Decided to make a fort in my Earth-based world. Colonized Great Britain as the group called the Kingdoms of Uniting, belonging to a dying human civ, the Kingdom of Lungs, to somewhat revive them as well.

Nothing TOO exciting so far. Bought a mutant and a jaguar from some civs that came by to trade - thankfully I came by some higher value materials early. Only have 3 buildings so far, though, going a bit slow since I'm doing an aboveground fort - two regular living houses with workshops and a tavern. A mayor's house is also in the works.

Started up a new volcano embark. Due to some planning mistakes on my the overseer's part, the volcano wasn't secured properly, and magma crabs wandered into the fort.

Well, some filthy, smelly tree hugging socialist hippies elves came by, along with their diplomat.

The """"negotiating"""" went by swimmingly

And so did the """trade"""

Looted some stuff from them, let one of them go so that he can tell his buddies to bring a squad of soldiers next time.

Don't forget the magma. Magma is always one of the best trade exports!

Now if only merchants could take on the "brings caravan guards" token after enough casualties.

That, and if guards would ever react to having your military target a merchant.

I've started up a new fortress, and i've developed a housing plan for the first hundred or so dwarves.

So, I've got an old fort (v0.34) that I keep going back to, playing for awhile, and then playing a more current version. It's decades old, home to multiple megaprojects, and the general scheme has been to just have fun seeing how overpowered I could make my dorfs. Naturally, I used trade to get infinite adamantine, and I've got 10 squads fully equipped with ☼candy armor and weapons☼ (one squad of each of the normal melee dwarves--axe, sword, spear, hammer, mace--5 more of marksdwarves... I've got an additional squad of axes just because axes are the dwarfiest, in my opinion, but they aren't fully equipped... also, maces, hammers, and crossbows aren't candy). I've got more than 50 furnace operators from devoting a couple dozen magma smelters to melting down coins for years, several legendary armorsmiths, and while I had a few Axe Lords, I've finally embraced danger rooms, just so I can get that satisfying feeling of completion, even though the FPS death is upon me (well, FPS has been pretty low for awhile). There have just been too many projects and experiments in this fort, and it's too big (about 350). There's a giant cheetah-splosion from a breeding pair I bought from the elves several years back, and the only reason I even keep a trade depot any more is to just get rid of stuff. So it's about time to end the fort. But I just... need... to... get... them... trained... (legendary)

Then I'll invade HFS.
Before the update, I had to rush an HFS invasion because I wanted closure and my FPS was dying after 3rd cavern exploration. It was tough, and I inevitably lost, but my legendary axedwarf surpassed all presumptions I had about someone named "Virginspear".

I got a bunch of migrants and recruited some random gelder. About ten seconds later, he got hit with a secretive mood, and now he just kinda sits around in the corner of the church all day, apparently unsatisfied with my workshops.

Meanwhile, I've devised an atom-smasher trap in the central hallway of my fortress that, when completed, will allow me to vaporize anyone who gets inside (and probably the remains of the guard dog.)

Not the point.

My early defences were meant to consist of that wall and the water from the streams.

That ain't no water anymore, heh.

It just took me far too long to solve a series of vampiric murders. It was the butler human law-giver diplomat!

Oddly, he disappeared (simply left?) just as I was putting my plan to contain him into action.

Bastard. I'll be ready if he dares to sure his ugly pink face again.

You could get a bunch of miners and try channeling out the ice, then channel down a layer under that to make the riverbed deeper. Maybe that would lower the river's water level when the ice thaws, so next time the water freezes over, the moat becomes a 1-z level deep dry moat with a floor of ice.

Or you could build walls around it instead, I guess, but that sounds less dangerous and more boring.

Nothing's happening in my fort, since the hard drive DF was installed on had decided not to be read by the motherboard.
