What am I supposed to do with a third artifact bed?

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Trap_design#Artifact_awe_trap
Hm.....I already have several traplines baited with statues, but those are all just cage traps. I could use it to lure in Forgotten Beasts.....

The elves have given me a hefty quota of 152 trees this year. Let's see if I can exceed it in the underground forests before they even leave!

I really enjoy my drainable, magmacrab powered dodge-into-magma-trap. Saves alot of time when I want the dwarfpower for other projects. Now I only need more magma crabs. 3 were not enhough even with the help of a few weapontraps with training weapons. 2 gobbos made it through.

Using a GCS I now have a few caged forgotten beasts to play with as well. Fun times.

The tree quota agreement with the elves was successfully violated before the elves even left, and that strange mood produced a millstone; I guess I'll set up a windmill to power it. Anyone know how to check wind direction without building a windmill?

I was't aware that wind had a direction, as far as I know it just has strength (or lack thereof). And the only way I know to find out is to build a windmill and see how much power it makes.

Or is wind direction something new?

Edit: Hmmm, according to the wiki: "The power produced by each windmill depends on the latitude at which your fortress is located within the world." I hadn't heard that before, but I suppose it could be true. To be honest, I never remember what latitude my forts are at.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I distinctly remember years ago having to rebuild a windmill because it was facing the wrong way. However, when I built the windmill today, it didn't specify any sort of direction, so modern dwarfs must use a windmill design that will work no matter which way the wind is blowing.

I've ordered a lot more weapon traps built from leftover large serrated green glass discs and newly made obsidian shortswords. These traps probably won't get very many goblins looking to siege my fort, but they'll get plenty who are running away from a broken siege.

I believe that I've won the lottery of embarks. Not only did I find a warm spot with a brook, volcano, sand, heavy foresting and like 5 different ores on the surface that's perfect for a megaproject idea I've been toying with...

Not on the surface, does fireclay occur in the cavern soils? I haven't checked those yet because I'm trying to keep my wealth down for now.

I can't tell to be honest, it's all covered in moss. But if the embark says you have clay, then keep looking around your surface soils, it might be there.

The elves just sold me a gigantic panda. Bugger costs double the price of giant animal species, at 1020 dwarfbucks.
But, at least it's trainable. If I'm really lucky they sold me a pregnant female, if not, I'll just hope they'll bring me a mate for it some other time.

It's going to starve because you can't get any bamboo for it and you're going to wish you had butchered it.

Windmill is up, though I think I didn't need it. 2 floors below my 2 10x10 "above ground" farms (one for hemp and one for whip vines, all year round) I have 4 stills, 7 farmer's workshops, 6 querns, 6 screw presses and now 1 very, very expensive mill. My farmers are processing/milling/brewing/whatever plants so fast that, though my hemp/whip vine stockpile isn't empty yet, farmers are bringing up other plants from a great distance below to be processed.

Summer came, and so did the goblins. Haven't got all the new traps up yet, but I've got enough.

Yeah it's starving. Sadly, I already assigned it to a dwarf, so no butchering possible :P

poor panda :(

Also I had a breeding pair of gcs's. A BREEDING PAIR. I had them both proper trained, pastured deep underground - the male was quite distracted already, placed some next boxes. The first three were claimed almost instantly by birdlikes (giant cassowary, giant barn owl, elk bird) pastured way elsewhere. Clearly, not enough nest boxes. I placed two more. A blind cave ogre appeared, toppled the two empty ones, then the barn owl, then the cassowary and the fucking beast SQUASHED THE FEMALE GCS. AWURGH. AARRGH. MAY A HUNDRED CLOWNS ENTERTAIN IT FOR A THOUSAND YEARS IN THE NETHERLIFE

Of course all three the bco's have been lashed well and truly but AAUWHUGHUHGHRG.  :'( :'(

Giant cave spiders (that is what you're talking about right?) don't lay eggs (unless you modded them to) they just birth out horrendous and fully deadly adults at the training level of the parent and can never be truly tamed.
