I've gotten in the habit of building a 3-tile wide paved roads to the edge of the map from my depot, just to make sure the path stays open.

Does it force caravan to appear on the road (seems to be not very useful otherwise)? If so, what if road would be in cavern?

I don't think so.
They can leave via the cavern, however.

Should we have embarked right next to a goblin fortress?

It does not force the caravan to appear on the road. It's mainly useful for ensuring that a path clear of trees will exist permanently.

Ah, ok then. The problem is that they still can appear at the completely blocked edge of the map (far away from the road), that's why I claimed that it's not very useful...

If there is one or more paths to your depot, the caravan will appear on one of them. If there is only one path, like because trees grew to block every path but your paved road, then the caravan will appear on the paved road. But if there are other paths, the caravan may appear on one of them instead of your road.

If you want to force the caravan to appear on your road, just block all the other paths.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Thanks, I see now. So, having paved road to the edge doesn't force caravan to appear there, but guarantees that they always can pass to the depot... Make sense then.

Finished a ten story or so statue of a dwarf swinging a hammer. Lesson learned: Big statues are kind of a pain to put together, but they can look spiffy. Now to get around to downloading DFHack so I can see it in 3D...

Whelp. A recruit was found dead, drown, in the aquifer outside the barracks. They appear to be holding a "Rye seeds roast" owned by the captain of the guard.
No one wants to say anything, but I'm suspecting foul play. There are no reports of combat or sparring that they were involved with.

Edit: It would seem that it was the captain's own husband who drown... Odd. I guess that rules out the Captain herself.

Nope, it turns out he got shoved straight through a loam wall by someone who was actually sparring.

Just had a two hundred strong goblin siege. They had trolls and beak dogs. I thought that's a challenge for my military of two squads of infantry and two squads of marksdwarves. Fortunately the goblins didn't have a change against my *candy* wielding military. Only the whip and scourge wielder's cut through my platinum armor like butter. So i quess that "feature" is still present in the latest version.

My Duke, now called king consort apparently does not even want to mention his 'demotion' in his autobiography:
