The first human caravan "arrived" but nobody and nothing was in it. Yet I could still send goods to the depot and send my broker there, so they didn't just turn back at the end of the map. A while later the nonexistent traders started to pack up to go home.

I'm digging into a cliff face and my miners are busy turning the steep slope into a sheer cliff. One of them got stuck clinging to a wall when the ground under him was dug away. So he climbed up 10 or so levels up to the top of the sheer cliff, then sideways to the undug slope and back down and around to the base of the workface. I don't think he understood the concept of climbing /down/.

That was after one of my miners spent two whole seasons in the tavern, socialising, listening to stories, reciting poetry, socialising again. Eventually he got a flutter of excitement from performing, and then went back to work.

Ironborn Diaries 6: Ironvale (Ironroad Quest)

Spring 204 to Summer 204

Our civ, The Wet Lancers is still at war with the Goblins, but so far, there has been no attack in this outpost, Ironvale.

We build a building around the wagon, and named it The Wagon House.  It is in the crossroad of the planned Ironroad.  So we will build up and around, ever expanding outwards.

Spring 204

Nine 3x3 bedrooms are furnished on the 3rd floor of the Wagon House.

As soon as the Brewery is added adjacent to the south, the 2nd floor (open space), surface (wagon), basement (kitchen)of the Wagon House, and the Brewery becomes part of the citizen only tavern.

A Trade Depot is to the north of the barrack, which is north of the Wagon House.
The Elf Traders from Rifa arrived and we seized whatever useful goods we find before any formal greetings, and so the merchants left in haste.

The Kitchen is planned to dominate the first basement of the Wagon House.  To the right of the kitchen is the turkey pen, and 8 shared bedrooms.

Three fertile turkey hens produced a batch of 37 fertilized eggs waiting to hatch.
We anticipate some migrants, so an 8 shared bedrooms are dug and planned to be floored and furnished.

Temporary forges smelted our initial treasures of 1 platinum nugget, and handful of gold and silver nuggets.  Some electrum bars are made.
The Hospital has been dug, and we will use the aquifer for an indoor well with the following components: native gold block, electrum chain, electrum bucket, and silver mechanism. A dozen gold goblets are made.

Plans have started for the waterfall mister via water pump stack z+8 high.

The Forge area west of the wagon is walled, further west is the future site of the butcher's.

Farm plots are set with Loom, Clothier below the Brewer.  A Quern, Presser is next to the turkeys. The Kitchen is open.

Summer 204
The 8 shared bedrooms are furnished and open for claiming.
Plans to breach the Aquifer starts using pump stack and water reactor.
The Hospital is floored and furnished. There are 16 beds for the hospital, and a 3x3 for the CMD.

7 migrants from Misty Iron (Ironlake) arrived.  None of them peasants.  The miners wields decorated steel picks, and the wood cutters wields decorated steel battle axes.

The "Iron River Axe" squad starts training on 204-05-17.

New nobles are assigned:
Record Keeper, fk Axe Datan
Broker, Miner Sigun
Chief Medical Dwarf, Brewer Lokum
Manager, rk Lasher Obok came arrived without his iron whip.
A new Expedition Leader, Miner Unib
Commander Ment retains his position.

The long process of building a below-ground security system is going a lot faster than the long process of building an above-ground security system, because we have 32 adults now instead of 7.  The main limiting factor is having enough masterwork magma-safe mechanisms.  I may soon need to start making steel mechanisms, or engineer some obsidian.

Our scholars have written two more books, both of them just as entertainingly self-absorbed as the first two were.

Our population is now 75, so we're getting close to the point where the 15 years spent building the fort's entryway is going to become important.  Our military is small - only 8 dwarves, and two of them are new recruits - but I'm not worried about anything except a titan.  Time will tell.

Uh... my low value, low pop (12 dwarves only, 2 residents) surface fort in mirthful biome saw a siege with 20 crossbowgoblins today. I was very much not prepared for this. Luckily my militia was able to handle this without problem, but the prospect of larger sieges with me having only a little outpost does not thrill me.

In Stonecastle, I broke the siege after my marksdwarves killed like two goblins. I guess one must have been the leader. But they broke right through all the cage traps, so I now have quite a few prisoners, including a human with a steel shield. Odd. Also, the six-legged stegosaurid was killed by a blind cave ogre, who then succumbed to its wounds. So that cavern is free, except it isn't because there's a cave dragon there I'm trying to trap. Speaking of which, the GCS was killed by a giant worm. Fuck me sideways.

But on the bright side, rhino calves! Also, giant warthogs, and the giant skink is sitting on eggs. And I caught that cave dragon!

I had exactly one more puppy than needed for the Shield of Dog, which is okay because I'll probably need replacements. I've also resumed industrial diorite block production, because my goal for this fort is that someday the whole surface will be one enormous fortification.

A marksdwarf was killed in the third cavern by a blind cave ogre. It was prevented form doing further harm by brave citizens, who exhausted it so the military could arrive. They then hunted down the other ogres.

On a more pleasant note, the marksdwarves had themselves a BOAR HUNT, in the form of a giant warthog that got past the traps and was scaring the mechanics. It was a success, though I think I'll send the spearmaster along next time. For extra BOAR HUNTING fun.

A mechanic was possessed and made a diorite mechanism. My future baroness, an engraver, went secretive and made a figurine worth 130,000☼ of a roc killing a human with two pictures of the founding of Stonecastle on it. She's my future baroness because she doesn't like anything (no mandates) and she has a husband but no children, meaning the heirs will grow up in the fort.

I had a pair of large rats, but the female died on the new year. I think domestic large rats are impossible. Their lives are just too short. Also, an elven diplomat showed up unannounced, told us to stop cutting trees, and went to party in the Grand Golden Hall. Bitch.

Apparently warthogs need grass. I've moved them to the surface pasture with the rhinos. I've also caught a breeding pair of draltha, so those go to the surface too.

The Temple Hall is now functional! All the temples have been designated and dwarves are now worshiping there. The smoothing and engraving still need to be done, but that can wait. I don't have an army of engravers like in Bastiongate.

EDIT: Also the well is working, so the dwarves no longer have to go to the brook to drink. The tavern-goers keep drinking all the booze! Also also the cage trap ring is 3/4 complete.

Are you playing a mod? How do you get goblin sieges with that low population? Or has it been changed in recent version?

Project Superbowl II has, at last, reached ground level.

It is only a matter of weeks before I can put my devilish plan into action.

No. I just use a fresh 43.03 and I was definitely surprised. I made a custom world, but I did not touch the siege requirements.

So far the magma moat of the Bronzesummits (irronicly named because I had a hunch i could make bronze here but was very wrong) has claimed at least a dozen dwarves in 2 years there is a nice pile of steel axes and mail in the moat. I would estimate the moat has only killed a few goblins. Magma moats not very effective. However i dumped the entire indoor refuse pile into the retracting bridge and dumped it all in the moat and realized how excellent of a trash bin the moat is!

I prepared a huge ornate dormitory in the tavern for vampire defense... this is the first time i prepared for a vampire and did not get any.

Everyone has masterwork clothing im pretty much bored with this fortress so im leaving it to it's own devices and starting a great city of the dead

a fully functional fortress but... made for the dead all the living dwarves live above ground and below ground is coffin bedrooms fully furnished with goods of that dead dwarf.

Now I just need a way to get dwarves killed in there and ghosts to stick around there.

also release caged monsters in there

Ironborn Diaries 6: Ironvale (Ironroad Quest)

Autumn and Winter 204

It seems unusual that we have not gotten any attack from either goblin who we are at war with, nor from the last tower neighbor.
We have an above ground (4z) waterfall / mister for the barracks!
We have 7 more migrants from the new mountainhome, Ironlake.
They are skilled in military, but we do not have the equipment produced, so the priority now is to start the magma forges.

Spoiler: Details (click to show/hide)

The god he's praying to is Tishak Splatteredbone, god of nightmares. Goddamn terrifying, which is why he has a temple here.

Life is going well in Stonecastle. The giant skinks hatched and now I have 19 hatchlings running around. More puppies were born, so I have even more extra dogs for the Shield. I caught some more giant tortoises, and these ones aren't in their shells. The elves brought the second half of a pair of foxes and a pair of cheetahs.

Vulture people attacked, but most were caught in the cage trap ring. Also, the marksdwarves are out of bolts! I think I have enough copper from the sieges, so I'm setting copper bolts on repeat.

My trap line captured some giant gray squirrels.  I held onto them, because my animal trainers needed experience and because I like to see that blue Expert on the overall training screen.  Well, it turns out that giant gray squirrels are born adults, so we had a squirrelsplosion.  The fort has been taking it easy for the past year or so while we slaughter squirrels, so that there will be no shortage of haulers for the meat.  We're up to almost 2000 units of low-quality squirrel meat and still not finished with the stupid things.

Our population is up to 83, and I have my fingers crossed for a roc.

They don't get trained in cages, unless they revert all the way to wildness.  Since the objective was to get to Expert training knowledge, I instead chained them, and later pastured the overflow.  It was when they started battling each other in the pasture every time a trainer would stop by that I actually looked at the number of them and realized I had a problem.

I reckon I could have thrown them into the magma pit instead of slaughtering them, but that seemed wasteful.

I'm on a hot salty wetland (hurr hurr hurr), and knowing all the frames the multi-tile trees must be sucking up, i decided the solution was fire, and lots of it.

Errors were made.

Turns out that fire causes trees to collapse. Golden, as far as was concerned. Except it turns out that tree collapses make a hole in the floor... one that can never be repaired.

As it happens, very few trees were destroyed by the blaze. clear cutting was the solution all along. But now the fire has been, half the trees collapse when cut down, complete with holes in floors and occasionally braining the odd woodcutter.

I thought it was impossible to destroy a natural floor without destroying the z-level below it. As it stands, a lot of restorative work will need to be done to make the floor even again.

Truly, trees are the one true enemy of the dwarf.
