4 times now.

4 bloody times.

4 times one of my hammerdwarfs has disappeared with no given reason. They can't be being slain by the fleshballs and cave blobs.... they must be dodging into lava or some dumb shit like that. That's it, I am never sending my military to the 3rd cavern floor again. This is too many losses.

See if you can find their corpses on your stock screen - even if they are "missing" you can still see them. Then, if you have DFHack, you can use the "deathcause" script while you have their corpse highlighted on the stock screen. It will spit out a little blurb (Urist McHammerdwarf was killed by X, or something along those lines). You could also check through the reports - you won't have the "Urist has been found dead" message at the end, but if the combat log ends with something obvious (The X strikes the Hammerdwarf in the head and the injured part explodes into gore!) then that's all the information you need.

There's nothing in the combat logs; at least, if there ever was, it was too long ago for me to read now. I guess I'll just have to start engraving memorial slabs.....

I recently reclaimed the only fortress of a dead civilization that fell to goblins (after taking the king on a brief adventure).

So far so good, have only lost one dwarf to a forgotten beast so far. Population of 22, also saw some candy in the third cavern.

Finally, some good news: one of my giant bats have given birth. I've also finally gotten around to setting up a dining room and the dwarfs of Crowgravel have thrown a party to celebrate. It seems that the party has generated several new couples.....then again, I almost never check my dwarfs' relationships, so those relationships might've been there already. In any case, hopefully I'll have seen at least one marriage before this party is over.

I do believe the correct answer, as it always should be, is magma. Either that or liberal amounts of atom smashers.

My current fort is flowing nicely. I just need to remember to lock up my mayor when the dwarven caravan comes so I can hopefully be promoted to a barony! It'd be nice to actually progress to something higher than just an outpost-y thing.

Protip: statues cannot be made out of wood unless they're artifacts. If you see what appears to be a wooden statue outside your fort and it's not an artifact, destroy it immediately.

I've decided to do a crazy thing: I ordered that all my crundles be trained and slaughtered. This will improve the skills of my less-favorite trainers, free up a large number of cages and make several menus quicker to navigate.
