I just learned the hard way that if you cut somebody out of a tree and that person get's injured it can be viewed as an attack by the woodcutter, which then makes the woodcutter the enemy of everybody. So now, instead of have one idiot dwarf dehydrate in a tree, I've got one idiot dwarf with a crushed arm and major blood loss and one dwarf slaughtered by my Axe Dwarfs on his way back into the fort after doing a good deed. Friggin awesome.

Oh. Oh wow. The one time I tried that my expedition leader and my outpost liaison both plummeted to a splatty death so I scummed the shit out of my save :P Since then I just build/dig stairs up to their level

Fort construction has stalled because I hit the cavern layer before expected. Not used to regional flat embarks. I can relocate most of my plans, but I have to use 2 z-levels of constructions to finish my double-helix waterfall design + housing. It's 26x26 wide. I haven't even got my forges set up yet, and worse my civ doesn't even have iron or high boots! I can only hope my embark has iron, or that goblinite is generous once my military is properly set up.

A human bowman joined me. I can't imagine how his needs woul conflict with my crossbowsquads, but oh well. Turns out his wife also joined me (swordsman)... turns out he shot a kea in my previous fort on this world, Dodokor, Claspdrank. And I actually remember that. He got stuck in a murky pond, and from that murky point he shot the feathered villain!

New map and my mountainhome is holed up in a desert, not terribly bad, large tracts of clear dirt for ease of FPS without worrying so much about growth and animals walking in.

I managed to find a location nearby that was also desert with *perfectly* flat terrain, unfortunately that same area is a ettin lair (something to catch for later, hopefully for a dungeon of some sorts) caverns and general base design clear sailing.

Initial base established, im setting up exterior bridge walls, including a special pitting area (as well as a conventional caravan route entrance) for breeding experiments. (going to try to artificially raise the population of animals by pitting wild offspring from the environment and the caverns topside, with any luck my embark will be infested with beasties if the cavern creatures actually leave the perimeter).

Setting up forges down near the magma, since I don't have enough wood on the map to go with charcoal. Dug out the magma chamber, put in floodgates to control the flow into the chamber, dug a channel to let it flow. Then I realized I hadn't installed the door to block the access hallway into the chamber. Oh well, it's just a short hallway to the stairs up to the forge room, not a big deal if those stairs fill up with magma, no one will ever need to go down them, and the magma won't go up them. But it was sure taking a long time for the chamber to get rid of all the 1/7s and fill up. Then I realized that those stairs don't just go up, they also go dooooown from level -98, where the magma chamber is, to -144, where the miners hit semi-molten rock. Plus there are 15 tile long side tunnels every 5 levels that were used to explore to find the top of the magma sea. It's going to take a while to fill all that up before I can get these forges in operation.

*sigh*

At least no one died.

Hmm, interesting idea. I don't have any plumbing handy to get water to the stairs, and by the time I get it set up, the stairs will probably be full. Plus, I'm a little hesitant to risk flooding my future forges in the process, and rushing to get it set up would probably end up doing just that. I don't think setting up a pond zone and having dwarves throw buckets of water would be sufficient, or would it?

Yeah, I had a fish cleaner die the same way about a week ago. Gotta watch out for those blocked tiles in some workshops.

Somehow I suspect you're a little more annoyed at losing a jeweler than I was about losing a fish cleaner. They're about a dime a dozen in my forts.

I don't do jewels, just like having at least two workshops of everything.

Heck, they have it worse than Fish whatevers, as those at least get to be Scholars with menial work exemption, just like my nobles. Jewelers are just... there. Not really needed and not really wanted.

I got attacked by a goblin "siege", which turned out to be a bunch of bow-goblins and a goblin thief, perhaps these are the goblin "snatchers" who come to steal your children and brainwash them. Fortunately no children were stolen as i quickly ordered everyone inside and my military made short work of them, with no losses.

Alas, soon after, my fortress was attacked by a wereskunk. My Legendary Carpenter(one of my founding dwarves), was dumping corpses at the edge of the map, he was swiftly killed by the monster(my first death in the fort) who then proceeded to attack his lover(another founding dwarf), who was standing not too far away. The were beast knocked her unconscious, but then rather than killing her it kept bashing her in the head with a shoe until it eventually transformed back into a human and fled into the hills. After being patched up at my hospital(the injuries were minor), i walled her in an old mining shaft to see if she was infected, and fortunately when the full moon came around she wasn't, so thats good.

To prevent an event like this happening again i am building a atom-smasher next to my fort, so dwarves don't have to travel far to dump corpses.

Finally got far enough in designing industry pods and an automatic water cannon that gets by without power (exploit ramps only).
New fort is a combo of the two, and now that it's built, I'm just settling in (and making a lot of roasts) to test out how well the system handles future problems.

I am still in my embark on savage savana/desert. We started with the lack of water which wasn't much of a deal at a time but recently somehow one of my dwarves got injured and we have a big problem now. My embark is 10 strong now I wasn't planing to breach coverns for at least another half a year or so but it seems that in order to save this isiot we need to risk lives of everyone in search for water. I built some bridges to be able to cut off the coverns if it comes to worst. Also first dwarven caravan is due to arive anytime now so we are building quickly a trade depo. It was busy period building outer fence and hiding inside from giant monitor lizard that cam to visit which resulted in me not building enough. We will have to sell some alcohol and make some small deal maybe more seeds or  some weapons.

Apart of that my time in the fortress was rather univenfull so far.
