Alllright, i just went to my local Jeweler workshop and turned a ordinary piece of chert stone into a cut stone. And i noticed that i could even cut ores and coal if i wanted....

...Since when is That an option to cut more than just jewels? O.o

I know it seems logical to be able to do that, and logically that stuff is less worth than a cut jewel.
But still, that option must be new...

Nope, I've been able to cut regular stones and ore since I started playing DF (0.34.xx)

Same, I remember getting really confused that cut gypsum wasn't selling as well as the other jewelry even though it didn't seem to have any other use at the time.

Usually cutting cheap stones is used to train your jewelers.

Also you can improve finished goods and furnitures with them, increasing their overall quality.

Especially with a good gem setter.

The king (who was randomly appointed from the local 83-year-old badass maceman one day) has an absolute fetish of shields and constantly demands we make more, then tells us we can't sell them off.

This guy has some problems.

At least he isn't prohibiting the export of bins.

I actually haven't been using bins.

Should probably make some.

I don't export bins, I just use them to carry all those finished goods.

Shields are not bad, because you get 1.2 bars when you melt a shield.

So, just embarked in a brand new world, and I'm greeted by an announcement:

You have located Runanithpa, "The Old Zephyr", a lair.

A quick peek at the units screen confirms that my starting seven are in for some early !!FUN!!:

Oxasp Ongetsu Lungo Tod, Cyclops (current resident)

Two of my dorfs have combat skills, but no shields, weapons or armor. The w-smith and a-smith both insisted that they could make some really nice bronze kit from scratch, but time is suddenly of the essence. At least the melee fighter is a proficient miner wielding a copper pick?

If I build a workshop near Mr. Tod's lair, will he prefer to attack it instead of my dorfs? Or is it better to hope the miner can dig everyone a hole to hide in before he notices he has company?

On a completely random side note, I happened to visit an aviary yesterday and got to see two actual live keas. They're really big. One of them was doing some amazing stretches and contortions in its attempts to pull a watering can out of a little pond without getting wet. Very entertaining to watch.

Edit: I chickened out and sent my carpenter to build a wooden floor over the lair's entrance. Problem contained.

The FB is still killing. Death count has reached 387.
The Forgotten Beast scratches The Manera in the head, tearing the muscle, shattering the skull and tearing apart the brain!
A tendon in the skull has been torn!

New dwarven baby machines.
The Brewer Ustuth Alatharros and the Herbalist Zuglar Konoscubor have married.  Congratulations!
They have decided to forego any formal celebrations.

Two goblin sieges (waited them out mostly) and a killed ettin. It's been quiet since. If it stays like this I'll be forced to dig deeper. Even deeper as that. They say there would be a molten core of the motherlode somewhere down. We'll seal the entrance and have it for ourselves! And once we've mastered it, we'll sally out and amaze the world!
