apparently one of the migrants so far put up quite a fight, as Ozstag has a abdomen and a right first leg.

e- And there's the pump operator down...

e2- The forgotten beast Ukla Uklautest has come! A towering serpent composed of salt. It has wings and it has a gaunt appearance.

e3- There goes the novice diagnostician. Next victim: the bowyer.

e4 - bowyer gave him a cephalothorax to go with his abdomen.

e5-
Sibrek Ibrukvucar, migrant cancels Sleep: Interrupted by Savanna Titan.
Sibrek Ibrukvucar, migrant has been struck down.

That leaves the bone carver.

...And there she goes. No migrants, no problem. Except the titan.

DEFINITELY FINAL EDIT: Ozstag Lakesplashed the Bearded Seeds has found the elven "diplomat" while the latter was leaving unhappily. I wonder if the titan will kill her like it did the caravan.

Hope so. That'll show the pointy eared carp lover what happens when you leave unhappily.

Bitch got away. Spider slaughtered the human caravan (took a lot of damage), a bull calf, and finally got killed by my first goblin ambush squad, composed of macegobs under a hammergob. The ambushers were going after the bull calf and were themselves ambushed by the titan. No goblin casualties.

I thought my military was doing well.  But there's the lack of suitable metal for armor.

One goblin ambush, I lose the entire military.  And 17 others.  Some might have been lost to the flood-the-entrance defense.  But I stand by it, it's the Dwarves who failed!
