Use the iron. Swords give >100% return when melted.
Sword gives only 90% return, according to the wiki.

No, I like her. Apart from the swords, she is useful and by replacing her I will risk a riot as she is at her.... fifth term, IIRC. The fort is 5yo and she has been the first and only mayor.
Not to discourage someone from senseless murder but you can also replace a mayor by selecting a new one.

I do know, I used that function myself a few times. But still, murdering or replacing this specific mayor is out of question.
After all, she is one of my veterans, and I want her to live as long as possible.

Alright, these prissy elves are starting to piss me off. I haven't touched a single tree this year to avoid their criticism, and the damn elf diplomat comes and tells me that I've disrespected trees (LIES! Everybody knows that trees are merely the adolescent form of charcoal and bins) and disrespected my dwarves by telling them that they are stunted. I'm seriously tempted to lock the accompanying merchants in and slaughter them all. Opinions?

Sworddwarves are intercepting them now.

Edit: Results! The entire caravan was slaughtered without even a bruise to any of my dwarves, who did an absolutely magnificent job. They even bisected an elf or two. Can't hump trees anymore! Showed them what happens when you insult a dwarf.

:) All is sunshine and light - goblins are invading yearly (so far 24 or so max) the massive elven empire has finally started sending war-parties annually with their offerings of corpse-parts and useless wooden weaponry, and our only casualty was a Macelord I squashed with a drawbridge (sorry, Urist McSlow) Nothing has penetrated the defenses far enough to set off the doberman-bomb, even. The archers have crippled any werebeast attempting to get to the gate, then pot-shot at them until they reverted to human and promptly finished them off.

There's a flaming FB in the upper caverns we'll eventually have to deal with, but for now he can potter around burning mushrooms. We left him there and tunneled down to harvest candy.

Now if only the neighborhood necromancer will visit before FPS death sets in, life is complete.

Umm...wow, a diplomat from the humans just arrived. Not only is it an Amphibian Woman lawgiver, it is also a vampire. It's not going to bite my dwarves is it?

I've had it happen before, and if you keep it waiting too long, it absolutely will get hungry and nom someone. And you can't use the justice system on it, either.

Ghosts of people we once knew have been appearing everywhere and have cut off a hand of at least two dwarves. We now work single handedly towards burying every dead rotting corpse. The gorillas are making a lot of children recently. There are now more gorillas than there are dwarves.

Wait, you trade with them before hand?

... so basically you passed up a chance to insult them, and labelled your own fortress-produced goods as stolen so yo9u can't trade them to someone you actually need to trade with?

I didn't trade with them myself, I offered a Bloodthorn bin full of our finest wooden goods while I sealed the bridge. Then I sicced my swordsdwarves on them.

Also! The meeting with the amphibian woman vampire law-giver (so many adjectives!) went perfectly, and she is now...exiting through the caverns. Oh well, I guess it's the fastest way back home???  :-\
